Ian Schrager’s latest hotel brand leaves behind the velvet rope but still offers plenty of high design touches.
When PUBLIC Chicago opened last October in the legendary Ambassador East, it marked a new era in the boutique hotel design world.
Although PUBLIC Chicago features a grand lobby where guests and visitors congregate, the guest room furnishings focus on comfort as much as style, like the line-covered armchairs that are replicas of one Schrager found in a Parisian flea market.
The Pump Room was ground zero for celebrities like Marilyn Monroe, Frank Sinatra, and Paul Newman. What really separates the new PUBLIC brand is the “cheap chic” concept of cutting out all the extras; Wi-Fi is free and there is an “Express” room-service menu of Vongerichten’s gourmet meals at non-luxury prices and with no room service charges.
Fed up with the overpriced minibars and underacheiving service standards that plague the American hotel industry, Studio 54 co-founder Ian Schrager recently unrolled Public, an affordable luxury hotel in downtown Chicago. I was a guest of the Public on a recent trip to Chicago and was immediately impressed by the hotel's pared-down look and flawless service. The Public's 285 rooms are individually furnished with an uber-clean, but still slightly eclectic aesthetic to appeal to people of varying tastes. In addition to great suites and common spaces, the hotel also has a few more add-on amenities to boast about. In 2001, Thomas O’Brien laid the design foundation of what was then 60 Thompson Hotel—a stunning boutique destination that managed to be tucked quietly into the heart of NYC's SoHo neighborhood. When Jeff Leung graduated college, he began the arduous odyssey of job searching and, even though smartphones display the time, Leung felt wearing a watch was a necessary part of appearing professional. When citizenM announced they were opening their first American outpost in Times Square, we were a bit skeptical.

Lifelong philanthropist and billionaire entrepreneur Sir Richard Branson has shaken up traditional industries with his adventurous spirit and design sensibility.
A serene retreat in the heart of Stockholm with modern Scandinavian style, the recently-opened Hotel Skeppsholmen makes a welcome addition to the more glitzy and bustling options in the area. Designed by the Boston firm of Shepley, Rutan & Coolidge, the library is in the beaux-arts style. The latest brand from Ian Schrager focuses more on timeless style rather than trendy design and ultra exclusive velvet ropes.
An oversize clock and a 42-inch flatscreen TVs adorn the walls, along with a series of Jean-Baptiste Mondino photos of cows, a nod to Chicago’s famous meat market. Schrager plans to bring the Public brand to several more cities, including New York and London. Schrager reclaimed the walls of the Ambassador East Hotel and its classic restaurant Pump Room, imbuing a shock of new life into the historic structure.
With austere lighting and dark interiors, the new appearance is a departure from the glitz and glam of the Pump Room of bygone days, which hosted celebrities of all walks from the Queen of England to Richard Pryor. The new direction for Schrager signals a change in demand from travelers, who are willing to trade terry-cloth complimentary robes for a more economical experience.
The meeting spaces are ideal for creative workshops, a real boon considering Chicago's centralized location that makes it a perfect meeting point for businesses.
The laid-back boutique hostel stuck out in the South Beach hotel scene, saturated with extravagant but oftentimes uniform options.

Regis Bal Habour Resort brings the supremely luxurious service and accommodations the brand is known for to the worldwide destination of South Florida. The architectural history of the Ambassador East offers the perfect backdrop for the new classic and modern hotel brand.
The rooms don’t skimp on luxuries like snow-white Mongolian lambswool throws, John Pawson beds, and 300 thread-count Frette linens.
With value and simplicity as the stated ethos, Public marries upscale luxury travel with almost unbelievably affordable prices.
For the restaurant, Schrager kept the name, ditched the dress code and over-priced entrees, and brought in chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten to head up the kitchen. The Public defines its own brand of luxury in the simplicity, efficiency and convenience that the hotel offers. Jean-Georges Vongerichten’s recreation of the hotel’s legendary 1926 restaurant now offers simple, delicious fare like roasted beets with house-made yogurt, and crab toast with lemon aioli. The fitness room is located on the upper floors and features an amazing view of the Chicago skyline, something greatly appreciated by health-conscious frequent flyers tired of exercising in dismal hotel basements. Entrances, however, are on the short ends, rather than monumentally placed in the center of a long front.
