Surrealist Japanese author Kobo Abe’s 1973 novel The Box Man purports to be nothing more and nothing less than the diary of a box man. The first hint that all is not what it seems can be seen on the page opposite these remarks: there is a negative from a piece of 35mm film, reproduced at the actual size. For a box man the slit int he vinyl is comparable, as it were, to the expression of the eyes.
Abe covers all this in the space of scarcely ten smoothly flowing pages, but what happens next is jarring. The Box Man is a hugely unstable text, a book that regularly forces the reader to question a) whose point of view the narrator is claiming to write from; and b) whether the narrator is to be believed. In this way, The Box Man book opens itself to numerous interpretations as to the provenance of the document we are reading and the true history and identity of is creator(s).
The format of the book, which is already a hugely interesting experiment in narrative technique, further lends itself to the questions of identity, point of view, voyeurism, and sexuality that it explores throughout. The Box Man is somewhat reminiscent of Kazuo Ishiguro, in that with Ishiguro you are continually forced to re-establish your coordinates with each revelation made (knowingly or not) by the first-person narrator. That Abe is able to make this text so fragile in its instability yet keep it from flying apart is an achievement. The first essay dives in to Nicholson Baker’s “sex trilogy,” explaining just what Baker is up to here and why these books ultimately fail to be as sexy as Baker might wish. From there the book moves on to the second essay, which explains just why Spaniard Javier Marias does right what Baker does wrong . 3 never-before-published essays, including “The Digression”—a 4,000-word piece on the most important digression in Cesar Aira’s career. This EFL lesson plan is designed a short film called The Adventures of a Cardboard Box in which a small boy finds myriad of uses for a cardboard box and the theme of critical thinking (reasonable reflective thinking focused on deciding what to believe or do) and divergent thinking (thinking to generate many different ideas about a topic in a short period of time).
I would ask all teachers who use Film English to consider buying my book Film in Action as the royalties which I receive from sales help to keep the website completely free.
Film English remains ad-free and takes many hours a month to research and write, and hundreds of dollars to sustain. As a warmer show the photo of a paper clip below and ask your students to come up with as many uses of a paper clip as they can in 3 minutes.
Let them work individually and then after 3 minutes they should pair up and compare their answers. Ask them to work in pairs and to come up with as many uses of a cardboard box that a child might think of as they can in 3 minutes. Tell your students they are going to watch a short film called The Adventures of a Cardboard Box. Pair the students so that they can speculate about what they are going to see in the film.
Show the film and ask the students to compare their narratives with the story shown in the film. Students should watch the film again, note down the different uses of the cardboard box and compare them with their own answers. Your students will probably realise that he wants a brother or sister to play football with.

This is a brilliant idea and the material used might elicit lots of speaking from all kinds of students. I actually used the lesson with 18-year-old kindergartenteacher trainees and they loved it. I’ve read about the situation with education and it sounds pretty bad, but hopefully the situation can be resolved peacefully.

Please consider buying my methodology book Film In Action to help keep Film English a non-paying site. After a quick look around your home it doesn’t take a genius to realise that cardboard is one of the main items used in packaging. Now that waste has being mentioned, it also seems important to mention the fact that the UK produces over 8 million tons of cardboard for packaging every year; and as a consequence often sums up as the largest solid waste around the world. The reason I am writing like this is because after reading my other blogs you will often find that I am writing about how you and your local council can do this or that in terms of recycling, along with some personal feelings on the issue. Lyan Packaging are able to offer a wide array of cardboard boxes of different sizes, quantities and styles.
The company hopes this automated product inventory API, out today, can help make links to out-of-stock products a thing of the past.
Roman said the new Product Availability API does not require any technical integration by retailers, because it uses page-scraping technology to grab and sort the text on a retailer’s page in real-time. Two Tap’s previous Checkout API, which allows products to be ordered from multiple retailers via one shopping cart, is currently used for about 450 retailers through affiliate manager CJ Affiliate by Conversant (formerly Commission Junction). When someone actually buys the product, the app developer makes a commission through affiliate relationships with certain retailers, which is why Two Tap is working through CJ Affiliate. Those 450 retailers will also now get access to this API — thus giving the company several hundred retailers as a starting base.
While developers will pay Two Tap for each product query through the Product Availability API, the company is today making its universal shopping cart available for free in the hopes of creating a larger ecosystem. Some large retailers already create their own product availablility API, but Roman told us that Two Tap’s is the first generally available one that already has hundreds of participating retailers. All that can be seen is a curving expanse of white that takes up approximately the bottom third of the frame, a background of pure black, and something triangular on the curve of white, possibly a rock with something long and thin jutting out of it toward the ground. At night, or when the box man wishes to rest, all he need do is to simply sit down and the box becomes his home and, perhaps, his camouflage. We first learn that the box man writing down these notes is in fact waiting for a woman who says she will deliver to him 50,000 yen in exchange for his box. The story is told in numerous sections with subheadings, and each time we move to a new subheading the reader must doing some work of situating it within the context of the overall narrative.
The identity of the first-person narrator continually grows less and less stable, until the last section, a wonderfully minimalist, imaginative piece that stands somewhere between a prose poem and a lucid dream. The book, upon a second and third examination, is found to be quite carefully conceived in that it avoids pointless paradoxes or irrationalities yet does not easily reduce to a single solution. If you find any joy or value in it, please consider supporting Film English with a monthly subscription, or by contributing a one-off payment. Tell your students they are going to see an example of critical thinking involving another young boy. They really went along well and we finished by adding a writing assignment: I had them pretend to be journalist and write newspaper report on what they had seen and experienced.
I have actually been using the cardboard box idea for a while to discuss the way that children and adults think differently but my lesson was never as exciting as this!! Education is a highly vocal subject at the moment here in Chile (strikes and protests for the last 6 months) so I shouldn’t have any trouble stimulating discussion. They weren’t too creative with the paperclip, but the box brought up all sorts of ideas.

You must be standing in disbelief, wondering how a material which is largely known as recyclable, is land filled time and time again. He writes blogs and articles on many subjects including industry news, recycling and printer cartridges. We can offer a range of standard cardboard boxes from stock, but can also supply boxes of a bespoke size with or without a printed design. Of course, this is only useful if the page accurately lists product availability, sizes, and similar specifics. Retailers with affiliate relationships are already set up so that developers can make their money. Even more fantastically, we learn that the woman is connected to a man who shot the box man the day before with an air rifle, and who, so claims the narrator, is in fact depicted in the negative we saw before the first page of text of The Box Man. There are also images with captions interspersed at regular intervals, seeming to not correspond in any obvious way to the surrounding text into which they are placed.
Although there is much uncertainty inherent to the narrative, it isn’t difficult to imagine potential ways in which each set piece follows the one before it, and if you so choose, you can give the book a fairly mundane, completely workable interpretation. Please help make this sort of writing sustainable, either with a subscription or a one-time donation. Get feedback from the whole class and ask students which are the most creative and inventive uses. Tell them to work in pairs and to come up with ways he can persuade his parents to have another child. I’ve used the lesson with students and it works really well, they come up with loads of uses for a cardboard box and are really creative, they love the film as well.
It was especially entertaining as the class was for a father and daughter so the uses were completely different. But just throwing it away after you are done with it is a waste as cardboard can be recycled up to five times before the fibres become too weak. Aside from its professional uses for the production of business cards, playing cards, binder’s boards and the like. I mean, yeah, sure you can take it down to your recycling centre or throw it in the green bin, but what is the point of doing that when you can keep it for when you need it? We are able to source boxes from quantities as low as fifty, ranging up to tens of thousands. Indeed, as The Box Man progresses the identity slippage steadily grows more and more radical. We then went on to actually write a script (in the form of a commercial for TV) about all the possible uses of the cardboard box. It is often kept around the house for whenever you think you may need it, ironically the reason is usually for packaging things back up!
Obviously I don’t expect people to have a mountain of cardboard in their own homes but just a decent amount stashed away somewhere for whatever you need it for or whenever you need it would be enough to suffice.
In large quantities we can provide a stock holding service, with stock ready to call off by the customer.
The segment is called The Pitch and you can find lots of the videos on YouTube if you are interested.
As we have done this exercise in past classes they adapted it well to go with the cardboard box video. As sad as it may sound I truly believe you can never have enough cardboard, there is always one use for it no matter what, whether you are using it to package your precious family heirlooms or your three year old child is pretending a cardboard box is a car; you will often realise that this material can be recycled within your home itself, in contrast to lets say, used paper or drained batteries.
