Hello all, I am currently planning a n gauge shelf layout after a few years of modeling in larger g gauge scales. This layout is a rather special N gauge layout owned by Kevin Player and is a fictional layout depicting a typical DB Museum but what makes this layout rather special is that its all built and run in a suitcase. Over the years I have seen several suitcase layouts but this is by the far the best in terms of detail and running ability but what pushes it to the top of the pile is it’s all DCC Sound.
I saw several N Gauge layouts at the show which this and Broadwater Junction being a cut above the rest.
The thing which I loved about this layout is its the complete opposite to Furth DB Museum with its openness and the way its able to run long trains but still look small. Its a brilliant idea, I was amazed by the layout and the fact that the tender locomotives were all DCC sound. On the top loop we run prototypically accurate freight and passenger trains from all over Australia – both past and present.
On the bottom loop (closest to the viewing public) we run trains designed to appeal to our youngest visitors. All of the infrastructure of the G scale layout has been scratch built using many recycled materials. A hand operated rolling rail bender was designed and built within the club to allow the brass rail to be bent (or straightened) to any desired radius.
One end of the railway consists of a large loop running over a pond and through a small tunnel under a waterfall. Could I, as a newcomer, lay Atlas Code 55 track well enough to run smoothly; is there a lot of soldering involved?
As Lee pointed out, smooth-running layouts can be built with Atlas Code 55, PECO C55, or KATO Unitrack. I was working on a track plan using the kato unitrack just to see if i could do it (i liked the challenge) and they provide very good geometry for everything they offer. I wasted nearly a thousand dollars on Kato Unitrack only to pull it all up and literally throw lots of it away in the trash.
If you try to take a turnout apart to fix it, you'll see how very poorly designed they are. Of course track like Kato, Bachmann, etc that all have integrated roadbed are going to be literally plug and play. The show uns every year over the first weekend in October and is a very popular and well run event. The lower level comprises of the Museum, with the Fleischmann turntable and Round house, together with all the features of this subject.

Owned by the Warley MRC N Gauge Group, they used a range of sources for its gestation: coastal and estuary lines like the Cambrian, others in the West Country as well some Scottish and Southern scenes. Despite the simple track plan and lack of operational work this for me was the most fun layout at the exhibition as I could spend hours just watching the trains go past and with the ability to change eras and location in a flash the sky is the limit with what you could run on it.
I did some research into the layout and it has won loads of awards from places like the N Gauge society. It uses a simple automated system made from old telecommunications relays and track mounted reed switches operated by magnets glued under the last car of each train, to control operation and sequence an endless parade of constantly different trains into view of the public.
Some of the classic trains you can see are “The Overlander” (Adelaide – Melbourne), “The Ghan” (Adelaide – Alice Springs our model is of the old Ghan – before the extension to Darwin was built!), “The Indian-Pacific” (Perth – Sydney), and a variety of freight trains. The biggest problem we have is that the young-un’s know far more about these trains than we do!
It consists of a single main line about 70m in length – at scale speeds it takes around 20 minutes to drive once around the layout! This system is fantastic for a layout of this size as it allows the driver to walk around with their train and maintain control over it at all times. A train has to go up and back each finger twice in order to complete a full circuit of the layout. Some tracks interconnect them allowing continuous running around and around if you are feeling lazy. At the other extreme, a much larger permanent layout (17m x 2m) is currently under construction. Although we didn’t win any prizes, we had a lot of fun and received a lot of positive feedback – especially about the quality of the scenery. It is completely level and elevated to about three feet to permit easy eye-level viewing when seated. The most significant purchase was the brass rail and the thousands of screws used to hold it down to the sleepers – each of which was cut from recycled timber. All of the points (and even one cross-over) have been scratch built by hand and customised to the intended installation location.
This area is part of the public area of the club and permits Mum and Dad to enjoy a cuppa while the kids watch the trains.
With a family history ( males ) of railway workers my leaning is towards model railways so my question is this.
Ed,The twigs were just a suggestion, as I know some people(like Paul Dolkos) use them for armatures.
I first thought Kato Unitrack would be great for me because it seems to reduce the complexity of assembly and wiring and so on. I dont know how to glue this track down either, but it seems like it might not be too time consuming in comparison to how great it looks.  These are my two current options because I think code 55 looks so great but kato seems to be much easier, but is it that much easier? The Code 55 sectional track will not maintain reliable electrical contact over months and years without some soldering.
The good news is that soldering is not a hard skill to learn, but it does require some practice.
I wish they were available in HO as well, it would be handy for my HO clients who choose KATO.
Now that I would like to see how my track plan works with atlas code 55 turnouts I cannot find any geometry on them. I had horrible issues with their #4 turnouts and half of them required me to do some work to fix them. That's fine for the beginner who just wants to watch trains run around or to have something set up for kids. That was also a very successful and enjoyable exhibition – until nearly the whole crew came down with a gastro bug after it was over! Naturally the idea would have to be sold and have something in it for the shopping centres. We have the JTT tree display in our shop and they have some very nice trees, and some not so nice. I spent too many hours hand painting each tie one by one and then sprinkling ballast between each tie one by one after running a little but of white glue between each tie one by one. He has had to modify lots of rolling stock to get the proper wheel flange height though so it took a bit of effort.

I have used them on an HO layout with good success.The tree in the center of the picture is one of the 433-1986 armatures with some simple woodland clumps on it. Wiring is kept above baseboard level on the fiddle yard side of the back scene for ease of maintance. He does have a variety of turnouts complete with groundthrows and tortoise machines too though but it shows what potential code 80 has. The whole point of that article though is probably to show what is possible with that style of track so at least from an education standpoint it was quite useful. Ease of carrying was also designed into the layout whose 4 sections will each fit between the wheel arches of most cars. These trees averaged around $1-2 each.The one tree that is a bear to make right is a Birch. Sadly this happens long after you've spend hours detailing all of the track up to it after it is glued down. Only Atlas Code 55 gets tie spacing correct but with track detailing the rest don't stand out. Type of baseboard structure is reasonably light with the legs also designed for lightness too. Using Peco or Atlas track will require a bit more effort up front to initially get it running but ballasting and detailing more than make up for it in both overall looks and time to detail.
If I were doing another N scale I would consider Atlas Code 55 but would have no issues with again using the Peco Code 55.
