Atlas model trains parts, electric train set scales,n gauge model railway exhibition, train memorabilia gifts - PDF Review

Following the success of its National Railway Equipment (NRE) GenSet I, Atlas has added the NRE GenSet II to its HO scale Trainman Plus line.
At first glance, the Atlas Trainman Plus GenSet II may look a lot like the firm’s GenSet I we reviewed in the March 2011 Model Railroader, but there are substantial differences. The Atlas GP40-2 is an excellent model of this locomotive, offering smooth operation, fine details, and detail options to match different prototypes. The GP40-2 was introduced by the General Motors Electro-Motive Division in April 1972 and production of a total of 861 units continued through December 1986. Fewer GP40-2s were sold than either the earlier GP-40 or its dash-2 siblings, the GP38-2 and SD40-2.

Our sample model came decorated as Atlanta and West Point number 733, a GP40-2 built in November 1974 as construction number 73681-1 with Phase 1 details including an 81” short hood and wire mesh radiator grilles.
Atlas makes several alternate sets of detail parts for this model, and includes those appropriate for each decorated prototype offered. The paint on our sample was smooth and evenly applied, and the white lettering was crisp and opaque. The Atlas GP40-2 is available in both the Master Series Silver decoder ready version with an NMRA 8-pin plug, or in the Master Series Gold version equipped with a dual-mode decoder and a QSI Quantum sound system.
The ready-to-run locomotive features a newly tooled shell, thinner-profile handrails, and cab roof details.
The locomotive, like the 3GS21B from 2006, was designed with the environment and fuel savings in mind. National Railway Equipment’s website notes the GenSet design has reduced emissions, noise, fuel consumption, and maintenance costs compared to traditional locomotives.

The chassis, trucks, fuel tank, and battery boxes appear to be the same as those used on the GenSet I. 1293 features a vertical nose-mounted headlight (the area on the cab where the headlight could go is plated over), ditch lights on top of the anticlimber on both ends, and blanked out horizontal windows on the back of the cab. In addition, the battery boxes (between the front truck and fuel tank on the model) are recessed too far.
