Built by the American Locomotive Company (Alco) the low-hood S-2 was introduced in 1940 to replace Alco's earlier high-hood switchers. Between 1931 and 1940 ALCO built 177 high hood (HH) switching locomotives of various horsepower ratings and body styles.
Of the 177 high hood switchers built, 104 were HH600s, 18 were HH660s, 21 were HH900s and 34 were HH1000s.


In 1938 ALCO introduced a line of high hood switchers powered by the new model 538 diesel engine which featured a cast iron engine block. First built for Union Pacific in the late 1980's by General Electric, the DASH 8-40C diesel locomotives were identified by an enlarged exhaust stack and the mounting of the dynamic brake grids in a square-like unit behind the cab, which housed an enlarged equipment blower fan. The 4,000hp Dash 8-40CW was produced by General Electric between 1989 and 1993 as a follow-up to the successful Dash 8-40C locomotive.
Note: Due to the higher starting voltage required to operate the sound system, it is not possible to MU a non-sound-equipped loco in DC (analog) mode.
It can be considered one of the most successful four-axle diesel road-switchers ever produced by the builder. Some of the largest users of these models included New Haven, Lackawanna and New York Central.
This engine was offered in both a 660-hp (non-turbocharged 538) and 1000-hp (turbocharged 538-T) switcher, each weighing approximately 196,000 pounds.

This model represents the more common "Phase III" carbody style, which applies to most locomotives produced after 1970. These 1,600hp locomotives were powered by an ALCO 244 V-12 engine which was complimented by rugged GE electrical components. They produced the same 1,600hp as an RS-3, but offered increased tractive effort due to the use of a larger generator. The horsepower rating could be adjusted downward slightly per customer specification by lowering the RPM of the diesel engine.


Four major railroads purchased the Dash 8-40CW in fairly large quantities, including Conrail, CSX, Santa Fe and Union Pacific. The versatility of the S-2s was evidenced by their service on class 1 shortline and industrial railroads. The biggest change occurred in 1934 when ALCO hired industrial designer Otto Kuhler to improve the appearance of their very boxy, utilitarian switchers. It could be found in virtually every type of service from passenger and commuter runs to heavy-haul and local freight assignments. Atlas' version is back in service, with new tooling, as well as a sound-equipped version for modeler enjoyment. The post-1937 production units we are now offering featured many of his suggested improvements.
The HH600 and HH660 locomotive models we are offering were produced from 1938 to 1940 and were externally identical.
