The nose of the Acela Express locomotive is painted fiber glass and the rest of the body is stainless steel. For months, travel message boards have been abuzz with rumors of Amtrak’s very quiet trial rollout of free WiFi on select Acela Express trains. In conference calls and a five year financial plan (PDF), the government-owned corporation said that after a review of the early trials, WiFi will be fully launched on Acela Express high speed trains by March. In addition to free wireless internet, Amtrak CEO Joseph Boardman has said the company plans to upgrade cars and locomotives. The upgrades can’t come any sooner, as Amtrak faces fierce competition from low cost bus services who increasingly offer free WiFi. Amtrak estimates that internet access will drive ridership and increase revenue by $4.3 million over the next five years.
Dates for fleet upgrades haven’t been planned yet but, as you can imagine, depend on financing.
Speaking of seats, the "business class" section of the Acela has two by two seating, similar to pretty much every Amtrak train. First class (which is usually an additional ~$110 or more each way) provides free food and one by two seating. Acela now provides a number of healthy options including salads, however my old Amtrak standby (on any east coast train) are the hot dogs.
I would tend to agree that business class on the Acela is not much nicer than the regional, though it does tend to be more on time than the regional. But earlier in the year, during the off peak season, there were lots of dates that were in the sub $80 range. Interestingly I was considering writing a post on a what a breeze it was at JFK yesterday to fly to D.C.

Ita€™s very noticeable in certain light, such as in this digital image, where the body looks far shinier than the nose.
Now, Amtrak has officially announced that they will finally begin to provide wireless internet access on trains and that fleet upgrades are planned for the future. The company plans to spend an additional $26.2 million to add WiFi to other markets, most likely starting with the popular Northeast Regional service. When cancelling there's two options: lose 10% of your fare or receive an evoucher for the full amount. The waiting area is divided into two, one area used to be for Acela customers only, but it doens't seem to be that way anymore.
Even if you are able to roll your bag behind you easily, a quick monetary tip to a red cap will allow you board before the masses.
Due to track speed limitations throughout the northeast we mostly plodded along at 50 or 60 miles per hour. But the real advantage to regular Acela travel is that you can get five first class upgrades for 10K points (which at 1500 points for a rount trip, is almost one upgrade per trip - and they have lots of extra point deals, such as double points at the moment). The Acela Express train sets were designed and manufactured by a consortium of Bombardier and Alstom. So, add us to your ad blocker’s whitelist or pay $1 per week for an ad-free version of WIRED. I tend to fly this route, as often American Eagle has ~$80 one way fares that are cheaper and faster than Amtrak.
Boarding early theoretically gains you access to one of the coveted single seats at the end of each business class car on the Acela. I can only assume the acela designers tried to eliminate this by not providing seats, only a small counter.

But since I had never taken Acela before, and had an expiring $100 credit on Amtrak I decided to "splurge" a little. Little did I know at the time that you can only redeem "e" vouchers at non electronic human ticketing counters.
The first class lounge is only for first class Acela passengers and those traveling in sleeper accommodation on the long distance trains. Of course, as the person on my train learned, those seats are reserved as accessible seats for passengers in wheelchairs or with other mobility issues. Still, there were "cafe lice" even on this trip, chatting away on the phone taking up the little bit of available eating area but not eating or drinking anything themselves.
Measuring almost 70 feet long, 10.5 feet wide and 14 feet, eight inches high, the power car has 6169 horsepower and is capable of reaching speeds of 150 mph over current Northeast Corridor infrastructure. Remember, "business class" on Acela is two by two leather seats which would normally be called Coach on other Amtrak trainsets. Making you go to a ticketing station certainly makes it somewhat unlikely that all the "e" vouchers will be redeemed within their 12 month time frame. I can only assume these are the same "gate lice" that we see crowding airline gates before boarding time. But in the Acela world, it's renamed "business class", while the one by two upgraded seating on Acela is labeled "First Class". A week before this trip I went to Penn Station and waited to redeem my "electronic" ticket that I had printed out. Luckily the line at Penn Station moved somewhat quickly and I was out of there in 20 minutes.
