The new A4 is larger than the outgoing model, but has shed as much as 120 kg due to utilisations of new materials.
The aerodynamics have been improved and it now boasts the best drag coefficient in its class at 0.23 cd. Two turbopetrol engines are available, while a turbodiesel model and a quattro version will arrive soon.
The systems available in South Africa include Audi active lane assist, Audi pre-sense, Audi side assist, the City Assistance package and the parking assistance package.
We'll be driving the new Audi A4 on the 25th and 26th of February - look out for the first drive report soon.
The next-generation Toyota Fortuner has just broken cover online after a few teaser images hit the Web recently.
For the Australian market, the 2016 Toyota Fortuner will be offered in three spec options - GX, GXL and Crusade. The suspension has been tweaked by Australian engineers for their specific harsh conditions and it comprises of double wishbones at the front and a five-link, coil-spring configuration at the rear, which gives it impressive handling stability and ride comfort on all surfaces. In terms of specification, a reversing camera is standard across the range, as are seven airbags, hill-start assist control and an emergency stop signal. The two top-spec models are fitted with roof rails, fog lamps, reverse parking sensors, keyless smart entry and start, and downhill assist control, with the flagship featuring bi-LED headlamps and LED daytime running lamps, a power back door and 18-inch alloys with highway tyres. The 2016 Toyota Fortuner will be powered by a new 2.8-litre direct-injection turbodiesel engine. Inside, you are met with a spacious, modern-looking cabin that’s well kitted out with features.
Powering the Steed 6 is a four cylinder 2.0-litre diesel engine that generates 105 kW and 305 Nm of torque through a 6-speed manual transmission. As you would expect from a bakkie, the engine roars to life in an agricultural fashion but once on the move, the Steed 6 comes alive and has sufficient grunt to execute overtaking manoeuvres with relative ease. Having that sixth gear makes highway cruising pleasant as the engine never feels excessively laboured. The Steed 6 has a payload rating of 625 kg but without a heavy load in the back, the suspension can feel quite bouncy, but even so, the ride quality is acceptable.
Buyers with a family in mind will be happy to know that the Steed 6 2.0 SX doesn’t skimp on safety and comes fitted with dual front airbags, ABS with EBD and ISOfix seat mounts in the back, too.
The GWM Steed 6 SX is an offering that simply can’t be ignored when shopping for a 4x2 Double Cab bakkie.

The 2015 Opel Mokka arrives in South Africa this week and we have the specifications and pricing for you. Opel is really making waves, both locally and internationally with a flurry of new products. Despite its compact size, the spacious interior offers extremely high levels of standard specification, meaning it should prove quite popular with the gadget fanatic generation.
That's all standard for the Enjoy models, while the Cosmo gains rain-sensing wipers, an auto-dimming rear-view mirror, automatic headlights with Active High Beam Assist, front and rear parking sensors, electric folding mirrors, a sunglasses holder, IntelliLink, the reversing camera, heated front seats, interior ambient lighting, rear privacy glass, 18-inch alloys, JASMIN leather upholstery, a heated, leather-bound steering wheel, specialised ergonomic front seats, a rear arm rest and a 230V power socket.
We headed to Turin, Italy to get a taste for the brand's entry into the double-cab market.
The Fullback is the result of cooperation between Fiat and Mitsubishi, which has offered its Triton double cab model in South Africa since 2007.
The Fullback line-up will comprise single- and double cab derivatives, powered by petrol and turbodiesel engines mated with a 5-speed manual or 5-speed automatic transmission. Our test route took us out of the confines of Turin and out onto the Autostrada (highway) first. The notoriously narrow Italian side streets can be a nightmare for a double cab, but we were pleasantly surprised by how nimble and agile the Fiat felt in urban confines. Despite the fact that the engine worked hard, we were impressed by the levels of quietness in the cabin.
The automatic-equipped Fullbacks make use of an electronic selector and this allows drivetrain mode shifts at speeds of up to 100 kph.
2016 is major year for the South African double-cab market thanks to the arrival of the new Hilux. The changes to the updated Isuzu will be largely cosmetic and include specifications upgrades. The exterior has not changed dramatically, but the addition of a more distinctive grille treatment and redesigned headlights (with integrated LED elements) will make the KB stand out a bit more. The Isuzu KB update is scheduled for the end of the third quarter or beginning of the fourth quarter of 2016. The Captur, an exciting-looking B-segment crossover from Renault, was launched this week and I was in Johannesburg to drive it.
The Renault Captur is the French brand's compact crossover and on the back of massive sales in Europe, much is expected of this vehicle in South Africa. The Captur is no different and is a serious head turner, especially in its bold Bi-Tone colour scheme. There are two derivatives to choose from: Dynamique and Expression, but interestingly there's not much to separate them.
The other engine is a turbo'd 1.2-litre four-cylinder motor and this is coupled to a six-speed twin-clutch gearbox. The twin-clutch gearbox had me instinctively feeling around the steering wheel for shift paddles, and there were none to be found. The engine may feel a little underpowered, but this is essentially the only mark against an otherwise good car, and even then it will only be a problem for some customers. Another Renault party trick is offering an amazing amount of specification fitted as standard. On the practicality side of things, the Renault Captur is a lot more versatile than the Clio which it is based upon. Aside from a slightly underpowered engine, the Renault Captur is a promising product and takes the fight to the Ford EcoSport and Nissan Juke, both of which have been a success in our market. Toyota has revealed details regarding the facelifted Toyota Land Cruiser which can be expected in South Africa by the end of 2015.

For starters, the exterior design has changed somewhat and up front you will notice a redesigned grille with a three-bar design that extends into the LED projector-style headlights. At the rear, the Land Cruiser features a new upper tailgate panel, combination taillights, reflectors and mudguards. On the inside, the interior benefits from added soft padding with particualar attention paid to material thickness and finish. The Toyota Land Cruiser also benefits from a new Optitron intrument cluster with a 4.2-inch multi-information display.
New driver assistance systems in the facelifted Land Cruiser include a Pre-Collision Safety System, Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, Lane Departure Alert and automatic high beam. A blind spot monitoring system with rear cross traffic alert and panoramic multi-terrain monitor is also available. Toyota South Africa are keeping engine details for the facelifted Land Cruiser close to their chest for now, but you can expect details to surface closer to the vehicle's launch in South Africa towards the end of the year. Suzuki has a reputation for producing reliable, no-fuss cars that offer great value for money.
We travelled to Belfast, Northern Ireland to drive the new Suzuki Baleno in order to get a feel for the newcomer, which is set to be launched in South Africa during the fourth quarter of 2016.
Suzuki interiors are incredibly well-made, but tend to lack a few interesting or appealing design cues.
We also got to see some of the technologies that Suzuki makes available in its overseas models. Initially, the Suzuki Baleno will come to South Africa with the 1.4-litre naturally aspirated motor.
Ashley has been riding or driving some sort of motorised vehicle since his 4th birthday when he got a Yamaha PW50. The upgrades to the engines have focused on increasing power (up by 21%) and reducing fuel economy (by up to 25%).
The system will integrate your smartphone with the car via a Wi-Fi hotspot and result in internet access and functions such as Google navigation and internet search capability. Standard assistance systems include Audi pre-sense city, secondary collision brake assist and the adjustable restraint system. Being an Audi, the list of options that you can specify for your car is rather extensive too. Australia will be one of the first countries to receive the Fortuner and South Africa is expected to receive its stock towards the end of the year. All models are powered by the new 2.8-litre direct-injection four-cylinder turbodiesel engine that has 450Nm of torque.
At this stage, we're likely to see the South African Toyota Fortuners arrive two months after the Toyota Hilux, which is around February 2016.
For relatively new manufacturers competing in this segment, business is tough, something GWM knows all too well.
Its presence is felt with its large louvered chrome grille, LED driving lamps, flared wheel arches filled with 16-inch alloy wheels and an overall length of 5,345 metres. Comfy cloth seats welcome you in and the interior layout is rather smart and doesn’t feel tacky. Although slightly under-powered when compared to its competitors, these figures still do a good job of lugging all 1 816 kg of metal about town.
Initially the gear shift felt annoyingly stubborn in selecting the correct gear, but once I got used to the ruggedness of it all, driving the Steed 6 became somewhat easier and I started enjoying the feel. I did notice a fair amount of wind and road noise entering the cabin at higher speeds, which was mildly disappointing. For your money, you are getting a capable and modern bakkie that comes packed to the hilt with features.
Gero has worked in the motoring space for the last four years and enjoys driving and photographing the latest cars. Late last year we saw the Opel Adam land on our shores and not so long ago, the all-new Opel Corsa was launched. However, the newcomer has an Italian-styled exterior and a functional, modern cabin, but shares its underpinnings and mechanical parts with the new Triton, which is still to be launched in South Africa.
The current market leaders (Hilux and Ranger) have both grown in size considerably and, as a result, can be quite unwieldy.
We had the opportunity to put the vehicle through its paces in a forest, however the aftermarket satnav did a fine job of getting us lost, so we were restricted to an on-tar evaluation only. With a ground clearance of 205 mm, and the aforementioned drive options, the Fiat Fullback looks like it has the basics covered in terms of off-road operation. The big news late last year was the announcement of an all-new 1.9 turbodiesel engine, but a source at General Motors South Africa said this is not destined for our market. The Captur, like the Renault Clio upon which it is based, was designed by Dutch-born Laurens van den Acker. Sunset Orange is the official launch colour and can be ordered with either a black or white roof. This is a similar unit to the one found in the Renault Clio RenaultSport, but not identical. There's a slight hesitation upon take off, but once you're moving the engine pulls reasonably well. The Captur offers the drive of a normal hatchback, boasts MPV-like practicality and space, while even throwing in good ground clearance of 170mm like an SUV.
There's a decent amount of legroom for the rear passengers, and the rear bench can slide forwards and backwards.
With Renault reporting European sales of around 161 000 units sold in 2014 alone, the Renault Captur should do well here. The bumpers, bonnet, fenders, side protection mouldings and door handles have been reworked too. Switches, buttons and dials have been restyled and regrouped to improve usability while a storage area with a 12V outlet has also been added. Top-spec models also feature a larger 9-inch display screen compared to the previous 8-inch system. Ford, Opel and Renault have already adopted 3-cylinder motors at the entry-level ends of their Fiesta, Corsa and Clio line-ups and Suzuki has followed suit with a 1.0-litre turbocharged unit of its own. Their cabins also tend to eschew the plushest soft-touch materials in order to maintain a very keen price.

The cabin definitely feels Golf-sized and the levels of leg- and headroom afforded to rear occupants are excellent.
The British-spec Baleno comes with high-end safety technology such as radar braking, which will warn the driver if a collision is imminent and then automatically brake if it determines a collision is unavoidable. It will also not have the touchscreen infotainment setup, but a simpler audio system comparable to that in the Ciaz. Crushed by the expense of motor racing, Ashley took up journalism and became a writer for some of South Africa’s best motoring magazines and online publications. The range will only feature sedans, with no plan to bring in the Avant station wagon to the South African market.
While this article is primarily about the Australian-spec 2016 Toyota Fortuner, our market is not too dissimilar and we would be very surprised if the South African-spec Toyota Fortuners are radically different. There's also a six-speed manual gearbox which cleverly matches engine speed to gearbox speed, resulting in smoother shifts. Torque will be available from as little as 1600rpm in the automatic gearbox and has an output of 450Nm. Bakkie buyers are generally hell-bent on acquiring popular models such as the Ford Ranger, Toyota Hilux and to a lesser degree, the Isuzu KB, making it exceedingly difficult for alternative brands to get that foot-in.
A nice touch is the leather covered instrument binnacle and a leather wrapped steering wheel with mounted controls. This is a 4x2 model so hardcore off-road enthusiasts will have to look elsewhere, but there is a standard Eaton rear diff-lock that kicks in automatically when needed. The Steed 6 is by no means perfect but it’s better than you think and does a good job of undercutting its competitors by a significant margin and represents excellent value for money. The six-speed manual and six-speed automatic transmission are both powered by the tried-and-tested 1.4-litre turbocharged petrol engine with 103kW and 200Nm. The Fullback, on the other hand, effortlessly completed three-point turns as we were sent in completely in the wrong directions by an erratic aftermarket satnav unit mounted on the dashboard. On paper, the manual Fullbacks have a traditional transfer case gear lever that allows the vehicle to shift between two-wheel drive, four-wheel drive high and low-range mode. We'll see a new version of the Isuzu Connect touchscreen infotainment system as well an all-new TFT display located between the speedometer and rev counter on the instrumentation cluster.
This man is responsible for the big bold Renault logo on the nose of the car and even from a non-car enthusiast's point of view, these designs are simply breathtaking. I have a particular lust for a Pacific Blue with a Diamond Black roof which looks sensational. Firstly, there's the familiar 0.9-litre three-cylinder turbo which does duty in the Renault Sandero and Renault Clio. Our launch route took us from the Cradle of Humankind to Sun City, via Hartebeespoort Dam and it was on these roads that I got to sample the Captur's abilities. Renault was keen to show off its offroad credentials to us and the launch route included numerous dirt roads of varying qualities. Satellite navigation, Bluetooth, cruise control, USB port, touchscreen infotainment, auto headlights, rain-sensing wipers as well as the usual safety acronyms of ABS, EBD and airbags have been thrown in. When these seats are folded flat and the bottom of the boot has been dropped, you're looking at 1 235 litres of space to play with.
The motor delivers peak outputs of 82 kW and 170 Nm of torque, which compares very favourably with those of its rivals. The Baleno is much the same in this regard, the door inserts and transmission tunnel are finished in relatively unyielding plastics.
It will be just as spacious, drive well and the 1.4-litre has proved itself to be quite fuel efficient (if a little sluggish) at altitude.
The third row seats are fitted with a fixed hook attachment for simple and convenient stowage. Best news is that the 2016 Toyota Fortuner will be built in South Africa at Toyota's plant in Durban.
With the introduction of the new Steed 6 Double Cab, GWM aims to turn the tide on its competitors, but is it good enough to succeed? Its Opel's first ever sub-compact SUV and it has already achieved mega sales in Europe with over 240 000 units finding homes.
It has 66kW, and based on that spec item alone (I did not drive it), I'd be a little apprehensive of the performance. Thanks to Renault's great safety and stability features, I felt confident when driving through gravel and sand. On the safety side of things, the Renault Captur scored a five-star rating at the 2013 round of evaluations. The Baleno, then, sits somewhere between the Swift and Volkswagen Golf in terms of size but will be priced in line with the small hatchbacks such as the Ford Fiesta, Volkswagen Polo and Hyundai i20, to name a few examples.
In terms of refinement, it’s particularly good and offers a smooth delivery of torque through the rev range.
There’s even adaptive cruise control on the top-spec model, which is unusual for this segment, too. Trailer sway control, which is designed to assist if a towed vehicle is affected by crosswinds, bumpy roads or sharp turns of the steering wheel, will be fitted. I spent a week behind the wheel of the Steed 6 2.0VGT SX in bright Fashionable Orange to see if has the guts to take on the heavyweights. Drive the Captur in a gentle manner and let the gearbox shift on its own accord, and things are adequate. The maximum towing capacity is rated at three tons for the manual and 2.8 tons for the automatic. That compares impressively with smaller rivals, such as the Hyundai i20, Kia Rio and is on par with the Mazda2.
Suzuki SA did say it plans to bring the 1.0-litre turbo to SA some time after initial introduction. Suzuki SA does intend bringing this infotainment system to South Africa but, again, not with the initial launch.
