Suzuki has a reputation for producing reliable, no-fuss cars that offer great value for money. We travelled to Belfast, Northern Ireland to drive the new Suzuki Baleno in order to get a feel for the newcomer, which is set to be launched in South Africa during the fourth quarter of 2016. Suzuki interiors are incredibly well-made, but tend to lack a few interesting or appealing design cues. We also got to see some of the technologies that Suzuki makes available in its overseas models. Honda has its sights firmly set on claiming hot hatch supremacy with the introduction of the new Civic Type-R. Thankfully, those days are gone and Honda has developed a new, more powerful turbocharged weapon that picks a fight with almost every hot hatch on the road, including the insanely capable (but-soon-to-be-discontinued) Renault Megane RS 275 Trophy. The exterior appearance of the Civic Type-R leaves nothing to the imagination: it is built for speed.
Using a mono-scroll turbocharger in conjunction with VTEC technology, the Civic Type-R is capable of achieving 100 kph from standstill in 5.7 seconds with a significant top speed of 270 kph. On start-up, the Civic Type-R delivers a distinct thrum from its four-pipe exhaust system, reminding you of the power that lurks beneath the bonnet.
The Civic Type-R offers more than enough power for the average motorist driving in the city. With much of the emphasis placed on performance, we expected the Civic Type-R be heavily compromised in terms ride comfort. Although a degree of torque steer is evident during hard driving, the Type-R is fitted with dual-axis strut front suspension that reduces torque steer significantly and helps the vehicle to dive into corners at speed, while inspiring utter confidence in its driver. The downside to all of this magic is that in +R mode, the Civic Type-R becomes considerably less comfortable to drive as the suspension is simply too stiff and driving becomes more physical and tiring. Thankfully, the Type-R balances its performance characteristics by offering a solid dose of practicality.
In terms of safety, the Civic Type-R comes well equipped with ABS with EBD, traction control, stability control and a total of six airbags fitted as standard. The Honda Civic Type-R is a phenomenal piece of machinery and hardcore enthusiasts will appreciate what Honda has created here. Volkswagen has picked two turbo petrol engines and a turbodiesel to begin the range of SVs hitting SA. We had the 1.4-Litre TSI available to drive at launch and it coped well around the route from PE through to Knysna. It may be called a Sportvan in Europe but it rides very comfortably and is extremely smooth on the road.
The entry model 1.2-Litre TSI model starts at R292 500, which offers a good entry point into the MPV segment. The overall length of the new Corsa is identical to the outgoing model as Opel believes owners were most pleased with the model’s compact exterior but generously spaced interior.

It seems the new Opel Corsa is finally getting the attention it needed to bring it up to date with some of its competitors, we hope that the long list of features makes it to our shores after the car is launched towards the end of 2014.


It may not look radically different, but the all-new Audi A4 is a huge improvement over its predecessor in every key area. There is plenty of technology to make journeys easier, including active cruise control that will match the speed of the car in front, help maintain lane position and will even drive automatically in traffic jams at low speeds. Ford, Opel and Renault have already adopted 3-cylinder motors at the entry-level ends of their Fiesta, Corsa and Clio line-ups and Suzuki has followed suit with a 1.0-litre turbocharged unit of its own. Their cabins also tend to eschew the plushest soft-touch materials in order to maintain a very keen price. The cabin definitely feels Golf-sized and the levels of leg- and headroom afforded to rear occupants are excellent.
The British-spec Baleno comes with high-end safety technology such as radar braking, which will warn the driver if a collision is imminent and then automatically brake if it determines a collision is unavoidable. It will also not have the touchscreen infotainment setup, but a simpler audio system comparable to that in the Ciaz. The tables have certainly turned, but does the new Civic Type-R offer enough clout without demanding too many compromises from its owner?
The large rear spoiler and diffuser provide extra downforce while at the front, the sculpted grille and bumper enhance aerodynamic performance. Enthusiasts are in for a treat with 228 kW and 400 Nm powering the front wheels through a short-throw 6-speed manual transmission. The Civic Type-R can be driven sedately with effort, but it soon becomes evident that the car is wired for spirited driving.
Overtaking and nipping through traffic is easily achieved and sufficient power is always available to the driver, regardless of what gear you find yourself in.
We were surprised, however, to find that the car offered reasonable levels of comfort and the suspension wasn’t as stiff as we initially thought. With the +R mode activated, the illumination of the instrument dials changes from white to glowing red and the Type-R perks up for maximum performance. For the average daily commute, +R mode makes no sense at all but for track sessions, it’s right on point. The high-backed bucket seats are more comfortable than one might expect and the generous side bolstering ensures optimum comfort when the Honda's pushing on through the bends.
Most performance cars don’t cater well for rear seat passengers, but the Type-R is different. It’s a thrilling and involving car to drive and although it offers decent levels of practicality and space, the Type-R is just too specialised for the average daily commute.

Think of it as a slightly bloated Golf, not a fat Golf, just one that can carry more and is a bit roomier on the inside. VW has then thrown the practicality stick at the inside meaning that the rear seats slide forwards and backwards, the boot can hold between 500 and 590-Litres depending on where the seats are and the rear seats will fold down just about flat. Some might want a bit more shove in the overtaking department but it does the job pretty well for an MPV. Strangely VW has opted not to bring in the 110 kW turbodiesel that would offer more oomph in the range but it did say that if the SV does prove to be a hit, it could bring in more variants. Like most VWs it feels solid and very easy to control and provides you with good confidence of the cars capabilities. The new Opel Corsa has been redesigned from the ground up, featuring a new chassis, body panels, interior and a new lineup of fuel efficient engines. This is said to aid stability and roll characteristics whilst lowering the centre of gravity.
The diesel entry is a 1.3-turbodiesel that has been improved to meet Euro 6 emission standards. Opel say that the VW Polo competitor will feature Hill Start Assist, Automatic Park Assist (the car will self-steer into a parking place), and a Tyre Pressure Monitoring System. Engine noise is near non-existent and even at motorway speeds there is barely any wind noise. There’s also a range of safety technologies, such as automatic emergency braking, plus convenience tech like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto to make in-car smartphone use safer. It might not be quite as sharp to drive as the BMW 3 Series on a country road, but on motorways it’s quieter and more relaxed, plus it is available with a huge range of technology. The motor delivers peak outputs of 82 kW and 170 Nm of torque, which compares very favourably with those of its rivals. The Baleno is much the same in this regard, the door inserts and transmission tunnel are finished in relatively unyielding plastics.


It will be just as spacious, drive well and the 1.4-litre has proved itself to be quite fuel efficient (if a little sluggish) at altitude. That’s not to say that the Type-R was a disappointment, quite the opposite actually, but it did lack that edge and as a result, it found itself eating rubber on the periphery of the hot hatch circle.
A by-product of all this aerodynamic paraphernalia is a vehicle that looks decisively hardcore and, as a consequence, its styling may polarise opinion.
The line between a leisurely drive and face-melting drive is a fine one and even moderate inputs from the driver results in rapid acceleration. Stopping power is initiated with large 350 mm high-performance Brembo brakes and the Civic Type-R rides on 19-inch alloy wheels shod with Type-R-specific Continental SportContact 6 tyres for maximum grip. This development can be attributed to the new Adaptive Damper System fitted to the Type-R that enhances stability and suppleness of the ride.
High speed cornering is something the Type-R does brilliantly and not only is the steering direct and precise, but the hot hatchbank grips the road so prodigiously that drivers will be inspired to push the their limits further with each turn behind the wheel. The engine becomes noticeably more responsive and the torque-mapping is altered to allow for more grunt at lower engine speeds. It’s far better suited for days on the track, where it will provide endless hours of thrills. VW has played with the spec of the cars, so be aware what you’re in for before heading to a dealer. Next in line is a 1.4-Litre turbo petrol with 92 kW and 200 Nm that can be manual or DSG with the seven-speed DSG being the chosen ‘box. It doesn’t try too hard to be sporty and leans more towards the comfortable ride end of the spectrum – what you expect from an MPV.
The pricing keeps it below premium competitors like the BMW Active Tourer and Merc B-Class and just about in line with the Citroen C4 Picasso. Opel wanted to provide greater definition between the ‘sporty’ look of the three-door and the ‘premium’ look of five-door models. The front end has been stiffened and new suspension geometry makes for more precise handling whilst not hampering ride comfort. Fuel economy tests have not been done yet, but will be available once the car completes the Euro emissions tests. Gearboxes include a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic, no word on a dual clutch setup though.
The only sound that is really noticeable on the road is from the tyres, though this is still well-suppressed and is only an issue if larger wheel sizes are specified. The efficient engines and low company car tax rates are the icing on the cake, making the A4 arguably the best small executive car on sale.
The Baleno, then, sits somewhere between the Swift and Volkswagen Golf in terms of size but will be priced in line with the small hatchbacks such as the Ford Fiesta, Volkswagen Polo and Hyundai i20, to name a few examples. In terms of refinement, it’s particularly good and offers a smooth delivery of torque through the rev range. There’s even adaptive cruise control on the top-spec model, which is unusual for this segment, too. The downfall of this setup is that the turning circle is significantly widened making manoeuvring in narrow spaces more difficult. The Type-R handles beautifully and only the very best drivers will be able to unlock and exploit its true capability. The reality is that, for the price, the Type-R doesn’t make much sense and buyers can get there performance kicks from more balanced products such as the Volkswagen Golf R, BMW M135i and Renault Megane RS Trophy 275. Standard specification on the entry level model is relatively good though as you get the 5-inch touchscreen, seven airbags, a full size spare wheel and air-conditioning.
The Type-R is therefore less of a city slicker and more of a high-performance track weapon.
A host of track tools such a G-force meter and lap and sprint timers are available to the driver as well. That compares impressively with smaller rivals, such as the Hyundai i20, Kia Rio and is on par with the Mazda2. With its short shift action, the driver can initiate quick gear changes under hard acceleration and the transmission is suitably matched to extract maximum performance from the engine. Suzuki SA did say it plans to bring the 1.0-litre turbo to SA some time after initial introduction. Suzuki SA does intend bringing this infotainment system to South Africa but, again, not with the initial launch.
