Everyone is familiar with how loyalty card programs work — in exchange for using a company-branded debit, credit, or point-based card, you agree to surrender some basic personal information and your purchasing habits for benefits such as points, cash rewards, special offers, and free merchandise and services. Most individuals are comfortable with the privacy trade-off, and it is becoming increasingly difficult to avoid getting a new debit or credit card without having it bundled with alluring offers for free or discounted gas, food, merchandise, air miles, or other promotional offers. TJX Canada (better known in Canada through their retail chains Winners, HomeSense, and Marshalls) recently released their own loyalty program with the TJX Canada Style+ card. While store loyalty cards are nothing new and TJX Canada is somewhat late to the game, it is worthwhile to examine the privacy implications of using this card and decide whether the privacy trade-off is right for you.
The TJX Canada Style+ loyalty card program seems to be severely tilted in TJX’s favour, offering very little benefit for you as a consumer while providing TJX and their third party service providers with a host of quality information about you, your demographics, and your shopping habits.
Compared to most loyalty card programs that offer substantial discounts on merchandise or a 1-2% reimbursement in points or cash, the TJX Canada Style+ loyalty card is severely lacking. The only concrete benefit extended to you as a consumer is the ability to extend your return period from 10 to 30 days, which is already still quite low compared to most other retailers in Canada. In order to qualify for a benefit period, you must make three (3) purchases at eligible stores within the previous benefit period. Failure to make three distinct purchases in a period will disqualify you from receiving benefits in the next benefit period.
In exchange for a 30 day return period and the ability to receive somewhat vague benefits via email if you stay within strict eligibility requirements, TJX Canada retains the rights to use and share your personal information in a host of ways for itself and its third party service providers. The clauses in the Privacy Notice that you agree to when registering for the card online are nothing new or out of the ordinary for any loyalty card program. As a consumer, it is up to you to decide whether the privacy trade-off is worth the benefits you receive. The TJX Canada Style+ Privacy Notice does a thorough job explaining how your personal information will be used by TJX Canada. The basics include using your information to administer the program, communicate with you regarding the benefits of using the program, and tracking your preferences and qualifying purchases. The last point likely enables TJX Canada to prevent the occurrence of return and purchase fraud under the banner of loss prevention. A few years ago retailer giant Home Depot came under fire by the Privacy Commissioner of Canada for requiring a driver’s licence whenever a return was made. These exceptions include transferring your personal information to any third party service provider that TJX Canada is affiliated with or whom it uses in conjunction with providing services. Your personal information may be maintained and processed by any of those affiliates or third party service providers, including those based in the US or other jurisdictions.

Natalie2 years agoI agree that this loyalty program is the lowest on the benefit vs privacy trade off, except … you can use this card without registering anything online. In September of 2012 I wrote about Japan Airlines’ new first and business class product, which looked quite nice.
Anyway, as I wrote about several weeks ago, Japan Airlines finally finished reconfiguring all their longhaul 777-300ER aircraft with the new first and business class product. This route is awesome for that, since it means you can get all the way to Southeast Asia in longhaul first class.
I had read about a direct turn you did on the Singapore-Colombo-Singapore sector in CX where you traveled to Colombo without a visa.
Just wanted to have your thoughts on this whether the airline is right or I missed some point there. Another great option to get to SE Asia rather than depending on the devalued MileagePlus awards. You are assuming US will be using their present award chart and you can find an agent that will book that intra south pacific routing. Someone on FT mentioned they got a similar routing from a US DM agent with the NRT-BKK-SYD (and reverse) segments on TG F, so it is possible. FWIW, I ended up routing ORD-NRT-PEK-HKG with NRT-PEK on the JL 787 in J and PEK-HKG-SIN in CX F. Since you’re transiting Asia Zone 1 to get to Asia Zone 2, wouldn’t this take two awards? You should do the JL flight to CGK but I would suggest trying the all new First Class product on a GA 777 on the same trip!
I did 726 (CGK-NRT) connecting to the JFK flight last month and it was indeed a great use of AA miles.
As is often the norm when airlines take delivery of an aircraft with a new type of “product,” Etihad has up until now heavily restricted premium cabin award space on the plane. Anyway, Running with Miles has pointed out that Etihad A380 First Apartment award availability between Abu Dhabi and London is fairly readily available through the end of the schedule. Best of all, redeeming American AAdvantage miles for travel on Etihad between Europe and the Middle East is a heck of a deal, at just 40,000 AAdvantage miles one-way in first class.
If you’d like to redeem American miles for travel between the US and Middle East in first class (which allows you to route via Europe), that will run you 90,000 miles one-way. On the plus side, this means there are now two airlines on which you can easily redeem miles for showers (Emirates being the other airline)! So would you say this is more of a keep in mind for booking or OMG BOOK NOW IT WILL BE GONE? What would you recommend flying from the West Coast (LAX) in first to get to LHR or close to it? Ben- am I correct in assuming this could be had for as little as 36k miles if you have an AA credit card due to the 10% redemption rebate? He travels about 400,000 miles a year, primarily using miles and points to fund his first class experiences. Outside of banner ads published through the Boarding Area network, this compensation does not impact how and where products appear on this site. The military base, also known as Joint Base Andrews, is the home of the 79th Medical Wing, 89 Airlift Wing, 316th Wing and Air Force One.

Due to security concerns taxis, buses, airport shuttle buses, and limousines are NOT allowed on base.
Expect to make at least twelve (12) qualifying purchases throughout a calendar year in order to qualify for these extended benefits. Every loyalty card program will use your personal information and purchasing habits to better improve their services, merchandise offerings, and to share with third party service providers. It is how an organization uses and shares your personal information that you need to be aware of. Most consumers don’t know that by signing up for these programs they also consent to being solicited for yet more information and more offers that most consumers would ordinarily consider a nuisance. These third parties may include, for example, those used to host their website, serve their advertisements, send email, SMS text messages or other communications, and conduct customer research.
I suspected that this would be exactly the case of a program with low return and decided to try using it without registration. The registration website does not give any information on what benefits you receive – which probably means there are few that are valuable, or that are worth spending the time to redeem. Japan Airlines’ only destination within Asia to which they offer first class is Jakarta, and they fly a 777-300ER there.
However, from there it would be roughly 10 hours of flying in regional business class products to get to Colombo. Last week I wanted to do a direct turn on EK Dubai -Karachi – Dubai for a personal reason but the airline refused it issue a ticket stating a visa is required though I catogarically mentioned I won’t be attempting to clear immigration in Karachi! Booked on the 787 from NRT-JFK because the timing works better for me (connecting from KIX), but I could try to get on the morning flight on the 777-300ER in business. The inaugural flight will be from Abu Dhabi to London on December 27, and I can’t wait to be on it in the First Class Apartment. Reason why I ask is because, if I’m flying first class (aa award) LON-AUH-DOH-MLE, would I be able to use the new first class lounge?
The owner of this site is not an investment advisor, financial planner, nor legal or tax professional and articles here are of an opinion and general nature and should not be relied upon for individual circumstances. While I do try to list all the best miles and points deals, the site does not include all card companies or credit card offers available in the marketplace. Are you willing to sell some of your purchasing habits and have your personal information transferred to a plethora of third party service providers for marketing purposes simply so you can have an extra 20 days to return your purchase?
I agree with Amanda about employees and managers not believing in the program – they rarely mention it, they never try to promote it, and when asked about it they quickly change the subject. Oh one more thing, prepare yourself for the massive traffic jam in Jakarta as it will start even before you leave the airport.
Since I’ll be in Dubai in March I could make my way to Abu Dhabi & fly it to London! Please view my advertising policy page for additional details about my partners, including American Express.
