The idea that you make a lot of careful calculations but always leave room for error in woodworking is starting to seep in for me.
When getting started with traditional woodworking, the first thing you need do is get your planes squared away. Even with a simple looking item like this koguchidai there are so many areas in which you always leave room for error.

Deepening the grooves gives you a better idea of where the lines are for the next step when you need to make cuts with the saw. But you wouldn’t want anything that would cut deep when trying to touch up the surface of your planes. The straightedge is made out of hinoki (Japanese cypress), so it definitely smells great when you get to planing that wood for the first time.

Another great example of letting the tools do the work for you and leaving margin for error.
