Bellflowers are a common form of inlay decoration often seen in Hepplewhite and Seymour styles of furniture.
The most typical method for making bellflower inlays is to saw out the flower as a single piece and then incise the outline with a knife to create the pocket for the inlay.
The most difficult part of any inlay is to cut the pocket exactly the right size and shape for the piece that's being let in. You do not want to cut too deep; the ideal depth is the thickness of the veneer being inlaid or just a whisker less. Holly is the traditional choice for inlay because of its light color and fine grain, but any clear-grained contrasting wood veneer will look fine. Once the center leaf's glue is dry, each of the side leaves can be inlaid in the same fashion. The inlays for the side leaves are cut in the same manner using the same gouge you cut the pocket with.
You may have to prepare the veneer about the same time that you’re milling the bricks. In order to cut a sheet of veneer into smaller pieces and fit the pieces into a precise pattern, the veneer has to be rendered flat and pliable. You’ll be using an inlay kit for your router to cut both the recess for the inlay and the inlay itself (see Sources). Whether you are just starting out or an expert woodworker, creating decorative inlays for your wood projects with your laser will enhance the design and profitability of many of your products.

Choosing the Veneer Veneers are very thin sheets of wood and come in many sizes and colors.

This requires patience and skill, but there is an easier method for making very nice bellflower inlays in minutes using just a few tools. Simply use the gouge to cut an arch along the grain of your veneer and then reverse the gouge, aligning the tips to the arc, to cut the leaf out just as when cutting the pocket.
Even though these leaves will be at an angle, you still want to cut the inlay along the grain of the veneer so that it will be less fragile and look better after it has been inlaid.
The inlay pieces will not be level with the surface of the field and there will probably be some glue residue stuck to them. After you practice the technique you will be able to cut and inlay a bellflower in about 30 minutes from start to finish.
You get great results with nothing more than a couple of gouges, a scrap of veneer and a bit of practice.
Traditionally, veneers, inlay and banding would have been directly applied to the curved apron, one piece at a time.
If you’ve ever handled highly figured veneer, you know that it can be stiff , brittle and prone to cracking, much like a potato chip.
Some come with paper backs or adhesive backs (like peel and stick); however, Terry simply used plain wood veneer for this project. This tends to set the inlay flat to the surface of the surrounding wood, even if the pocket bottom is not perfectly flat.

With the leaf cut and dry fit but before placing and gluing, shade one end using the hot-sand technique. When all of the pieces of the center section fit well, bind them together with veneer tape. Most veneer is too thin to survive planing and leveling in the steps ahead—you might cut right through it.

My alternative: Perform all the intricate veneering on a fl at piece of wood first, then resaw the board and glue the new, thicker piece of veneer, pattern and all, directly onto the curved apron. To this day, the region of origin or even the specific maker can be identified by the style of the bellflower inlay used. It can quickly remove the excess while allowing you to see exactly when the inlay is flush.
You can sand it flat in just a few seconds, but use a fine grit and do not over-sand or you risk removing the inlay completely.
