Restor-A-Shine Polishing Compound is specially formulated for restoring the high gloss shine to wood finishes.
Our rubbing and polishing products are designed to optimize finishing results on all film-forming finishes. All products can be applied by hand with a soft cloth or buffer, after the initial flattening and leveling of the finish is done with sandpaper. SURBUF ™ POLISHING PADS – These round pads are designed for use on random orbit sanders with a hook-and-loop style pad.
As featured in Fine Woodworking #159!   Made in England, this is the best steel wool we’ve tested and used.
Adjust your lathe to run at a moderate speed, about 500 to 800 rpm, slower for large-diameter turnings. American Woodworker magazine was acquired by F+W Media (parent company of Popular Woodworking) in 2014. Restor-A-Shine contains extremely fine micro polishing powders, blended together with select waxes and oils, producing a very unique finish polishing compound.
Considered among the finest products available, they are used by Steinway and Baldwin for their impeccable piano finishes as well as demanding guitar companies like Fender, Martin and Taylor. 2L Pre-Polish Compound (#1) is for initial compounding, where you remove the scratches left by wet or dry sandpapers (it will remove 800 grit scratches on up).

Fill any defects, gaps and open-grained woods (ash, oak, mahogany, walnut, etc.), prior to clear-coats and polishing.
Simply place the pad on your sander, apply a small amount of polishing compound or wax to the center of the pad, then work the compound with the sander. This finish is perfect for bowls, vessels, lamps and other turnings that aren’t handled often or are exposed to moisture, alcohol or heat. Make an applicator for applying the French polish from a densely woven, soft, white cotton cloth that has been washed many times to remove all lint.
If you prefer to soften the luster, let it dry several days and rub it out with a finishing compound or fine abrasives (Photo 6).
Rub out the finish with automotive polishing compound or fine abrasives if you want a soft luster instead.
Use with 0000 steel wool to rub-out minor surface imperfections, water rings, and restore damaged finishes. Supplied in paste form, the products can be made to work easier by spritzing with a bit of water during use. These pads are great to use with various polishing compounds and pastes as well as pumice and rottenstone. For shops, we now carry the Brown (antique restorers love the Brown wax) in large 5 liter cans.

High tech manufacturing make this the top choice for cutting back (use 00), or rubbing out the final finish (use 0000). A synthetic sanding pad is all you need to achieve a smooth surface for the final coats (Photo 4). I like to use automotive polishing compound for this process because it costs little, is readily available and does a great job. Shellac is available in dried-flake form in a range of reddish brown, orange, yellow and pale blond colors (see Sources, below). The popular colored waxes are applied directly to wood or used over a very thin shellac sealer to produce a very mellow and natural appearance.
Sold in packs of two pads, it’s recommended that a separate pad be used for each compound.
