I use wooden cutting boards for most of my kitchen prep, which is often very fruit and vegetable-centric. There have been many tests on whether plastic cutting boards are safer from contamination than wood. Wooden cutting boards need to be kept clean and daily maintenance is often a good scrub with hot soapy water after using. Depending on how often you use your boards and wooden spoons, you should also give them an oiling to help maintain their surface and keep them from drying out. The oil you use for your wooden cutting boards and utensils should be food grade and not prone to rancidity.


Buy the best wood cutting board you can afford, take care of it, and it is likely that your grandchildren will be using it. Walnut Oil or Almond Oil These are all-natural oils and are one of the few oils that do not turn rancid as easily as other oils.
You may not think of a wooden cutting board as especially different from any other piece of kitchenware.

If they need it, yes, in fact you can really give them a good soapy scrub first if you want, but then you should let them dry completely before you put the oil on. I have a wonderful collection of round bread boards that just got slathered in mineral oil. Put a little effort into conditioning and maintaining a good board, and it will stay cleaner, work better, and last years longer.
