I looked at several free plans and photographs and decided, design wise, I did not like any of them completely, but they all had one or two things that I liked a lot.

Avoid woods like pine, unless you plan on adding several coats of weatherproof outdoor paint. I simply like carpentry and was willing to try something new that had a chance of coming out well- and it did! Though plywood is obviously more difficult to cut than cardboard, the advantage of using it is that it is easy to make fine adjustments to the shape using sandpaper and a block plane. I have something that may be of interest, these chairs are for those that don't fit the norm.
