"It is an addiction, especially certain composers of operas become addictive, such as Wagner.  I spent three years doing nothing but conducting Wagner and I thought I would lose my mind not because I grew to hate his music, it's just that I couldn't seem to do without it.  It was like a drug and I finally decided I would stop cold.  And I did and I had withdrawal symptoms, it was really bad."
