Very few things could be duller than a discussion about violin bows, unless you're a violinist.  But a good bow does make a difference.  Violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter (ON-Zo-fee MOO-tur) found that using a bow from Bach's day makes a tremendous difference when she plays his music.

"It's like driving a Porsche or driving a Mercedes, you know.  With the Porsche, I mean it's definitively an approach which is faster, it has more nerve in it and it's known to us that he loved very brisk tempis (sic) when he played himself.  So I think we are getting pretty close to what he might have liked, I hope (laughs)."
