"He was so astonishing.  You know he'd come in and the atmosphere in the room would change.  It would become kind of charged.  And he never talked about technique, or being clear, or how you beat this, or show that.  He always talked about music, and what it meant, and the people under the music.  You know, we talked about Carmen, we were studying Carmen with him once, and he would conjure up this image of the bull ring, and the blood, and the sand, and the sun beating down, and the crowd screaming.  And all of a sudden you would feel differently about the music because of how he explained it to you."
