Father's age and pregnancy

Autism risk grows steadily with fathers' increasing age, but accelerates with mothers' age after 30. The risk of having a child with ASD had a more complicated relationship to age in women than in men – whose risk of fathering a child with ASD increased linearly with age across their lifespan. Lee noted that the non-linear maternal age effect that is relatively stronger than the paternal age effect on ASD risk has been observed in previous studies, but has not received much attention. Multiple mechanisms could be in play to account for the different patterns of risk, including environmental risk factors occurring in women after age 30.
In this study, Lee and colleagues analyzed a large population registry sample of 417,303 children born in Sweden between 1984 and 2003, adjusted for numerous possible factors that could vary with parental age and also influence risk, such as family income and each parent’s psychiatric history. A goal was to study these parental age effects in more detail by looking at possible differing risks of ASD with and without intellectual disability – one of the most serious comorbid diagnoses with ASD, with a significant impact on functional status in life.
At the 143rd annual American Public Health Association meeting and expo, faculty from the Dornsife School of Public Health presented research on the health effects of everything from air pollution to your home address.
Drexel University faculty are available to provide expertise, analysis, and commentary on a wide variety of news and research topics. One of the implications that many people take away from these results is that society should aid those who wish to have children at later ages. The General Social Survey has a variable, AGEKDBRN, which asks respondents when their first child was born. All the x-axes on the plots are age of the mother when the first child was born, while the y-axes are proportions across classes. This is very interesting, but it doesn’t seem to control for the age of aspiring fathers. I was always curious about differentials in newborn problems (both developmental and genetic) between mother and father ages. Razib is basically right, the time to pregnancy doesn’t change much for men from age 30 to 40.
Although some studies show contradicting results, we conclude that increasing paternal age is associated with reduced fertility, at least in couples where men are older than 40 years and women are at least 35 years. You know, I wish that someone would write up the first chart with the source of your numbers and upload it to Wikipedia.
I have degrees in biology and biochemistry, a passion for genetics, history, and philosophy, and shrimp is my favorite food. Recent studies have indicated that children who are born to older fathers have a higher risk of schizophrenia. Even exposures that interact with genetic susceptibility may act by changing gene expression, such as traumatic brain injury, cannabis, and stress.

Men wanting to become a father should avoid soaking in hot baths, according to a new study on male fertility. Taking anti-oxidant vitamins, eating healthy (low in saturated animal fat, low in simple carbohydrates) foods, and maintaining moderate weight (appropriate for height), and avoiding cigarette smoke and tobacco products, may help reduce DNA damage in sperm as a man grows older, but quantitative studies have not been done in this area. And - in a rather bizarre news item in 2005, it was reported that men may be capable of subconsciously increasing the quality of their semen when their sperm might have to compete. Straight men produce better sperm when presented with pornography featuring men and women rather than pornography showing women alone. Lyndsey Anderson, Nicola Adams, Rachael Baldock, Julie Bambridge, Kathryn Belfer and Alice Brandolini. The rise in ASD risk with parental age was greater for older mothers as compared to older fathers. Lee, PhD, an assistant professor in the Drexel University School of Public Health and research fellow of the A.J. Among women giving birth before the age of 30, the risk of ASD in the child showed no association with age -- it was simply very low. This was the first population-based study with an ASD sample large enough to study ASD risk in populations of children with and without intellectual disability.
The reason is that there’s so much information, and much of it is skewed toward people who are undergoing treatment for infertility.
Fertility also declines in men, and I would estimate that as women age so do their partners, multiplying the chances of infertility further.
In relation to nationality I'm a American Northwesterner, in politics I'm a reactionary, and as for religion I have none (I'm an atheist). Delores Malaspina noted in a recent Medscape interview that "The finding is that father's age is not connected to the risk of schizophrenia when it runs in families, but only for cases with no family history. If an older man is planning children he should (for several month prior to initiating the pregnancy) avoid hot saunas and whirlpools, bathtubs, etc. Being obese had more of an effect than being overweight but overweight couples struggled to get pregnant too, it found.
Eliahu Levitas of Soroka University Medical Center in Beer-Sheva, Israel, and colleagues report in the journal Fertility and Sterility. But for babies born to mothers aged 30 and older, the chance of developing ASD rose rapidly with the mother's age. Yes, the cost is going to be in the range of tens of thousands, but that’s the magnitude of a car, and far less than a home. The type of people that I know personally are often in this class; they have delayed starting families to finish their extended educations and invest in their own human capital.

The 2nd chart scared me a little, since my girlfriend and I want kids, but not till (an unspecified but faraway time) later. Plus the probability of gestation-related problems probably increases significantly with age. There have also been studies to suggest that 4 grams daily of Acetyl-L-Carnitine helps sperm motility (movement) - and may also be helpful. Zinc, which helps to form sperm, is particularly important for men and is found in meat, shellfish and dairy food.Men with a low sperm count often lack essential fatty acids in their diet, so eat more oily fish, seeds and nuts. The findings are important for men trying to father children through in-vitro fertilization, or even through the natural method. I  found a pregnancy probability calculator online which I cross-validated with some of the literature. Researchers estimate that compared to a male fathering a child in his early 20's - there is double the chance of the child getting schizophrenia when the father is age 40, and triple the risk of schizophrenia when the father is age 50.
Scientists studied sperm quantity and quality after the bathing stopped and found that five of the 11 men experienced a significant increase in fertility. Researchers in Denmark studied 47,835 couples between 1996 and 2002 for the study, published online in the journal Human Reproduction. Sarah Kilgallon and Leigh Simmons of the University of Western Australia, Perth, recruited 52 men. Among the samples classified as being low sperm counts, peak sperm concentration and peak sperm motility occurred after one day of abstinence. The men viewed explicit pictures that featured either two men and a woman or three women and collected a sperm sample.
The dull category encompasses the bottom 35% of the distribution, the not dull encompasses the middle 53% of the distribution, and the smart the top 12% of the distribution. Smoking and chewing tobacco can lower sperm count and increase the number of abnormal sperm a man produces, while heavy drinking can also damage sperm quality.
Samples with normal sperm counts showed a slight decline in sperm concentration during two days of abstinence, followed by a gradual increase to a peak on days six and seven. Malaspina, "our hypothesis and model right now for how paternal age affects the risk for schizophrenia is that it has altered the expression of genes inherited from the father.
This compared with 49% sperm motility in the men who viewed the images of women only – a difference that was statistically significant after taking into account lifestyle factors such as cigarette smoking and alcohol consumption.
