Chances of getting pregnant the day after your period

The Standard Days Method, the family planning method on which the family planning option CycleBeads is based, identifies days 8 - 19 as the potentially fertile days for women with cycles between 26 and 32 days long. In terms of your chances of getting pregnant on day 19 of your cycle, it depends on when you ovulated.
As this information relates to the Standard Days Method, if your cycles are in the 26-32 day range then your changes of getting pregnant from intercourse on day 19 are less than 5%. That said, if you wish to avoid pregnancy, it is encouraged that you avoid unprotected intercourse on days 8 through 19! There are only six days during any cycle when a woman can get pregnant - the five days leading up to ovulation and the 24 hours after ovulation.
CycleBeads lets you know when you can get pregnant by identifying 12 potentially fertile days each cycle – Days 8 through 19, where Day 1 is the first day of your period.
If a woman is not pregnant within 6 cycles of using this method and has been actively trying, she should talk to her doctor to make sure that there are no health problems that are keeping her from achieving pregnancy. While it is possible to estimate ovulation more exactly, it is a challenging process that requires time and training and the tracking of information such as cervical secretions, basal body temperature and charting throughout the cycle. For women with regular cycles between 26-32 days it is much easier to simply know that you can get pregnant as early as day 8 of your cycle and as late as day 19 of your cycle and on all the days in between. Studies have shown that women who use CycleBeads to help them plan a pregnancy are able get pregnant quickly. On a typical cycle that occurs every 24-28 days, the ovulation date is usually between Day 10 and Day 14 of the cycle.

Let’s say your period lasts 6 days, when you finish menstruating, you're 4-8 days away from ovulating, plus the time that a sperm can survive in your body, then there is a narrow window that you could get pregnant.
Be informed that with each day after the last day of your menstrual bleeding, your chances of conception increases. This is usually information given to them by well meaning, but protective adults who may themselves be misinformed. You can see a chart on this page which shows your chances for getting pregnant relative to the day you ovulate. Figuring out the exact timing of ovulation can be tricky, because it does not happen at exactly the same time each cycle.
These 12 days take into account the 6 days when pregnancy is possible as well as the variability in the timing of ovulation from one cycle to the next. If you have a regular cycle, you usually won’t ovulate until about 14 days after the last day of your period.
If you have sex every other day for the next 14 days, you’ll have a greater chance of getting pregnant. Surveys of women using CycleBeads to get pregnant show that they are highly successful, with more than 80% of women getting pregnant within 6 months and the vast majority achieving pregnancy within the first 3 months of trying to conceive.
Meaning that women using an ovulation prediction kit may miss a number of potentially fertile days. However, if your cycle is irregular, or if you ovulate soon after the end of your period, then you can become pregnant because you are starting to move into your fertility window.

There are other fertility awareness methods that can be used by a woman with shorter, longer, or irregular cycles though and which will help you to determine when you are fertile each month.
Both of these methods can be used by women who want to use a natural method, but don't have cycles in the 26-32 day range required to use the Standard Days Method. We would suggest that you talk to your health provider to find out about other family planning options. We can tell you that if you have sex and then ovulate 4 days later, your chances of getting pregnant are about 10-15%. The graph at the top of this page outlines probability of getting pregnant based on when you had intercourse relative to when you ovulated. We are not able to give medical advice and encourage anyone with specific, personal questions about their cycles to talk to their health providers. If your cycles are consistently 29-30 days it is possible that your fertile window could be slightly shorter.
