Cano’s representative at CAA Sports, Brodie Van Wagenen, met with a contingent of Yankees officials that included team president Randy Levine and general manager Brian Cashman before the Thanksgiving holiday.
True to their word, the Yankees have advanced on other business, including signing McCann to a five-year, $85 million deal and reaching an agreement on a seven-year, $153 million pact with outfielder Jacoby Ellsbury. Just got back from the Brian McCann press conference, which was more of a Yankees-in-general media event than a McCann-specific situation.
Walking into today’s press conference, everyone already knew that Brian McCann had signed with the Yankees.
There wasn’t a ton of McCann news today, but it was a pretty well-done event that got the job done. We’ll wrap up the day with a quick look at how the McCann contract came together from three people involved in the process.
Brian McCann: “You just know it’s a winning organization (with) tradition, but when I got to meet the people behind that, it was a big reason why I wanted to be here to be a big part of this process.
In front of team owner Hal Steinbrenner and members of McCann’s family, McCann spoke publicly for the first time about his five-year, $85 million contract with the Yankees that includes a $15 million vesting option and a no-trade clause. As McCann was given his new number, manager Joe Girardi compared him to the best catchers in Yankees history, including Yogi Berra, Jorge Posada and Elston Howard. Soon after the GM meetings in the middle of November, the Yankees invited McCann to New York to meet with Girardi, among others. By that Saturday, the Yankees and McCann had an agreement for five years and $85 million plus an incentive-based option for $15 million that would make the potential outlay $100 million.
McCann toured the opulent clubhouse, then went to a hotel room arranged by the team at the $695-and-up Mandarin Oriental overlooking Central Park.

General manager Brian Cashman met last month with Jay Z, going to the office of the rap mogul who is one of Cano’s agents. Himself a former Yankees catcher, Girardi was excited about upgrading with McCann, a seven-time All-Star who joins a lineage that includes Bill Dickey, Yogi Berra, Elston Howard, Thurman Munson and Jorge Posada. McCann said the Yankees made him feel extremely wanted during his quick tour last month, and the dinner stretched on for three hours. McCann beamed during the news conference as wife Ashley looked on along with their two young children and other relatives. Brian McCann says the tradition of  catchers with the Yankees is something he hopes to continue. Pledging that he wanted to join the lineage of great Yankee catchers, Brian  McCann donned pinstripes for the first time Thursday afternoon in his  introductory press conference at the Stadium. Yankees general manager Brian Cashman  shows off the special Yankees onesies for Brian and Ashley McCann’s children,  which feature Brian’s new No. During the event, several Yankee people referenced big backstop names such  as Bill Dickey, Yogi Berra and Jorge Posada while talking about McCann. Brian McCann is introduced as the  newest Yankee on Thursday and is joined in the Bronx by his wife, Ashley, their  kids and their families. On the dais with McCann and his wife Ashley were Hal Steinbrenner, GM Brian  Cashman, team president Randy Levine, COO Lonn Trost, assistant GM Jean Afterman  and Joe Girardi.
McCann, a seven-time All-Star, is one of only 11 major leaguers to hit at  least 20 homers in each of the last six seasons. McCann was the star of a show — he did a press conference, then a lengthy sit-down session with print media — but Hal Steinbrenner, Brian Cashman and Joe Girardi were asked a lot of questions that had little to do with the Yankees new catcher.

It was his sixth straight 20-home run season, something only McCann, Berra, Johnny Bench and Mike Piazza have done with their primary position being catcher.
McCann merely had to take an elevator downstairs for a dinner with manager Joe Girardi and three other team executives at Porter House New York, a sleek steak restaurant in the Time Warner Center, filled with cherry wood floors and leather seating. McCann and Ellsbury, who hope to benefit from Yankee Stadium’s short porch in right field, appear to be just the start of an upgrade. The Yankees think that streak will be extended in the Bronx, believing McCann’s left-handed swing is suited for the short porch in right field. McCann toured the stadium and said that, besides the financial windfall, the Yankees also provided him an opportunity to be stay in the East; McCann grew up and still lives in Atlanta. McCann said it was important for him to stay on the East Coast, and he was sold on the Yankees commitment to winning and family. Obviously I know McCann would love to have Robbie as a teammate, and we would love to have Robbie as a Yankee.
And to me, what I really fell in love with, I mean you can look at the offensive numbers, you can look at how his pitching staff has been successful, but it’s the way he plays the game, and the intensity he brings.
