Our first sequence, our hitter down the third base line is going to hit to our second baseman, who’s going to throw to first base. One more example of a rotation you can do is our hitter down the first base line is going to hit to the shortstop, who’s throwing to first.

In today’s blog post, we are covering 2 very effective softball indoor defensive drills that work on good communication, as well as making great throws.  Try these defensive drills with your players, and watch them improve in both practice and during game play! Add another infield line and have two infielders and an outfielder going for the ball at the same time. The key is to communicate, to trust each other so the play is made, nobody gets hurt, and everybody knows where everyone else is on the field.
If a ball is thrown poorly or not handled, everybody is going to drop their gloves, run around the square once, pick up their glove and start the whole thing again. This drill works on achieving good throws, handling the ball, and is a great conditioning drill. Many of you are stuck indoors practicing and struggling to find new ways to practice old skills. One of the great benefits I have of speaking at so many different clinics is how many great coaches I get to listen to.
A few weeks ago I heard a good friend of mine Patty Gasso, Head Coach at University of Oklahoma, talk about defensive skills and she mentioned 2 great drills that I loved. The Infield Wall Drill only takes a block wall and a Zip Ball and will really improve your infielder’s ability to defend the short game and throw on the run. The coach starts about 10 feet in front of a block wall, facing the wall with about 6 Zip Balls® in her hand.


The reason your players don’t use their gloves during this drill is to make sure they first work on fielding the ball before worrying about throwing it. For outfielders, this same setup works great to help them work on their drop step and also help them catch the ball over their throwing-side shoulder.
Focus on this drill in two parts; the first part is to simply help your outfielders work on their drop step, not so much on catching the ball. Just make sure that you’re not hitting to both infielders on the same side of the infield at the same time.

Our goal is to avoid collisions, first of all, so we avoid injury; second of all, so that all the plays are made. Also, if an outfielder does catch the ball, she needs to get it to the infielder and not throw it all the way in. You want to designate positions because it’s important on the field communication-wise that if two people call a ball, we know whose ball it is – again, to avoid collision, to avoid injury, and to make sure the play is made.
So player 1 is going to throw the ball to player 2, and then player 1 is going to follow the throw and get in back of that line.
If you know me you know I’m a serial-learner so I am constantly listening to anyone teach almost anything, while taking tons of notes. Both of these drills are simple, take very little equipment and are very effective, so let’s see if you agree.
The drill requires a coach, a wall, about 6 Zip Balls and your infielders without their gloves. Your infielders start by facing the wall and without their gloves, about the same distance from the wall as the coach.
NOTE – be sure to go easy when first doing this drill until your players become confident in fielding a Zip Ball® with their bare hands and trusting how their teammates throw the ball off the wall.


The Outfield Wall Drill setup has the coach facing the wall about 4-5 feet from away, with the outfielder even with the coach.
Once your players master the drop step in both directions as well as directly over their head, they can focus on the second part of the drill which is having your outfielders practice drop-stepping back on the ball and then catching it over their throwing-side shoulder. What the intensity drill works on is fielding, throwing, catching, hitting, concentration, and conditioning. It works on concentration because the fielders have to realize who they’re throwing back to. Our hitter down the first base line hits to the fielder that’s fielding on the left side of the infield.
We set our outfielders up in one corner of the gym, our middle infielders across the gym, and our catchers in a far corner of the gym. That's OK because there are plenty of indoor softball drills that players can practice in order to get ready for the softball season.
Once the role of this drill is explained to the players, they see that it's useful and are more willing do it.

The drill starts with the coach throwing a Zip Ball® near the bottom of the wall (so it comes off the wall as a ground ball) and the first player in line (P1) charges the ball, fields it and throws it back into the wall for the next player – all while on the run.
This provides an opportunity for an awful lot of repetitions, fielding, throwing all bases, really focusing. What we do in the gym is we put our outfielders in infield positions to allow them to get the repetitions as well.
Each fielder is going to field five balls, throw to the designated base, and then we change the sequence. Our pitcher is going to toss the ball to our outfielder as if she’s getting a relay throw and then she, in turn, is going to turn around and throw a good ball to our catcher.
However, if they start practicing bunting indoors then they should be able to do it well enough in the games.
