Chrysler Group used the Texas State Fair to unveil the new 2013 Ram Heavy Duty line with its all-new interior, next-generation Uconnect Access, new frames and new suspension. The Ram Heavy Duty’s frame was built with high-strength 50 KSI steel, including eight separate cross-members, hydroformed main rails and fully boxed rear rails for optimal strength and mass efficiency. Center frame rail sections are roll-formed, an efficient means for maintaining consistent strength in less complex longitudinal sections.
To handle the best-in-class towing and payload capability of the new Ram Heavy Duty, the truck also comes with a new front and rear suspension system with advanced geometry builds upon the chassis improvements and greatly improves overall roll stiffness. In addition, the RAM Heavy Duty comes with new premium reciprocating ball steering gear, redesigned steering knuckles, ball joints and more robust steering linkages to deliver enhanced and precise on-center feel despite the vehicles higher towing and payload capacities. A number of body improvements have been made to enhance overall noise, vibration and harshness and to align with the best-in-class capabilities of the 2013 Ram Heavy Duty.
The new truck also comes equipped with an updated engine, transmission and body mounts, including pioneering hydro-mounts at C-pillar positions for class-leading NVH characteristics despite the truck’s aptitude for higher payloads and towing. Roughly 80 percent of Ram Heavy Duty pickups are sold with diesel engines and a new capless fuel filler on diesel applications is a space-saving initiative that enables side-by-side fuel and diesel exhaust fluid  port configuration.
The Ram 3500 also features a factory-installed trailer tow connector in the truck bed, included with the optional fifth wheel or gooseneck tow prep package.
Bendix Performance brake pads have been developed and comprehensively tested by leading friction engineers to create pads designed to handle a variety of applications – street, road, and race.

Bendix is already a recognised leader in modern friction material technology, and therefore is well placed to draw on knowledge from its global partnerships to bring a new generation of technology to support a new generation of commercial vehicles. Electronic Brake Wear Sensors are an added safety feature on many vehicles used to warn a vehicle’s driver when their brake pads are near the end of their service life. The Chrysler Group has remained surprisingly quiet about what new features are coming to the 2014 Ram Heavy Duty lineup but a bit of prematurely posted information on the Ram Trucks website has revealed that the Ram HD will soon be powered by a similar 6.4L Hemi V8 to that found in the current high performance SRT lineup along with a new air suspension setup. The 2014 Ram HD owner’s manual on the internet and included in the details was a mention of a 6.4L Hemi V8.
The 6.4L Hemi V8 spent some time in the Mopar Performance catalog as a high performance crate engine before becoming a production engine in the Street and Racing Technology (SRT) variants of the Dodge Charger, Dodge Challenger, Chrysler 300C and Jeep Grand Cherokee. We can almost certainly expect to see lower horsepower and torque numbers in the 2014 Ram HD than we do from the SRT vehicles but the tuning process for the Ram lineup will likely present a larger powerband for more consistent pulling and towing attributes. In addition to the new 6.4L Hemi V8, the leaked owner’s manual referenced a rear air suspension that has been rumored to be on the way for some time now. When checked, Shutterstock's safe search screens restricted content and excludes it from your search results. In the rear portion of the new frame, the structure includes fully boxed rear rails and a factory-installed rear axle cross member with provisions for 5th wheel and gooseneck hitches, making it easier to pull large and heavy loads. New structural support is designed into the body to support the payload increase and improve durability performance.

It is unclear whether or not the 5.7L Hemi V8 will continue serving as the base engine for the ? and 1 ton Ram trucks so this new mill could serve as the new base engine for the 2500 and 3500 or it could be a new optional engine for those who want a little more power but who also do not need the massive power of the diesel option – or the huge price increase that comes with the Cummins engine.
It is expected (almost guaranteed) that the 6.4L Hemi destined for the 2014 Ram 2500 and 3500 will be a very different engine from those high performance applications designed by SRT.
I would expect something in the area of 425 horsepower and 450lb-ft of torque with a massive amount of that torque being available just above idle. Additionally, new reinforced tie-down points with enhanced strength are designed for heavier loads.
It is also expected that the new 6.4L Hemi will serve as a “base” engine for the big Ram 4500 Chassis Cab rigs and that should equate to a lower entry price for the Ram 4500 which is currently only available with the expensive Cummins Turbo Diesel. This engine has the very real potential to make the Ram Heavy Duty lineup the most powerful gas powered “big truck” in the US market, becoming a much more viable alternative to someone who needs more power than what is offered by the 5.7L Hemi but who doesn’t need the power of the Cummins – or the massive upcharge that comes with the diesel engine option.
While the power output and the powerband (the RPM range at which the most power is made) are both ideal for high performance applications, tuning the 6.4L Hemi to offer torque at a lower engine RPM will make for a more capable truck while also likely improving fuel economy measures (as heavy duty trucks go, of course).
