I hope you’re inspired to throw your character into a tangle created or magnified by a secret. I tend to read books with strong women characters and it was a refreshing change to delve into the feelings of a man and his role as a father, husband, brother, son, and grandson. The more traumatic the secret (and probably the longer it’s held), the worse the effects.
For example, in one of my stories, a secondary character (very important to the story) has inoperable cancer.

But the big secret--the one that makes her daughter drive off the road, nearly killing herself and her brother when they're all grown up and their mother is dead anyway--is that their mother didn't love their father but actually loved another woman. Elderly characters likely won’t want to give up independence or pride, so they might hide things.
