Resident Evil popularized survival-based gameplay with shuffling zombies, limited ammo, and sparse healing items. My coworkers have shared war stories from State of Decay that remind me of the harrowing tales DayZ players told during the game’s peak popularity. A while back, I wrote an article pointing out some elements I’d love to see in an open-world zombie game.
Techland, the developer of the innovative Dead Island, is focusing on some areas where State of Decay suffered with Dying Light. Both State of Decay and Dying Light feature some exciting refinements and features new to the zombie genre, but neither allow players to build their own defenses from scratch. All the aforementioned titles have varying strengths, but I think the future of open-world zombie games involves a polished blend of all these features.
On the opposite side of the coin, we have narrative-driven experiences like The Last of Us and The Walking Dead. Build, fight, scavenge and survive against infected and humans alike in this action strategy RPG.
That’s a very aggressive feature list for an indie game, but if they can pull it off, this could be an amazing game with exciting gameplay. 7 Days to Die is an open world, voxel-based, sandbox game that is a unique mash up of First Person Shooter, Survival Horror, Tower Defense and Role Playing Games combining combat, crafting, looting, mining, exploration, and character growth. Unturned is a first person survival FPS in which players must scavenge for supplies as they traverse a zombie-filled environment. Players may wield both melee and ranged weapons with melee weapons being ideal for taking out zombies without alerting others while ranged weapons are best suited for taking out enemy players from a more secure location. Make up your mind about the gun (though you may prefer a bow or a knife) and polish your killing skills! Pixel Gun 3D is not only an awesome 3D shooter but also a useful SKINS MAKER for your character in Minecraft!
Zombies, mummies, and skeletons are all made from the same type of boxy body as those in the popular building game Minecraft. In the Skin Maker section, you can create a new Minecraft skin from scratch or start with a preset character and customize it.
Players start on a primer level that looks more like a zombie shooting gallery than an FPS.
Then, you’ll be transported to the graveyard where you must defend yourself against a horde of undead monsters. Thanks for submiting your article, the review process will take approximately 24 hours, it will show up on the site as soon as it is approved.

Brad Pitt is battling waves of them in World War Z, Dead Rising 3 is one of the Xbox One’s main selling points, and The Walking Dead franchise is succeeding in comics, television, and games. Okay, Minecraft features giant spiders and exploding creepers as well as zombies, but the nocturnal enemies remind me of the late Richard Matheson’s enemies in I Am Legend.
Like Minecraft, players are dropped into a dangerous world without guidance, left on their own to find supplies and avoid deadly creatures. The WarZ, recently renamed Infestation: Survivor Stories, is a copycat that has garnered negative reactions from gamers decrying rampant hacking and poor community support. State of Decay hit several of these on the head, such as a tutorial, zombie variety, progression, scavenging, and the elimination of griefers.

Dead Island introduced weighty first-person combat, co-op, and RPG-like progression into an open-world, something the studio is continuing with Dying Light. Rust is the next thing from Garry Newman, creator of Garry’s Mod, which combines the building features of Minecraft with the permadeath and player unpredictability of DayZ. You can still mow down hordes of zombies with a vehicle, but now the undead can cling on to your ride, and plowing into a mass of bodies will slow and damage your car. After years of experimentation, I think we’ll see a single, expansive open world that can be played online or off.
These are not only some of the best zombie games around, but examples of the most subtle, convincing writing in video games.
High-profile games like Dead Rising 3 and Dying Light prove the genre has a foothold in the next generation. 350 days have passed since the initial outbreak and you are one of the few remaining in the ruins of Union City, now known only as the Dead Zone. Grow and harvest a variety of crops and hunt, track or domesticate a multitude of wildlife to live off the land. Find or craft sight, sound or smell deterrents and attractor recipes and items to exploit the sight, hearing or smell of the zombies to throw them off track.
Upgrade your melee skill learning to craft better melee weapons and swing them harder & faster and even learn special finishing moves. Watch the leader boards and fight to be the Big Clan of the Wasteland or the Duke of Navezgane.
Players may choose to play offline by themselves or join others on community hosted servers in either PvE only or PvP configurations.
In order to survive players need to secure a source of food and water to stave off dehydration, famine and sickness which will ultimately lead to their characters permanent death. Firearms can also be equipped with different zoom optics and muzzles players pickup on their journey.
You can create and customize your character using a special skins maker and then show off on the battlefield!
Using this tool you can choose one of the presets or customize your own skin with the help of special drawing tools. Players enter the battlefield with nothing but a pixelated handgun and must shoot their way out of a tight spot. In fact, one of the game’s features is that you can create custom skins that you can upload to your Minecraft Mojang account.
In Survival, you’ll be fighting a specified number of enemies in each level before moving on.
You will be able to practice your shooting technique and get a few tips on how to jump, collect guns and weapons, and what to do when you’ve cleared a level. Zombies, skeletons, and ferocious bushes (at least, I think they are bushes) will chase you around until you gun them down. You can create your own game by selecting the map, choosing the number of players up to 10, and deciding how many kills wins the game.
State of Decay has become the fastest-selling XBLA game of all time, the creator of Garry’s Mod is making a zombie game, and the DayZ standalone title is coming along smoothly. Series protagonists Frank West and Chuck Greene were racing the clock in their respective games, instilling an omnipresent sense of urgency and dread despite the comical violence. In the book, protagonist Robert Neville forages for supplies and fortifies his home during the day so he can stave off undead attacks during the night. The mod is rough around the edges, but players dig the hardcore survival elements in bleak, expansive world. State of Decay is a flawed-but-fun 360 downloadable game that offers a more accessible, single-player survival experience. I believe State of Decay’s success proves console owners want a hardcore, open-world survival experience. Epic’s upcoming Fortnight promises to focus in on the zombie-defense element of Minecraft on a grander scale. The game looks like a blast, and the detailed zombie physics are something the genre could benefit from as a whole. Permadeath is a great way to keep players invested in the action, and I think we’ll continue to have it in future games. The Last of Us focuses on scavenging and survival, but beyond that it has few similarities to the other games mentioned here.
Telltale is continuing their story with a second season and an intermediary story called The Walking Dead: 400 Days. And watch out for the unique special infected enemies like the Acid Puking Hulk whose acidic vomit can melt blocks.
Perishables aren’t super common in Unturned and players will need to collect supplies in order to grow their own food sources and setup a sustainable camp to protect their supplies from other invading players. As players take out wandering zombies they’ll gain experience which can be used to increase special traits which boosts a players affinity in certain areas including survival, scavenging, stamina and marksmanship. This game really is a hidden treasure among the over hyped bullshit suck ass games made by big companies such as EA. Weapons such as hand grenade, dynamite and land mines are available for player to kill zombies.

The main difference is that this game is intentionally blocky instead of being the victim of the decade.
In multiplayer mode, you’ll be fighting against others in a bloody battle to the death in a player-vs-player game. That one re-spawn elixir will make you happy, but only until you get your head gnawed off by a bunch of cursed mummies. I can only imagine it has something to do with sending the skins to your Minecraft account. Plus, you can fight against your friends (or enemies) for hours in Multiplayer-vs-player mode. You’d think genre fatigue would set in, but then Naughty Dog unleashes its grim post-apocalyptic masterpiece, The Last of Us, which features cannibalistic, fungus-infected humans. Unpredictable interactions with other players foster emergent stories where players aid or murder each other. We will continue to see iterative improvements on the open-world zombie game until we’re able to play out our apocalyptic fantasies unheeded. I want more games with carefully crafted characters like the ones found in The Last of Us and The Walking Dead, but I think these games will remain rare gems in the genre. To do this players will venture into abandoned areas including towns, farms, and military bases where they can find items needed to craft fortifications and fend off attacks from encroaching enemies with makeshift traps. The upside is that the developer is working directly with the community and very approachable. Once you’ve run out of elixir, you’ll have to start at the beginning again, no matter how far you’ve gotten. However, I would have rather been given the choice of whether I wanted to save the skins to my photo library or not.
However, as the game increases in popularity, it is clear that the developers are spending more and more time creating the ultimate pixelated FPS. The mod was so successful that creator Dean Hall has been hard at work on a polished standalone version of DayZ. Demand is still high, and fans are kept from burning out thanks to developers’ constant innovation and refinement.
They will appear randomly and in spots you thought you had already checked, so always be on the move.
It is both exciting and rage inducing to get to the next level, only to have to start over thanks to a particularly hungry pack of birds.
New players are too busy harvesting lumber and fumbling with the game’s crafting system to notice the setting sun. During my first experience with the game, zombies and other monsters began their attack before I could build my home.
There's nothing that drives the human need for survival like worst-case scenarios, but flight isn't an option, so you must fight the waves and waves of zombies that incessantly attack your safe house. Player has to face some new terrors and new enemies like Fire Demon and Summoner.  X ray kill cam is available for the player so player can see bullets coming in slow motion. For example, your basic handgun takes four shots to kill a zombie while the six-shooter will take them down in two. The primal experience of burying myself in the ground to avoid groaning predators stuck with me. Since you're in charge it is you that will be sending your group of survivors off on missions - these take place in real-time so patience is also key with this game - to get such supplies, hopefully to see them return with building supplies and much-needed weapons. The Managing DeadThe full-on zombie-shooting action of previous titles like The Last Stand 2 has taken a bit of a back seat here, particularly when you look at the format of the game when you're in base camp. You can purchase special weapons in the game’s store, like the iconic miner’s pick axe from Minecraft or a crystal sword (possibly a nod to Adventure Time?). Your responsibilities are very similar to other resource management games like Farmville 2, only with a lot more death, killing, and blood spatter. The former mode is self-explanatory but the latter involves real-time management of your team, who will attack any enemy that happens to be in range - make sure to direct them to specific areas you want searched and explored however as you're literally responsible for everythingthat they do.You'll obviously encounter the in-game currency barrier at some stage (developers have to eat, you know), though this comes in the form of having the option to purchase the commodity of fuel, which lets you get on with your tasks more quickly and can be spent on accelerating a multitude of actions in the game.
You can also find fuel while out scavenging, though it is obviously a rarity otherwise this would effectively nullify the in-game transaction system. In all, it's a very reasonable system and I shan't complain about it as it doesn't negatively impact the gameplay in any discernible way.
Well done Con Artist Games for not selling us the hell out.As for the game's longevity, well, that part's a little less certain.
Sure, it's entertaining when you begin: you've got a load of tasks to complete and a lot of managing to do, zombies to kill, and survivors to recruit.
But switch to the long term and there isn't that much to do so you begin repeating things, over and over. Because it's a social game however there will be updates and you can expect things to improve on a fairly regular basis.
