The country’s first all-organic drive-thru has finally opened in California, with lines out the door as customers flock for a chance to support what could be the biggest step forward for industry ever. The new Amy’s Organic Drive-Thru restaurant opened in Rohnert Park, California, featuring an all-vegeterian menu packed with items like veggie burgers, salads, and even mac n’ cheese in both regular and vegan flavors.
As reported by ABC-7 News in the Bay area, the new Amy’s Restaurant has been completely packed with long lines in the dining area and in the drive-thru, and reported wait times of 15-20 minutes.
Others have chimed in on review sites noting that they were excited to see huge crowds with lines going all the way out the door, reminiscent of another chain working to change the food system: Chipotle Mexican Grill, whose popularity is exploding at the same time that McDonald’s is faltering. While other fast food restaurants import virtually all of their products from factory farming operations and give nothing back to the community, Amy’s actually grows produce on site thanks to its roof-bound garden. Amy’s, an independently owned organic frozen food company, also reportedly pays workers a living wage with health benefits and is believed to be the first vegetarian fast food restaurant as well. Every grocery, retailer and supermarket offer their customers methods and ways to save money on their grocery shopping. Although Kroger does accept manufacturer coupons, they can no longer be combined with Kroger digital coupons. If you have used any of these savings opportunities please share your experiences in the comment section below. To really grasp if you are getting a good deal on a store like Costco that sells in large quantities, you need to look at the price per pound. With that said, in this post we are going to take a look at the price of chicken at Costco.
When it comes to buying chicken – buying the whole bird is always going to be the cheapest per pound option. I wanted to share this video of how to remove a tenderloin from the chicken breast, so you can see what it looks like.
As for buying a Costco membership, keep in mind that we bought our furnace and air conditioner replacements there for HALF of what we were quoted by a reputable local heating and cooling company – same efficiency same features. We buy eye glasses for the whole family there – VERY inexpensive compared to other options. We bought a high-end queen mattress for half of what we would pay elsewhere for the same mattress from the same manufacturer. We bought a bottle of 365 pills that contain the same active ingredient as Claratin for our son’s allergy for about $12 a year, as opposed to about $15 a month for real Claratin at the drug store. Best source for incredibly inexpensive (but very very good quality) mens gold toe dress socks.
So…considering everything, our Costco membership pays us back many times over each year. Puff Pastry expands when baked, rising to about 8-times its original height; so a quarter-inch thickness of puff pastry dough will puff up to 2 inches high! Many of our products both foodservice and retail have been formulated with natural ingredients for use in natural food stores. These hors d’oeuvres are flaky, chewy, and impossibly good with a chilled glass of riesling. Position the sheet of pastry on a lightly floured counter so that a short side is closest to you. When you’re ready to bake, heat the oven to 425 degrees F and line two baking sheets with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat (or use nonstick baking sheets).
You can assemble the rolls to the point just before slicing and freeze them for up to one month.
Though we all have fond childhood memories of frozen chicken potpie (well, I do anyway), white-meat chicken in a pasty white sauce isn’t all that appealing to grown-ups. When the chicken has cooled, pull off the skin (it should be nice and crisp, so enjoy a piece as a snack), cut off the meat, and cut into small pieces. Put the roasting pan over medium heat and add back about 2 tablespoons of the chicken fat (if you don’t have enough, use butter). When the pastry is ready, scrape the filling into the baking dish, transfer the pastry top to the filling; if you like, brush the top with a little heavy cream and sprinkle with grated Parmesan.
Peaches are wonderful in this galette as well, but with nectarines there is no need to peel the fruit.

In a medium bowl, toss the nectarines and berries with the sugar, flour, and ginger, then pile the fruit onto the pastry round, leaving about a 2-inch border. But the bottled Evolution Fresh juices will appear at retail stores (they're already all over the West Coast) as well as at Starbucks locations, rolling out over the next few months.
The apple berry +fiber is a bit thicker, somewhere between a juice and a smoothie in texture. And while not quite as low-sugar, the essential vegetable juice packs plenty in: carrots, apples, celery, beets, parsley, spinach, ginger, and citrus all make an appearance. Fruit juices are on a refrigerator shelf of every grocery store in the country; Naked Juice and Odwalla are old news, and some of Evolution's products will slide right into that niche. Kroger takes this customer service above and beyond by offering three different ways that a customer can save on grocery shopping every day.
The digital coupon program is essentially a way to load items that are eligible to member only savings onto the members card, so that once in the store, you will not have to carry any paper coupons or ad. This section refers to the Kroger’s Shoppers Card, which enables you to use the digital coupons, receive e-mails, special online promotions, and personalized offers. Digital offers do not double up, and must be printed out to be used in store (cannot bring in a picture on a mobile phone). The prices are from the Costco location in Ann Arbor, Michigan recorded on Monday, September 29th, 2014. I like purchasing the whole bird because I like using all the bones to make homemade chicken stock afterward. It’s not guaranteed that when you buy chicken breast the tenderloin will still be attached.
So far I have only been looking at the membership in regards to food, because well this is a food blog. The palmier (PAHL me yay) is a classic shape in French pastry that’s easy to form and that shows off fillings beautifully. With your fingers, gently roll one long edge of one of the bands into the center and then roll the opposite edge in so the two rolls meet in the middle and resemble a double scroll.
With a very sharp knife, slice each roll into 24 pieces, arrange them on a sheet at least 1 inch apart, and bake until the pastry is nicely browned and flaky (break one apart to be sure it’s not still doughy in the center), and the cheese is melty but not burned, 10 to 12 minutes. Season the chicken generously with salt and pepper and arrange in a single layer in a heavy flameproof pan, such as a large skillet or small roasting pan. Return the potpie to the oven and continue cooking until the filling is hot and the pastry is deep golden brown, another 3 to 4 minutes. You can omit the berries, but they’re pretty and they accent the flavor and texture of the nectarines. Sure, it makes the occasional foray into breakfast food, but half-caf lattes and mocha Frappuccinos have always been its bread and butter. A juice company that Starbucks acquired in November of last year, which specializes in High Pressure Processing (HPP)—a way of cold-pressing juices to, they say, extract maximum flavor and nutrients. The orange ("made from 5 oranges!") does taste freshly squeezed, which is about the highest compliment I can give it; with a bright sweetness and a moderate level of pulp, it tastes the way I recall Simply tasting, which is to say, pretty damn orange-y.
I'm big on green juices, but have never found a widely available one that isn't mostly apple juice or kiwi puree; I'm much more partial to the salad-in-juice-form, maybe cut with a little lemon or ginger, but not loaded down with fruit. After a stint freelancing for New York and national publications, I came back as the New York editor in 2008 and then the Senior Managing Editor, overseeing all of the other sites that make up the Serious Eats universe. If you are bored with the same old roast chicken try this Alton Brown recipe for Broiled Butterflied Chicken.
I understand some people just can't deal with cutting up chicken if you have to fork over more money for the already boned thighs don't feel bad about that. Here, I layer mustard, ham, and Gruyère cheese with the pastry, so the flavors are classic, too. Press lightly so the rolls stick together (spread a few drops of water where the two rolls meet to help them stick, if you need to).
I use chicken legs or thighs here because dark meat has indisputably more flavor than breast meat, and the moist texture is perfect in a sauce.
Roast the chicken until tender and the juices run clear, or it registers 175 degrees F on an instant-read thermometer, about 45 minutes.

Cook the roux for about 1 minute, whisking constantly, then slowly whisk in the broth to create a smooth sauce. Slide the pastry onto a baking sheet and bake until puffed and light brown, about 15 minutes.
This galette shape is so easy and versatile that once you get the hang of it, you can play with all kinds of fruit—apple slices, pear chunks, raspberries, wedges of juicy plum. Bake the galette until the crust is lightly golden brown and the fruit is beginning to bubble, about 20 minutes.
So it's big news when Starbucks announces its intentions to get into fresh juice—launching the first Evolution Fresh juice bar in Bellevue, Washington this Monday. The juice bar itself will sell freshly squeezed juices, smoothies, prepared food, and more.
It's totally pleasant to drink, nothing too different from Odwalla or any other fruit-heavy blended drinks out there.
And that's what the essential greens is—all green: celery, cucumber, spinach, romaine, wheatgrass, clover sprouts, and a little lime. Honestly, this is a lot like drinking a not-too-thick pureed beet salad, vinaigrette and all. They're much closer to what companies like Blueprint Cleanse are making—but, at $5.49, literally half the cost.
Of course chicken tenders are good to make with this cut although most places just use cut up breast meat instead.
Lay a piece of parchment paper or waxed paper on top and gently compress the layers with the rolling pin. Add the asparagus to the boiling broth and cook for about 30 seconds; scoop out and add to the carrots.
Cook the sauce, whisking frequently, until it’s reduced to about 3 cups, is very smooth, and has the consistency of thick gravy, 10 to 15 minutes. Meanwhile, fold the vegetables, cooked peas and chicken into the sauce, and simmer gently to heat everything through.
The small amount of flour will help thicken the juices released by the fruit and keep the galette from getting too soggy; adjust the amount of flour up or down depending on the juiciness of the fruit. Brush the crust with the melted butter, sprinkle with the coarse sugar, and continue baking until the pastry is a rich golden brown, including the underside of the galette, and the fruit is hot and bubbly, another 15 to 25 minutes (depending on how juicy your fruit is). It's a little on the thin side, and I wouldn't mind an extra hit of acid to liven it up a little. We'll see how the cafes do, but as for their bottled products, we're pretty happy with Evolution. I feel I don’t need a membership to Costco just for chicken, but if I had one I might buy chicken there from time to time. Wrap the rolls in plastic and chill in until they firm up, at least an hour the refrigerator or 30 minutes in the freezer. This recipe uses a neat trick to avoid the potpie pitfall of underdone pastry in the middle of the pie: cutting the pastry to the size of the dish, baking it separately until almost finished, then transferring it to the chicken stew in the potpie dish to finish cooking, which marries the crust to the sauce without sogginess.
Remove from the heat, add the herbs, lemon zest, lemon juice, and a generous amount of pepper; it will probably be plenty salty, but if not, add more salt.
But it's smooth and drinkable, not sweet but not bitter, and it's actually made of vegetables. I originally wrote about the beef prices at Costco and that has become one of my most visited posts on the blog. Thats the enzyme that settles at the bottom of the bottle, and part of the normal production process with natural apple cider vinegar. If you know of another bottled green juice to buy for under $6, please let me know, because I'd love to try it.
Supposedly, Hippocrates used cider vinegar with the mother to treat his patients, and it’s supposed to have internal clensing and healing properties. In the month of October I will be releasing a series of posts exploring the cost and discussing whether or not those prices are good enough to justify joining the club.
