October 4, 2012 Pin2K Share26 +137 Tweet43 Stumble1Don’t limit your Halloween themed reading to Picture Books. Other series chapter books which have Halloween editions include: Katie Kazoo, Switcheroo, Ready, Freddy!, Magic Tree House, Stink, Nate the Great (I liked this one a lot for beginning readers), Horrible Harry, My Weird School, The Boxcar Children, Rainbow Magic (!) and of course the entire Goosebumps series.
So, will you and your kids be reading Halloween chapter books or will you stick to picture books this year? I am a Tweet loving, technology integrating, mom of two with a passion for classroom design! While big sis is at gymnastics, Daphne gets to listen and read along to a story on the Kindle Fire.
We’ve tried a couple of books in this Immersion Reading program—that are available as both Kindle books and audiobooks and have this transition-to-read feature that highlights the text as it’s being read. Our issue, at the moment, is that Daphne’s reading level and her interest and comprehension level are so far apart.
I can’t seem to find any easy readers on the list of Kindle books with Audible narration. But then I said yes to Beezus and Ramona, knowing that she would want to listen to it but would not necessarily be able to read along yet.
Like about 200 other children’s books on Amazon and Audible, it has this read-along feature. I love the idea of this Immersion Reading program but am not sure how to make it work for us at the moment. There are about 200 books for kids ages 6 to 12 with the read-along feature right now and I imagine the number will continue to increase! Audible is offering the audio narration for Immersion Reading at a big discount right now (for a limited time) while they introduce this feature. Use the Immersion Reading feature where the text is highlighted on the digital book for you while you simultaneously listen to the audio book version. As an experienced first grade teacher, I can tell you that teaching littles to read is indeed like rocket science! I was surprised to see this post in my favorite art blog:) This is a huge project for us right now, as my 13-year old son is still a struggling reader. The title says it all - this is great book that enables people following the instructions to make up to 23 different origami models of animals, none of which require more than 16 steps using basic folds.
Easy Origami Animals is a great origami book for beginners or for folders interested in some new ideas. I received this book from Netgalley in exchange for a review:I have read so many origami books, ranging from beginners to advanced mathematics and geometry heavy books, anytime I see a new book on the subject I read it, even if I have seen the same models a bunch of times, it is always nice to see how people approach them. Jenny and her urban feline friends gather together on Halloween to hear a performance from nose-flutist Madame Butterfly. The chaos-creating band of kids from the classic, The Best Christmas Pageant Ever, bring just as much mayhem to Halloween as they did to Christmas. Porcine wonder Mercy Watson is a seriously crazy pig and of course Halloween with her will be both disastrous and hilarious. This is a wonderful, beautifully written book about a boy being raised by ghosts who are protecting him from his parents’ killers.
Kid books are a bit of a passion of mine and I love sharing new books and reading other people's lists to find even more books! I listen to fiction and nonfiction books on my own and, as a family we always seem to have a good kids’ audiobook that we’re listening to together here and there throughout our days—in the car, while cooking or cleaning in the kitchen, and while drawing and doodling together.
This is an Immersion Reading experience for kids that combines audiobooks with digital books in a partnership between Amazon and Audible. It sparks an extra connection that boosts engagement, comprehension, and retention, taking you deeper into the book.
She followed along with her eyes for a while, but then asked if she could draw while she listened instead and I said yes, of course. Because of the current book selection, it seems to be better for kids who are farther along with their reading skills. Your daughter has a fantastic foundation to begin her journey learning to decode the symbols we call text. I would think it would work on any Kindle app, too, whether it’s on an iPad or phone. I recommend products that I use and love myself or that I think would be a helpful resource for you. For a few dollars and a few hours of your time, you can absorb the strategies and "secret sauce" of the master storytellers.
While I'm not a novelist, I also enjoy reading books about writing fiction because I believe there's much that nonfiction writers can learn from the craft of fiction. Contact the seller- opens in a new window or tab and request a shipping method to your location.

Import charges previously quoted are subject to change if you increase you maximum bid amount. Figures include birds — a cardinal, parrot, bald eagle, and cranes — and a fox, pig, hippo, elephant, lion, and others. The book starts by explaining the symbols used and how to make the four basic folds using the correct combination of which enable all the animals to be created. With easy-to-follow directions, diagrams, and pictures, even beginners can make some fun animals. There is something so relax and fun about making something out of just paper.I’ve made origami before, so I had an idea what I was doing when I started working through the animals in the book. And it is no surprise that I have seen instructions on how to fold a mouse, or a lion, but seeing the authors take on classic models is always a treat.
The blurred boundary between reality and make-believe worlds is just what every child hopes for.

This is the second book about fourth grader Hank Wolowitz whose invisible pet loves Halloween and decides to take charge of the holiday. I suggest you look at providing a more well-rounded approach, including phonics, pattern-books, a sight-word bank, and writing (writing and reading are best friends, to be taught in tandem). She began learning to read and write in the well-rounded manner you mention in Kindergarten and will continue to do so in first grade when school begins again in the fall. If you reside in an EU member state besides UK, import VAT on this purchase is not recoverable. Diagrams illustrate every step of the folding process, and full-color pictures depict the completed models.Internationally renowned author John Montroll has significantly increased the origami repertoire with his original designs. There are a wide range of animal models demonstrated - fish, birds, mammals, tame, farmed and wild all have a place in this collection of instructions which the author suggests “are appropriate for the beginner or teacher.”The book is well presented with clear instructions that are easy to follow and result in recognisable models!
The instructions are clear, meaning this makes a great book for children or those wanting to start out making origami. I found it surprisingly charming and it thoughtfully addressed anxieties over the Halloween scare factor. But the stories she wants to listen to are much more complex chapter books, such as Harry Potter and The Mysterious Benedict Society (both series that we’ve been listening to as a family). Listening to reading is a different skill than decoding text, so your work is helping your daughter learn to decode at this point. Although, just FYI, I recently bought my Kindle Fire after my old kindle finally bit the dust and I think I only paid about $60 for it.
Best known as the inspiration behind the single-square, no-cuts, no-glue approach, the American origami expert offers readers meticulously developed folding sequences that allow them to create better models with fewer steps. Thanks to the author, publishers and NetGalley for letting me look at this book in exchange for this, an honest review. The cat, dog and fox all followed the same general pattern, but ended up obviously distinct and adorable! The only animal I had trouble was the standing crane, and I could not get the legs to work. Unlike normal origami books, John includes a step-by step illustraion along with an explanation letting you know how to fold each of the animals.
Her ability to listen and comprehend is fantastic, and will help her learn to decode at a much faster rate. I usually have to choose cute or cool with art books, but the mix of cute origami animals with cool origami animals was perfect-- a brilliant decision on the author's part! That one part needed some clarifications, but everything else I could understand. There was a wide range of animals from very easy to somewhat tricky. I like the variety included as there are animals from almost every type, and very few are created the same way.My favourite was the elephant, and not just because it’s one of the first 3D style animals. Elephants are my favourite animal ever, and I was super happy to produce a good looking origami version. I received a free copy of this book in return for my honest opinionI gave this book a 5 out of 5 stars. It’s going on my elephant shelf for sure.Overall, if you like origami, I’d suggest checking out the book.
It has simple creations that are suitable for beginners, with good instructions, but there is enough variety and creativity that even seasoned folders will find an animal or two to enjoy.
