The role of a first aider and of course the importance of first aid cannot be underestimated, this article explains some of the basics requirements and skills needed by a first aider.
Every year, thousands of people are either seriously or fatally injured as a result of an accident.
Breathing – Check that the casualty’s chest is still rising and falling and try to listen to make sure that they are still breathing. To prevent any further harm – First aid also involves removing a person from a situation that could cause more harm as well as performing basic techniques to prevent the condition becoming worse, applying pressure to bleeding for instance.
To promote the person’s recovery – A first aider can also take the first steps to encouraging recovery from an illness or injury. The first thing that you as a first aider should do at the scene of an accident is to make sure that both you and the casualty are not in any more danger. All places of business should have a basic first aid kit and it should be in a place where it is immediately accessible.
British Standard 8599 provides good guidance on what a large, medium or small first aid kit might contain, however, none of this obviates the need to carry out First Aid Needs Assessment for your own premises and activities.
Remember to replace any used items in the First Aid Kit immediately and to always fill out an accident report. Unless a casualty has fallen from height or is thought to have sustained a neck or back injury when the casualty is unconscious but is breathing then they should be put into the recovery position. Put their upper hand under their head, ensuring that the side of their head is resting on the back of their hand.
If the casualty remains in the same position for 30 minutes then turn them over onto the other side. You might suspect that a person has a spinal injury if they have just sustained a blow to the head, which has knocked them unconscious. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation, commonly known as CPR, is a technique that a first aider is trained to do.
Place your hands on the centre of the person’s chest and, with the heel of your hand, press down by 5–6cm at a steady rate, twice a second. Continue with cycles of 30 chest compressions and two rescue breaths until they begin to recover or emergency help arrives. If you are not confident about giving mouth-to-mouth resuscitation then CPR can initially be performed with hands-only by pressing hard and fast on the person’s chest. There is great responsibility on the shoulders of a first aider as they are the initial caregiver to someone who is injured or whose life is in danger.

Obviously if a person is not breathing or their heart has stopped it is vital to call 999 before you do anything else.
