Texas performs worse than 41 other states in terms of child well-being,  according to the 2013 Kids Count report released by the Kids Count Data Center. The state does not break into the top 50 percent of states in any of the four categories, but it does perform better in the first three.
Factors that fall into that category include single-parent families, high-poverty, lack of high school diplomas and teen births. Texas had 52 teen births per 1,000 teens in 2010, which is an improvement over 62 in 2005, but the national average is only 34 teen births per 1,000. The state has more children with health insurance, more children attending preschool and more children with parents who have high school diplomas, but Texas still trails the national average in all of these categories. Texas performs better than the national average in terms of housing cost and parental employment, as well as eighth-grade math skills.
