Symptoms of peripheral edema include swelling of the affected area(s), which causes the surrounding skin to "tighten." The swelling from peripheral edema is gravity-dependent (it will increase or decrease with changes in body position).
In the case of pulmonary edema, there is often no evidence of fluid retention or noticeable swelling on examination of the patient's extremities. Lymphedema is the swelling of one or more of the legs and arms caused by poor function of the lymphatic system.
Read What Your Physician is Reading on Medscape Congestive Heart Failure and Pulmonary Edema »Congestive heart failure (CHF) is an imbalance in pump function in which the heart fails to adequately maintain the circulation of blood. Turner syndrome also called as Monsomy X is a genetic disorder in which the female child misses one pair of normal X chromosomes.
Normally every child inherits 23 pairs of chromosomes out of which two are sex chromosomes which determine the gender of the child.
The symptoms of this disease are swollen hands, webbed neck and wide feet are found on the infants.
Urticaria, commonly known as hives, is a condition where there is red, itchy swellings on the skin (wheals or welts) that appears and disappears often for no known reason. Urticaria occurs when certain chemicals that cause inflammation are released in large amounts for no obvious reason. Sometimes the immune system itself triggers this release of these chemicals and it is therefore said to be an immune-mediated activation. Angioedema is the swelling that occurs in the lower layers of the skin or the mucosal lining of cavities, often as a result of an allergic reaction. There are several different subtypes of urticaria that may be classified by the causes or triggers.
Physical urticarias triggered by physical triggers like mechanical force, temperature, water and sun. The causes behind urticaria is not always known although the disease process is fairly well understood. Contact with latex, animal hair, pollen, dust and other allergens similar to allergic contact dermatitis. Autoimmune diseases like systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), Sjogren’s syndrome and autoimmune thyroiditis. Apart from skin symptoms, urticaria can also present with various other symptoms some of which can be very serious and potentially life threatening.

Various other symptoms may be present which are systemic meaning it involves different sites and systems throughout the body. Some of the following tests may be helpful to identify the underlying cause of chronic urticaria in particular.
Corticosteroids are rarely used but may be needed for short period during a severe episode of urticaria. Tricyclic antidepressants may be useful to relieve itching particularly in chronic urticaria. Epinephrine may be administered for angioedema particularly when it causes airway obstruction.
Avoid becoming overheated or cold by dressing appropriately especially in environments with extremes of temperature. Take note of acute medication that may trigger urticaria or speak to a doctor about the possibility of chronic medication triggering the condition. Edema is a type of swelling caused by water and excess fluid retention in the body’s tissues including the skin and it mainly occurs in the hands, arms, legs, feet and ankles. According to ancient Chinese medicine and acupressure therapy, Edema or swelling due to water retention is caused due to weakness in the spleen and kidney meridians. Acupressure point SP3 or Spleen 3 is the most important point in acupressure treatment for water retention cure. This point can be stimulated on both feet by applying steady pressure using the thumbs and fingertips for 1 minute.
Acupressure point KD 6 or Kidney 6 is a potent pressure point for treating swelling and water retention in body and it shows prompt results.
This point can be activated in both legs by applying firm and steady pressure to the points using the thumbs for 1 minute. CV 6 or Conception Vessel 6 is another potent acupressure point that is extensively used for Edema treatment. SP 9 or Spleen 9 is a powerful acupressure point for swelling treatment that provides complete relief from water retention. This point can be stimulated on both legs by applying firm and strong pressure on the points using the knuckles for 1 minute. KD 2 or Kidney 2 is yet another powerful point of acupuncture and acupressure for water retention and swelling. This point can be activated in both feet by applying strong and steady pressure to the points using the thumbs for 1 minute. SP 6 or Spleen 6 is a powerful acupressure point for treatment of water retention in the body that provides effective results. This point can be activated on both the legs by applying steady pressure while holding the point with the thumbs and fingers for 1 minute. UB 40 or Urinary Bladder 40 is one of the most important acupressure points for treatment of Edema feet or swelling of feet.
This point can be activated on both legs by applying firm pressure using the thumbs, fingers, palms and knuckles for 1 to 2 minutes.
UB 56 or Urinary Bladder 56 is a useful acupressure point that works as one of the natural remedies for water retention cure.
The final acupressure point in the list of pressure points for treating water retention in body and feet is UB 57 or Urinary Bladder 57.
So, now that you know the precise acupressure points that should be used to treat bloating and swelling caused by water retention, stimulate them every time you feel bloated in order to flush out toxins from the system and restore fluid balance in the body. Thank you Bipasha, I have been using reflexology for many years, you have an excellent site on acupressure for the body and ANY ailments you may encounter. If your toes are always cold, one reason could be poor blood flow — a circulatory problem sometimes linked to smoking, high blood pressure, or heart disease.
Raynaud’s disease can cause your toes to turn white, then bluish, and then redden again and return to their natural tone.

The most common cause of heel pain is plantar fasciitis, inflammation where this long ligament attaches to the heel bone. Sometimes the first sign of a problem is a change in the way you walk — a wider gait or slight foot dragging.
This is usually a temporary nuisance caused by standing too long  or a long flight — especially if you are pregnant. Gout is a notorious cause of sudden pain in the big toe joint, along with redness and swelling (seen here). If you feel like you’re walking on a marble, or if pain burns in the ball of your foot and radiates to the toes, you may have Morton’s neuroma, a thickening of tissue around a nerve, usually between the third and fourth toes.
Itchy, scaly skin may be athlete’s foot, a fungal infection that’s common in men between the ages of 20 and 40. This foot deformity can be caused by shoes that are tight and pinch your toes or by a disease that damages nerves, such as diabetes, alcoholism, or other neurological disorder.
A sudden, sharp pain in the foot is the hallmark of a muscle spasm or cramp, which can last many minutes. We associate skin cancer with the sun, so we’re not as likely to check our feet for unusual spots. Sometimes an injury to the nail or frequent exposure to petroleum-based solvents can create a concave, spoon-like shape. Pitting, or punctured-looking depressions in the surface of the nail, is caused by a disruption in the growth of the nail at the nail plate.
Preeclampsia is a pregnancy condition in which high blood pressure and protein in the urine develop after the 20th week (late 2nd or 3rd trimester) of pregnancy. Causes The exact cause of preeclampsia is not known. For example, if a person is lying on their back (supine), the swelling will not appear in the legs, but will appear in the area around the sacrum.
If the child is female, it would have two XX chromosomes and if it is a male it would have XY chromosome. In developed girls, there will be incomplete puberty, small breasts and absence of pubic hair. Since they are infertile, they can either adopt a child or have a donor egg implanted on the uterus for having a baby. These chemicals include histamine, bradykinin, kallikrein and other vasoactive substancs which are stored in certain immune cells in the skin known as mast cells and basophils.
It may appear as deep welts on the skin or a swollen red area like when it affects the eyelids or lips.
Edema is caused when the capillaries leak fluid into the surrounding tissues which cause the area to swell. These particular pressure points can be stimulated to restore the proper level of water in the body and cure water retention successfully. This point is known as the Supreme Whiteness, and it is situated on the inside of the foot, in the hollow in between the big tone and the metatarsal bone, on the side of the foot. It helps to nourish the spleen meridian, relieve Edema, water retention, swelling and nausea. This point is called the Shining Sea, and it is situated on the inside of the ankle, one chon below the inside of the anklebone, in the hollow. This point is called the Sea of Energy, and it is situated two finger widths directly below the belly button. Place the fingertips of both hands between the belly button and pubic bone, in the lower abdominal area and gradually press one to two inches deep in the abdomen which taking long deep breaths for 2 minutes.
This point is called the Shady Side of the Mountain and it is found on the inner side of the leg, below the knee and under the large bulge of the bone.
It helps to relieve swelling, water retention, bloating, cramps, knee pain, leg tension and painful varicose veins. This point is known as the Blazing Valley, and it is situated in the middle of the arch of the foot,  at the midpoint between the outer tip of the big toe and the back of the heel. This point is also known as the Three Yin Crossing, and it is located four finger widths over the inner ankle bone, on the back inner border of the shinbone. This point is called the Middle of the Crook, and it can be found in the middle of the transverse crease of the popliteal fossa, in between the tendons of muscle biceps femoris and muscle semitendinosus.
It is a potent point for pain in the lower leg, arthritis pain, fever, hair fall, lower back pain, abdominal pain, digestive problems, viral and bacterial infections.
This point is termed the Sinew Point, and it is situated on the back side of the lower leg, 5 cun below the point UB 40, on the line joining the points UB40 and UB57, right in the middle of the muscle gastrocnemius. This point is called the Mountain Support, and it can be found on the back side of the lower leg, between the points UB 40 and UB 60 when the toe is extended straight. She has done her post graduation in English from The University of Calcutta and has flair to write articles on Massages, Acupressure, Reflexology, Acupuncture and Etc. The cause may be the slow loss of normal sensation in your feet, brought on by peripheral nerve damage. It can also be caused by a vitamin B deficiency, athlete’s foot, chronic kidney disease, poor circulation in the legs and feet (peripheral arterial disease), or hypothyroidism. Diabetes can impair sensation in the feet, circulation, and normal wound healing, so even a blister can become a troublesome wound. Your toes will be bent upward as they extend from the ball of the foot, then downward from the middle joint, resembling a claw. However, a melanoma, the most dangerous form of skin cancer, can develop even in areas that are not regularly exposed to the sun.
If part or all of a nail separates from the nail bed (shown here), it can appear white — and may be due to an injury, nail infection, or psoriasis.
The skin over the swollen area appears tight and shiny, and often when pressure is applied to the area with a finger, an indentation appears. However in turner syndrome children, the female child will have only one X chromosome, missing the other one.
Some doctors try giving estrogen therapy for girls to induce the growth of hairs and development of breasts.
Sometimes the swelling is of the airways and can lead to difficulty breathing, suffocation and even death.
Normally these chemical are only released when necessary, like if the skin is injured or there is an infection.
Chronic urticaria is more likely with autoimmune diseases which are usually chronic conditions. Swelling of the lips and tongue can cause slurred speech and the tongue or larynx may be responsible for a change in the tone and volume of the voice.

Testing is advised when other skin diseases need to be excluded or in chronic urticaria to identify any underlying diseases. Using cool water to bathe the area and topical applications (creams or lotions) like menthol 1% may provide some relief. It also aids to relieve gastric pain, digestive problems, heart pain and heaviness and lassitude experienced in the lower body.
It also helps to cure sore throat, digestive disorders, menstrual problems, eye problems, and epilepsy. It is an important point for treatment of jaundice and hepatitis, yeast infections and candida and male problems.
It helps to clear excess heat and aids to cure sore throat, post-menopausal problems, menstrual problems, diabetes and male impotence. It also aids to cure menstrual problems, male impotence, digestive disorders, skin diseases, headache, dizziness and insomnia. This point can be activated on both feet by applying strong pressure on the point using the middle finger and index finger for 1 minute. Thing point can be activated on both legs by applying strong and firm pressure to the points using the knuckles for 1 minute. But pain that’s not due to sky-high heels may come from a stress fracture, a small crack in a bone. Stress or changes in temperature can trigger vasospasms, which usually don’t lead to other health concerns. Arthritis, excessive exercise, and poorly fitting shoes also can cause heel pain, as can tendonitis. Lung disease is the most common underlying cause, but it also can be caused by heart disease, liver and digestive disorders, or certain infections.
If the joint is rigid, it may be hallux rigidus, a complication of arthritis where a bone spur develops. If the skin on your itchy feet is thick and pimple-like, it may be psoriasis, an over-reaction of the immune system. They may respond to stretching and exercises of the toes or you may need special shoes or even surgery. Other causes include poor circulation, dehydration, or imbalances in potassium, magnesium, calcium, or vitamin D levels in the body. Thick, yellow nails also can be a sign of an underlying disease, including lymphedema (swelling related to the lymphatic system), lung problems, or rheumatoid arthritis. If the nail is intact and most of it is white, it can sometimes be a sign of a more serious condition including liver disease, congestive heart failure, or diabetes. When urticaria arises by some other trigger like drug usage, physical stimuli and psychological stress then it is known to be non-immune mediated activation. It also arises for no known reason in the majority of cases (idiopathic urticaria) and the triggers are almost never identified. More seriously though, swelling of the airways can cause difficulty breathing and in severe cases this is potentially life threatening.
Oxygen may be administered as supportive treatment when there is airway narrowing with angioedema.
In certain cases, Edema may be a symptom of other serious diseases like kidney disease, cirrhosis, congestive heart failure which requires serious medical attention. It is also a significant point for women’s health issues like menstrual problems and hernia and male problems like impotence and seminal emission. It not only alleviates water retention, swelling and Edema but also treats hemorrhoids, leg pain, spasms, heel and foot pain in a successful manner. It helps to cure water retention, swelling bloating and Edema long with hemorrhoids, digestive problems, spasms and pain in the lower leg, paralysis and neurological disorders. A doctor can look for any underlying problems — or let you know that you simply have cold feet. One possible cause: Exercise that was too intense, particularly high-impact sports like basketball and distance running. Raynaud’s may also be related to rheumatoid arthritis, Sjogren’s disease, or thyroid problems. Less common causes include a bone spur on the bottom of the heel, a bone infection,  tumor, or  fracture. Within minutes it causes more blood to flow through the skin and for fluid to leak out of blood vessels into the skin thereby causing swelling of the skin. In most cases a trigger can be found such as certain drugs, foods, an infection or insect bite. Other benign cases of water retention and swelling such as premenstrual bloating, puffiness due to congestion can be healed with the help of acupressure therapy.
Slow-healing of sores also can be caused by poor circulation from conditions such as peripheral artery disease.
The condition may affect 1 out of 6 people at least once in their lifetime but in most cases it is acute and never occurs again. Tests to monitor the baby's well-being include pregnancy ultrasound, non-stress test, and a biophysical profile. You may receive different treatments to help trigger labor, or you may need a c-section. If your baby is not fully developed and you have mild preeclampsia, the disease can often be managed at home until your baby has a good chance of surviving after delivery.
The further along you are in the pregnancy before you deliver, the better it is for your baby. The severity of the preeclampsia. However, sometimes the high blood pressure will get worse in the first several days after delivery. A woman with a history of preeclampsia is at risk for the condition again during future pregnancies. The infant's risk of death depends on the severity of the preeclampsia and how prematurely the baby is born. Possible Complications Preeclampsia can develop into eclampsia if the mother has seizures.
This allows the health care provider to find and treat conditions such as preeclampsia early. Proper prenatal care is essential. At each pregnancy checkup, yor health care provider will check your weight, blood pressure, and urine (through a urine dipstick test) to screen you for preeclampsia. As with any pregnancy, a good prenatal diet full of vitamins, antioxidants, minerals, and the basic food groups is important. Cutting back on processed foods, refined sugars, and cutting out caffeine, alcohol, and any medication not prescribed by a doctor is essential.
