Mustard oil is a popular cooking oil and common ingredient that is available in kitchens throughout south-east Asia. This oil contains high concentrations of erucic acid (monounsaturated omega- 9 fatty acid), a toxic unpalatable fatty acid.
Individuals who are genetically predisposed to cancer should definitely avoid consuming this oil at all cost. The allergic property of this oil is attributed to the presence of allyl isothiocynate and erucic acid. Detailed nutritional studies have established a postive link between the consumption of adulterated mustard oil and dropsy.  Dropsy causes severe bilateral pitting edema of the extremities.
The low saturated fat content of this oil, along with its high antioxidant levels and cholesterol lowering properties makes it a popular cooking oil. Nutritional studies indicate that consuming large amounts of erucic acid rich mustard oil regularly causes a sudden and drastic dip in blood platelets. The high percentage of erucic acid (nearly 42 percent) in this oil is responsible for a marked increase in the risk of lung cancer.
The fibrotic lesions of the heart can be attributed to the presence of the monounsaturated fatty acid, erucic acid.


This condition is often accompanied by nausea, abdominal pain, glaucoma and breathlessness. The high acidic nature of erucic acid corrodes the entire respiratory tract over an extended duration of time. The formation of fibrotic heart lesions can lead to other serious cardiopulmonary conditions. Consuming erucic acid rich oils like mustard oil can unleash a host of health problems which includes anemia, fibrocystic heart lesions and even lung cancer. Allergic responses by the body to this oil include wheezing, asthma, and swelling of the skin.
In serious cases, people may experience drastic drop in blood pressure, chest tightness and excruciating abdominal pain.
