Weaning a baby from breast milk or formula (homemade or commercial) can be a fun but stressful time.  There are many theories on how to feed your baby.  When should you start solids?  How do you feed your baby?  Do you follow Baby Led Weaning (BLW)?  When do you start specific fruits, vegetables and grains?  Do you make food or buy commercial food?
I had to answer this question because I am currently feeding my child who is under the age of one.  As a mother and Registered Dietitian, I want to do what is right by my child and provide him with the best nutrition possible without any digestive complications.
After much research, this is what I learned: babies do have sources of other enzymes to help promote carbohydrate digestion and absorption.
It should be noted that the above paragraph has only been studied in adults and not infants. I firmly believe more information and studies are needed on the infant digestibility of grains and other food groups.
The current recommendation is to introduce solids around the ages of 4-6 months with commercially infant rice cereal thinned with breast milk or formula as a first food.[xi]  I personally did not do this but introduced mashed (very) ripe banana, mashed avocado and crumbled hardboiled egg yolk as a first food but thinned with breast milk.
In the future, I will still feed grains (non gluten grains-rice, oat, and millet) to my child who is not a year but I will also incorporate some of the recommendations of the Weston A. The mouth, the first portion of the alimentary, receives food and begins digestion by mechanically breaking up solid particles into smaller pieces mixing them with saliva, coming from the salivary glands, called mastication. The different salivary glands have varying proportions of two types of secretory cells. Sucrose binds to the active site on sucrase, and this puts stress on the bond between the 2 sugars that make up sucrose. Saliva is produced in the salivary glands and contains the digestive enzyme amylase which digests starch into maltose. The oesophagus is the tube that attaches the mouth to the stomach and food passes through this by the process of peristalsis. Peristalsis involves the contraction of the muscle behind the food and the relaxation of the muscle in front of the food. Dogs are predominantly carnivores, that is to say their digestive system is optimised to process meat. Serous cells produce  a watery fluid that contains a digestive enzyme called salivary amylase.
It has, however, been known for a long time that the modern day dog is capable of digesting carbohydrates as well.

It consists of one stomach as opposed to the four that ruminants (a mammal that digests plant-based food by initially softening it within its first compartment of the stomach) have, Food simply passes through in one direction without having to be regurgitated. The reason they are able to do this is that they produce amylase, an enzyme that breaks down starchy carbohydrates, in the small intestine.
The stomach itself contains extremely strong acids which quickly break down proteins and kills bacteria often found in decaying meat. Herbivores are better at this type of digestion because they produce amylase at the start of the digestive tract: in the mouth, in the salivary glands. This is why they can typically handle higher levels of bacteria in their food so scavenging food scraps won’t give them a upset tummy like it would us humans.
