The probiotic bacteria used in commercial productstoday are largely members of the genera Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium. To understand why probiotics are important, we first need to understand how valuable beneficial bacteria are to our health, and how prevalent they are in our bodies. In our gut, good bacteria can displace bad bacteria and influence our overall health, metabolism, digestion, and body composition.
Gut bacteria are involved in immunity and help to ensure our immune system doesn’t have an itchy trigger finger (think food sensitivities). Adequate consumption of probiotics can help to eliminate abdominal pain, gas, bloating, reflux, allergies, nausea, food poisoning and vomiting. While our intestinal bacteria are pretty tough little critters, their health can be compromised. And speaking of diet, if you eat animal foods, the gut health of the animal is important too.
Probiotics are found in yogurt, buttermilk, kefir, sauerkraut, kimchi, and bacterially cultured cheese. As with all products containing living bacteria, probiotic products must be cooled during storage. Probiotics seem to improve overall health, metabolism, immunity, digestion, and body composition. If you are healthy, aim for 1-2 servings of probiotic rich foods each day (use the food source list above). If you are healthy, aim for 2-3 servings of prebiotic rich foods each day (use the food source list above). Take note: You may actually feel worse before you feel better since bacteria release toxins. In it you’ll learn the best eating, exercise, and lifestyle strategies — unique and personal — for you. A daily powerful probiotic is one of the most effective ways, I believe, to staying healthy and keeping the colds, coughs and flues away. At the end of our detox retreats each participant goes home with 10 days supply of a professional strength probiotic, to welcome good bacteria into the freshly detoxed digestive system. Good bacteria in our large intestines take care of the last part of digestion, and are part of our first-line defence against bad bacteria.
Eating a diet of non-organic proteins, fibre-less processed cooked foods, sugar & alcohol, caffeinated and carbonated drinks, medicating (instead of nutrition and cleansing), toxic cosmetics and household products… Get the idea??? Unfortunately, we are often surrounded by advertising encouraging us to consume and create this kind of unhealthy internal environment, and our bodies can only deal effectively with a certain amount of the resulting toxicity.
Mainstream research is starting to link healthy strong immunity with the good bacteria content of the intestines, and is recognising that the extensive use of wide spectrum antibiotics diminishes the overall immunity and health of the patients. For our health we need to support the growth of good bacteria on the outside and inside of our bodies. A good way to grow good bacteria is provide a daily pro-biotic supplement, together with natural care -  natural oil soaps, moisturisers and a diet of healthy foods. Probiotic and pre-biotic rich foods (see full list below) include yogurt, kefir (a fermented dairy drink), miso or tempeh.
Eat Organic whole foods, unprocessed – fresh raw fruits, vegetables, green leaf, nuts and seeds as well as cooked whole grains with lots of fibre.
When we go into an old woods, or a mountain, a natural environment where animals are dying and defecating as usual, we find the air to be fresh and clean. I mean, we carry little bottles of hand sanitizer everywhere and pop antibiotics at the first sniffle. Now before you get the heebie-jeebies, know that these bacteria cells are much smaller than our body cells and so collectively only weight about 4 pounds, and they’re mostly concentrated in our GI system.
Try to get at least 2 servings of probiotic-rich foods — raw milk yogurt, raw milk kefir, water kefir, sauerkraut, kimchi, pickled veggies — into your diet daily. BUT commercial yogurt and kefir found in most grocery stores are to be avoided since they typically contain a lot of heavily processed ingredients (from the pasteurized milk to the sugar or artificial sweetener). Eat organic foods as much as possible since conventional fertilizers can kill the good bacteria in the gut (and have a number of other toxic influences on your body). Even though it’s best to get your nutrition through a nutrient-dense, real food diet, supplementation is necessary at times.
Prescript-Assist: This is a very unique probiotic supplement since it contains native soil-based organisms.
Bio-Kult: This is a good starter probiotic, with 14 different probiotic strains (very good) and a 2 billion live culture count per capsule.
Garden of Life Primal Defense Ultra: This is a good starter to intermediary probiotic, with 13 different probiotic strains (very good) and a 5 billion live culture count per capsule. Klaire Labs Ther-Biotic Complete: This probiotic is my current favorite, with 12 different probiotic strains and a 25 billion live culture count per capsule. I’ve also used Garden of Life Fungal Defense to help rid my body of bad bacteria and yeast before then repopulating with a high-quality probiotic.

Start small! If you’re just introducing probiotics to your system, start with a supplement that provides 1-3 billion live cultures or 1 serving of probiotic-rich food a day.

If I’m just starting down the probiotic path (I just started drinking a couple ounces of kombucha a day) should I start with the Garden of Life Fungal Defense before moving on to the probiotic? Well I did fungal defense because I suspected I had candida (a yeast) overgrowth and an imbalance of bacteria.
If you extracted all of the microbes that live in your body, you’d have over a quart of sludge. Scientists estimate that we have over 50 genera of bacteria that provide over 500 different species! Probiotics may even alleviate irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and dermatitis. When good bacteria flourish, bad bacteria and other micro-organisms such as yeasts and fungi are pushed out.
Traditional methods of meat preservation (such as the curing of salami) also use fermentation of Lactobacilli to preserve the food, although arguably industrially produced cured meats no longer have health benefits. Fermentation intensifies the stimulant properties of the leaves and produces black and oolong varieties.
We don’t digest prebiotics, which come mainly from oligosaccharides (complex starches), but probiotics love them.
If you’re hoping to prevent or alleviate a medical problem, you may need to increase the dose. Digestive enzymes are like chemical grinders that chew up substances and break them down for us so we can absorb them. We can do this by not disinfecting our skin or surfaces unnecessarily, by not feeding the bad bacteria, and by providing good bacteria with nourishment. When we disinfect a surface, externally or internally, as in the use of wide-spectrum antibiotics, we are creating a platform for the growth of hardier bad bacteria.
Which will enable you to quickly notice when there is a negative symptom, pain, change of smell, or composition, and to find a healthy response to the need your body is expressing. Reducing the burden of toxicity enhances functionality and balance of the body, and inspires an internal mental-shift by reducing internal toxicity levels. My own research and application of the Probiotics Supplement, Fermented Food Diet and Vitamins Protocol is specific to my own health condition. Also, the bacterial cultures used are often very short lived, so there may not even be any remaining probiotics in the product by the time you eat it! I suggest eliminating all refined sugar from the diet — trust me, it’s not as drastic as it seems and you won’t miss it a bit once your blood sugar regulates! And there are a lot of factors at play in our modern lives that damage our bodies’ probiotic store and microbiome, which is why I believe everybody should be taking a probiotic supplement.
You want at least 1 billion bacteria, though 10-30 billion live culture daily for adults is best.
Generally speaking, more = better since each different strain of probiotic has a different function and benefit in the body. I definitely recommend taking this at least when first starting to supplement with probiotics in order to repopulate the gut. However, I can’t stand the packaging — if you hate plastic pollution and excess packaging as much as I do, this may not be the choice for you on that basis alone.
However, the probiotics are cultured in dairy so should be avoided by anyone with a dairy sensitivity, and some unnecessary anti-caking agents (which are used for ease of production). This was a great choice for me, and helped to clear up come nagging stomach issues I’d been struggling with for years (buh bye, gas and bloating!). Then slowly work up to 10-30 billion live cultures or 3-4 servings of probiotic-rich food a day. The die-off is what is causing the distress here, not the probiotics, and this is only temporary as the microbiome rebalances.
However, I only support and endorse products that I use personally and feel would benefit readers.

This could be increased to 10 billion if you are hoping to alleviate a specific health concern. Bad bacteria does the opposite and strains the immune system by producing more toxins every day. Using wide-spectrum antibiotics can effectively kill good bacteria as well as the unwanted kind. This is because living organisms have a symbiotic relationship with bacteria, is helps us grow and it helps us compost, releasing nutrients into the soil.
Karuna Detox Retreat, our sister company, leads detox programs since year 2000, offering the expert guidance you need to achieve your health goals. When given a break from digesting new food the system works to repair and maintain itself, first by eliminating waste products from our cells via lymph system, the intestine and and the other of elimination: skin, liver, kidneys, lungs.
Otherwise, the bad bacteria can overpopulate the gut’s microbiome, a condition called dysbiosis. And individuals with severe dysbiosis may need to even avoid high-sugar fruits and carbs for a time as they work to rebalance their microbiome. But after it has done this job, we need to remove it from the water since it will kill the good bacteria (plus, most chlorine-treated water has many carcinogenic byproducts). So take your probiotics on an empty stomach when there is less acid present so the probiotics can get in alive to do their job.
Thank you for supporting Body Unburdened and the work I do to help readers live non-toxic, healthy lives!
So depending on your gut and if you have any issues that may indicate whether or not you have an imbalance, you may or may not want to try that. Really all probiotics are doing are repolulating the bacteria that should already be in your gut.
Here I share all the healthy living tips & tid-bits I've learned while working towards a body unburdened: a healthy, all-natural body the way nature intended. Fermentation organisms produce alcohol, lactic acid, and acetic acid, preservatives that retain nutrients and prevent spoilage.
The bad smell associated with bowel movements, for example, has a lot to do with the lack of good bacteria content. See What’s In Your Water for more info on drinking water contaminants and quality filtration system suggestions. It worked really well for me and I was happy to have minimized some of the imbalance before taking the probiotics.
Also, gut health is so important to overall health and so probiotics could help with hormonal issues in that sense — if poor gut health is preventing someone from properly absorbing nutrients, for example.
