Studies have shown that intestinal probiotics, (often just called probiotics), can help IBS symptoms. The trouble is that many people buy probiotics that don’t contain the right bacteria for IBS. If you have IBS, there’s a good chance your intestinal bacteria might be out of whack (the technical term for that is dysbiosis). There are many ways this can happen, including a poor diet, illness, or the use of antibiotics. Once the residents of your bowels become unbalanced, you can get those familiar IBS symptoms of bloating, abdominal pain, diarrhea, etc. A complete diet change to encourage the needed bacteria to multiply (which can take a while and may never happen).
And when you do get an infection or illness, sometimes the doctor needs to give you antibiotics to kill the bad bacteria. Now some people that exercise and have the perfect diet, may be able to get their intestinal bacteria back in balance with no assistance.
According to this study, the best probiotic for IBS is bifidobacterium infantis, sometimes called bifidobacterium or b. So if you try probiotics, you may want to look for bifidobacterium infantis,  bifidobacterium or b. The best probiotics for IBS won’t do you any good if the bacteria gets wiped out before it reaches your intestines.
Note: you should talk to your doctor before using probiotics, especially if you have a compromised immune system. In my layman’s opinion, I think that you are probably having a problem with other things in the yogurt. A gastroenterologist recently told me about VSL 3 and also peppermint oil capsules as well.
I can attest that VSL3 helped me tremendously, and I’ve been taking one-month courses of it about once every six months for the past two and a half years. Correlation does not mean causation, but I had my first solid bowel movement in like a year after a week and a half of VSL3 and have believed in it ever since. I’ve tried a few probiotics (and yogurts like Activia) that claim to help with IBS and other bowel issues, and had found them helpful only when I took them with antibiotics to prevent diarrhea or yeast infection. As far as probiotics, there are some studies that say the best probiotic for IBS is bifidobacterium infantis strain 35624. As far as brands, different brands of the same bacteria seem to work betthr for some people than others. Now, I shy away from making recommendations, as I think people need to make their own choices, but I’ve long heard of cascara sagrada as an herb that helps with constipation.
I usually try to eat yogurt at least twice a week to get the good bacteria,  but recently I have discovered Kefir. Think of probiotics as your army of soldiers defending against attackers that want to make your body sick. The bad bacteria like to feed on the sugar, alcohol, and processed foods that our common American diet is loaded with.
Each day try to replace one processed or high sugar food or drink with a prebiotic food (such as almonds, banana, kiwifruit) or a probiotic food (such as yogurt or kefir). Perhaps not the scientific proof that we demand today but fermented foods have had a reputation for enhancing health since Neolithic times. And it is within that diverse array of fermented foods that we ate in the past - foods that our grandparents ate - foods that many of the world's less developed nations still eat - that probiotics are found. Yogurt, perhaps the best know of fermented foods, was mentioned in the bible and Elie Metchnikoff, an early Russian biologist who devoted his studies to the human immune system, believed that the secret of longevity rested in the regular intake of fermented food. And as Metchnikoff lived into his seventies in a time when the average age of death was less than fifty years it is clear that his daily drink of soured milk, brimming with healthful lactc acid bacteria, did him nothing but good. It is from this vast army of lactic acid bacteria found in foods preserved through the traditional means of fementation that probiotics come. And whilst probiotics are the "darlings" of the scientific world with their studies and endorsements, any lactic acid bacteria will do you good. So where do you start if you want to naturally increase your exposure to these health promoting "bugs" and the benefits of probiotics? By increaing your intake of L acidophilus you will gain more Vitamin K, more anti-microbial substances such as acidolin, acidolphilin, lactocidin and bacteriocin and improved immune function. And by increasing your intake of Bifidobacterium you benefit from increased vitamin and protein synthesis, less colonization of bad bacteria, stimulated immune response and better digestion and absorption of foods.
Over the course of evolution the human body has evolved to live in harmony with these microorganisms but in the modern world, sadly, they are lacking in many of the foods we eat as we have moved away from the fermented foods and cultured milk products that our ancestors ate. The consequence of this is that many of us suffer digestive and immune system health ailments that were not so prevalent in the times of our grandparents.
Research shows that different strains of bacteria are needed to help with different ailments.
Do you want to take control of your own health and eat real foods that will naturally enrich your gut flora?
