One of the only data recovery and computer forensic firms in the country with the same kind of high-level accreditation as the FBI, Flashback Data is the last resort for problem phones that might be hiding secrets. We sat down with their team to learn a little bit about what happens when a phone shows up as evidence. Sure, we've heard stories about the police being foiled by the old pattern-lock, but real professionals have bigger guns at their disposal. These modest black boxes and their army of cables are the entry point into just about any secured phone.
Using a combination of mostly secret, proprietary hardware tricks and probably a healthy dose of black magic, the gadgets get to work using the second piece of the puzzle: a special bootloader modified to rip through PINs and passwords like wet tissue paper. With the right amount of finesse, magnifying glasses, and soldering, most phones can be brought back from the brink. Should both of those methods fail, the phone is still in play; it's just a little bit longer a haul. The memory on your phone is stored in a form that's fit for machines, not humans, and the go-between is a small, integrated computer called the microcontroller. If you're working with an older iPhone, or an Android handset though, it's possible to fake the microcontroller with special hardware, and translate from the chip's machine language back into to something resembling human-readable data. Finding those fragments and making them back into something halfway meaningful still takes a little work though. But in the end, that's a minor if annoying layer on top of the technologically wizardry that's at the heart of rescuing unique and irreplaceable data that can be the lynchpin in a mystery, offering first-hand info on whodunit, howtheydunit, and even whytheydunit. So next time you confide in your trusty pocket companion, remember: no matter how dead you think that phone may be, the ghost of its data can always come back to haunt you.
The Pomodoro Technique can help you power through distractions, hyper-focus, and get things done in short bursts, while taking frequent breaks to come up for air and relax. The Pomodoro Technique was invented in the early 90s by developer, entrepeneur, and author Francesco Cirillo. Negotiate a time when you can get back to them about the distracting issue in a timely manner.
Call back the other party when your pomodoro is complete and you're ready to tackle their issue. Since a timer is the only essential Pomodoro tool, you can get started with any phone with a timer app, a countdown clock, or even a plain old egg timer.
The Pomodoro Technique is often championed by developers, designers, and other people who have to turn out regular packages of creative work. At this stage, you have the tools required to get up and running with the Pomodoro system if you want to give it a try. The new One looks sharp, performs well, has solid battery life and improves on its predecessor in most categories.
There's no mistaking the fact that the new One (aka the M8) inherited a lot of traits from its predecessor, including BoomSound speaker grilles, a curved back and horizontal stripes.
One other thing to consider here is that while the One's all-metal exterior looks great and is quite durable, it's still susceptible to small scratches, if not more so than the previous model.
In comparison to the (now) old One, this new model is just as thick (9.3mm) but is taller, wider and heavier.
If you used the original One, the back of the new model will look quite familiar -- arched back, flash, camera, logo, horizontal stripes, another camera. If you liked the 1080p Super LCD3 display on the original One, be prepared for essentially the same experience. The screen itself is protected by a slab of Gorilla Glass 3, which is, of course, designed to be scratch-resistant.
Lastly, the M8 is also rated for IPX-3 liquid protection, which means it's protected from water spraying onto the phone at a pressure of 80-100kPa for five minutes at any angle up to 60 degrees from the vertical.
La Bonne Etoile Artists Retreat was specifically developed to assist artists and writers who would benefit from an experience in another culture, along with a time of seclusion and solitude.
Because there is more to this artists retreat than beautiful landscapes, long dinners, and relaxing in the beautiful French countryside if one will allow it.
Perhaps you approach the finished piece, and the process, with a purely aesthetic attitude… appreciation. But not the Red Sea… as most of you know, France is well known for it’s beautiful wild poppy fields that scatter the countryside like smears of red paint. It was touch and go but we made it to Paris.Despite the transit strike that was going on when we arrived in France, our artists group managed to make it into Paris by train one day. First we all walked over to the Musee d’Orsay where a few of us lunched in the exquisite restaurant before touring the museum.
Jane and I then went through the Impressionists wing of the Musee d’Orsay and because we were so awestruck we wandered through too slowly. Then off we went across the Seine river and through the Tuileries Gardens to the Musee de L’Orangerie.
As our day in Paris neared the end, we walked a different route back to the metro, through some elegant areas. We started off our first night in the studio with a demo from Margaret, shown in progress here. In addition to our paintings of our model in the studio, we also had some photo shoots in the garden and  the house, using ourselves as models. And I am proud and honored to say I now own this one that Margaret painted of us (Margaret and me) at the piano. I had to have this painting by Margaret Dyer, not only because I think it’s breathtaking, but because it is such a beautiful example of what she achieves in the skin of her nudes. Next up: our Vernissage, which was the party where all of our work was displayed and friends and neighbors came to see! After more than a week of painting in the studio, we held our Vernissage, the reception and showing of our work. Armed with an arsenal of specialized hardware and technicians who know their way around it, the firm rarely meets a phone whose guts it can't spill. Getting inside isn't just one trick, though; the magic bullet is a combination of couple different ingredients. It verifies that everything else that comes on after (like your operating system) is secure and normal and on the up-and-up. PINs, patterns, and even passwords are primarily designed to provide security against human beings; 10,000 codes (the total number of unique 4-digit PINs) is a formidable stack to work through when all you've got are two thumbs and a short attention span.
Besides, commonplace thugs aren't interested in you nearly as much as they are in selling your stolen phone.
The first step of mining a phone that's officially dead is to dig in and rip the data off its broken chip.
But with cases this dire, the phone's microcontroller is generally dead as a doornail, so what you have after extraction is a whole mess of unreadable garbage data.
Instead, digital detectives are digging through clones of the each phone's consciousness mirrored onto computers. For one, it means that the physical evidence that is the phone can stay locked away somewhere secure and free from tampering. Bits that aren't being used on the master list are taken, one by one, to make new pictures and new texts.
With special software that combs through code at the hex level, professionals can start to pick up on broken fragments of something that might be worth looking at, whether it's half a .jpeg or a few choppy seconds of video.
When it comes to computer forensics, the actual search and recovery is only building up to a final burst of thrilling documentation. A phone can provide invaluable first-hand testimony against its owner, and that's data worth digging for. You can select your timer alerts so you know when to take a break, or reconfigure the work times and break times to suit you. Plus, you can estimate how many pomodoros you'll need to complete a task, and then track your progress. Tap to start the timer and get to work, and take your breaks when your phone's alarm goes off. You can customize work and break durations, review your work history to see how your focus is improving, easily see how much time is left in your work session, and the app even offers a star-based rating system to keep you motivated. Don't hesitate to experiment with others, but remember, the focus of the Pomodoro Technique is on the work, not the timer you use.

If you're making headway and the timer goes off, it's okay to pause the timer, finish what you're doing, and then take a break.
Since it only really impacts how you work, you don't need to get other people on-board with it before it's useful. With luck, it'll give you a way to be continuously productive while keeping you from burning out.
In the last two years, the company has cranked out beautifully crafted unibody devices like the One X, One S and Windows Phone 8X. Even if your phone has only fallen victim to wear and tear, it likely won't look as brand-new as the day you bought it. The volume rocker still sits on the right, but it's not completely flush with the chassis anymore.
The M8 retains its predecessor's resolution and display tech, but steps up to a slightly larger 5-inch screen. Our workshop instructors are well known for quality, patient instruction for all levels of students. For every less than satisfactory painting there is a lesson learned to make the next one better.
During his first demo I was excited, motivated, and ready to conquer my first painting of the workshop. Perhaps the most important aspect is pushing yourself to learn, to improve, to grow as an artist and a person.
However, a solid red field is harder to find than one might think because they are quickly covered up with crops, leaving only a hint of red peeking out here and there.
This will be the last of it I think, but I just had to shoot this little pictorial your way.
They are hollow on the inside, you unscrew the little gold birdie, and fill the inside with hot water so that the porridge stays warm. Jane and I had never been to Paris before, so we were going to be mighty disappointed if we were that close but couldn’t go. So we didn’t have time to view many of the other rooms in the museum before it was time to meet up with our group again. Her process is so unique, with emphasis on value and the layering of warm and cool colors to give a vibrant, energized effect. After about a week, there were so many paintings hung that you couldn’t find a spot anymore! We had a photo shoot where we donned robes and I pretended to play while Margaret  enjoyed my imaginary talent.
Her method results in the most beautiful colors coming through on the skin, the drape, sheets, everything. But not all of it is visible to the human eye, no matter how powerful the assisting microscope or black light. Normally bootloaders come locked, so that you can't load up deep, OS-level software the phone's manufacturer isn't cool with. But when it comes to folks like Johnny Law, who are interested specifically in your data and are absolutely determined to get it, there's not much your little passcodes can do to get in their way.
Sometimes, this is as easy as slapping the chip into an adapter and plugging it into a computer. From the 3GS on, iDevices sport default 256-bit AES encryption, stuff that's (as far as we know) too tough for even the NSA to crack. It also means that there's no risk of polluting the digital crime scene; if you're cracking away at a copy of a copy, there's no risk of accidentally treading through a puddle of digital blood. Phones that are evidence have to be very carefully controlled, their whereabouts recorded at every turn, movements from the closet to the workbench and back again noted, the processes behind digging up certain nuggets of data meticulously described so that they can be reproduced. You can't do a lot of tweaking to the work and break periods, but you get notifications when to take your breaks and when to go back to work, and you can go back over your day to see how many Pomodoros you've accomplished over the day. You can even customize the sounds, and hear the clock ticking when you lock your phone so you stay on task.
That means everyone from authors writing their next book to software engineers working on the next big video game can all benefit from the timed work sessions and breaks that Pomodoro offers. If you're a system's engineer with tickets to work, you can set a timer and start working through them until your timer goes off. There's more to the picture here, and Cirillo's book can offer more guidance and specific examples if you need them. Don't worry if you don't rack up five or ten pomodoros in a day: Many people who love the method note you may only get one or two in before you're distracted by something unavoidable. On paper, the answer is yes: It has a larger screen, offers two curious-looking rear camera sensors, boasts an improved version of HTC's Sense UI and features a chassis with even more metal. What's more, we'd like to see some more improvements to the One's display and HTC's UltraPixel technology, which were once among the best in their class. And believe it or not, the phone is made from even more metal than last year's model: roughly 90 percent of the chassis is made from aluminum, compared to 70 percent for the M7.
It was challenging to figure out how to apply the finish on such a curvaceous phone without it coming out looking clumpy and inconsistent. Not only is the new finish slippery, but the One also has fewer places to get a firm grip since it evolved from a 4.7-inch screen with blunt sides to a 5-inch screen and sides with sharp curves. In fact, in the brief time I've been using the One, I've already noticed a couple of dings around the edge of the device.
That said, the phone isn't uncomfortably heavy and isn't an awkward fit in my hand, either.
Since I regularly hold the phone in my left hand, this setup is much less awkward than it was on the M7, which put the same button on the top left. On the original One, we often grew frustrated at how difficult it was to know if we'd actually pressed the volume buttons, so we're happy to see that it now pokes out a little bit. Yep, there are indeed two "cameras" on the back, as well as two LED flashes, but we'll go into more detail in a later section. Display snobs will note that this results in lower pixel density, but unless you're looking at the two displays side by side, you're probably not going to notice. Croyle tells us that the answer is no: The company applied a special protective coating to prevent additional scratches and impacts that may normally weaken the glass. Note that this doesn't mean you can accidentally dunk your phone into a pool or sink, but you'll at least feel more comfortable walking through a rainstorm.
La Bonne Etoile Blog has been designed to expand the richness of that community by continuing the quest to create and recreate together. Pressure and expectations that we put on ourselves are starting to melt as we sink into the experience. In the midst of all the class and refinement of the City of Love, crazy came to town when we rolled up in our 12 passenger van. To walk up to an easel, leave it all on the canvas, and whether it’s good or bad, to get up and do it again.
It was full of fancy clothes, shoes, and junk from my daily life that I was convinced I would not be able to live without. So, the group decided early on that if we came across a solid field of poppies, we would stop to take pictures, no matter where we were going or how late it would make us. Our beautiful model sat for us for several days and we usually painted one pose in the morning and one in the afternoon.
Btw, all laundry done at La Bonne Etoile was hung on the clothesline to dry, which was so fabulous!
I will forever have this as a wonderful reference, not to mention a memory of my weeks studying with Margaret.
Other times, it involves rigging up a whole jungle of wires to suck the data right out of the phone's dead brain. Each handset's unique key is burned right onto its silicon, so it's not like it can get lost, but it means that the only way to get the data off the phone is to get the whole phone working again, microcontroller (and i's device-specific unencryption abilities) and all.
But most importantly, it lets you see deep into the phone's very soul, beyond the thin veneer of unmodified call history and undeleted texts and photos.
Likewise, when you delete something, it's not being taken out of the closet and destroyed; it's just getting erased from the list. This trains your brain to focus for short periods and helps you stay on top of deadlines or constantly-refilling inboxes.

Cirillo's book, The Pomodoro Technique, is a helpful read, but Cirillo himself doesn't hide the core of the method behind a purchase.
Alternatively, you can buy a tomato timer and a copy of the book together from him directly.
Then it's time for a break, after which you come back and pick up where you left off, or start a new batch of tickets. The upshot however is that those one or two pomodoros may be more productive than anything else you do all day. The phone exceeded nearly all of our expectations, but that also left a big problem: We now expect history to repeat itself. It appears, then, that there's a lot to love here, but it's difficult to take our breath away twice in a row. The phone's fantastic industrial design and anodized aluminum shell are just two reasons it remains one of our favorites to this day.
That means the phone no longer sports polycarbonate accents on the top, bottom and sides; instead, metal wraps all the way around until it reaches the display. Croyle didn't get into specific details on how his team overcame the problem, but the end result is obvious: a body that looks even sleeker and more premium than the M7. I can't find a place to rest my fingers without feeling like they're going to slip off, so keep in mind that you'll need to be careful with the phone if you buy it. Granted, the M8 has new motion gestures that almost make the power button unnecessary, but we'll dive into that later. Second, by switching to a smaller size HTC was able to make room for a second nano-SIM without making sweeping changes to its internal design. Turning the phone over to the front, you'll see a much-improved 5MP front-facing camera near the top, as well as virtual navigation buttons and a logo below. As on last year's model, the panel looks sharp, bright and vibrant; viewing angles are wide and the display is easy to see in direct sunlight as long as you push the brightness up to 75 percent or higher. Be sure to visit the individual websites of the artists, you will find links to La Bonne Etoile workshop information there as well.
I walked to the Eiffel Tower by myself because I’ve always wanted to and it was on my own personal bucket list. But this morning, after a decent start, I began to lose control of my painting and grew frustrated.
It was because I realized that I was finally able to push myself mentally to get better at something that I love, and that I needed to embrace this. I may be the only one who doesn’t practice this as regularly as I should, but I suspect that is not the case. However all of these things became so meaningless the second I arrived at La Bonne Etoile and began to realize what I was really there to do. Only clothes that are suitable for plein air painting in lush fields and impromptu bike rides through the French countryside.
As we entered the second week of the workshop, we began to feel that we were never going to find the elusive field that beckoned Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz. Good thing the teddy bears were watching closely … one of these might have found its way into my purse. But I did come across this draft that I had all ready to publish … photos I took of doors and windows of France.
Beyond this door is the artist studio of La Bonne Etoile in France, where we spent blissful hours learning the amazing pastel painting methods taught by the great Margaret Dyer! For me that meant working much faster than I was used to and so my paintings didn’t feel very accomplished or complete. If the microcontroller is dead for good, there's no hope for unencryption, and you're stuck with this undecipherable chunk of encrypted digital slag. If you want Kindle or ePub versions of the book, grab them directly from Cirillo's store as well. If you build things or work with your hands, the frequent breaks give you the opportunity to step back and review what you're doing, think about your next steps, and make sure you don't get exhausted.
Of course, our high opinion of the M7 doesn't just mean we're excited to play with its successor; we're also holding it under a lot more scrutiny. Throw in some rounded corners and a brushed-metal finish on the back, and you've got yourself a beaut. We praised this button on last year's flagship because HTC managed to integrate the IR blaster into it, but the company didn't feel it was necessary this time around.
Many manufacturers have to redesign their phones entirely, just to find a way to stick a dual-SIM setup inside. Those efforts were stunted when the metro station we planned on exiting through was closed off due to a demonstration. We all began to congregate at the same cafe, discussing our day over tonic waters and beers, until we were all together again.
With a little help from my kind instructor, I was able to finish it (it’s an OK start) but I still felt a little defeated.
Only the necessary toiletries because the light on a candlelit terrace during dinner is very forgiving- no make up required.
However, one sunny day, on the way to meet Jerome at the truck stop for lunch (this truck stop in no way resembles an American truck stop, just to be clear) we spotted it. In the beginning this was so frustrating, but then I began to realize  that I was there to learn the process, not to turn out polished paintings.
That means there's already an image of your phone out there, in a complete enough form that it's plenty useful for forensics. Still, beauty is also in the eye of the beholder: A few Engadget editors prefer the new M8, while others would rather hang onto last year's M7.
Instead, the IR is housed underneath a piece of smooth-looking plastic that looks like it belongs on KITT. HTC's essentially eliminated this problem by planning ahead and building the dual option into the phone from the very start. This time HTC promises richer and louder sound by using a new amp, throwing in a new DSP and deepening the chambers housing the speakers. Like most of us, during the year since last summer at La Bonne Etoile I had gone back home and become once again absorbed with my job, my life, my dog, etc leaving little time for myself and my art. I was there to learn, paint, create, laugh, taste, smell, feel, and soak up every second of the experience that would be over before I knew it.
We had taken a different way than normal from the Chateau Monte-Tilly, and it seemed to be fate, because if we had gone the usual way we would not have been able to see them. Sadly, the charger that comes included in the box only supports QuickCharge 1.0, which means you'll need to pay for an optional accessory just to take advantage of the faster charge time. At this point all we could do was laugh and continue to count off as we walk to the exhibit from the Tuileries. Post exhibit we lunch at a cafe near the Grand Palais, scoring seats right on the corner with the primo people watching. Only the essentials so I can spend my second summer at La Bonne Etoile fully immersed in the experience.
We drove the van right up into the field and jumped out of the van, running towards a sea of red flowers. A great tennis instructor will hit the ball to you so you can actually play the game and enjoy the experience.
Either way, we took a few moments to drink it in, snapped a few pictures, and then forged on to lunch. A tennis instructor who claims to be great will slice balls at you left and right to prove to you (and themselves) that they are better than you at playing tennis. Most of the group went back the next day to paint our beloved field, and the results were truly lovely.
We all know that to truly learn something new, one must enjoy it enough to have the passion and drive to continue on, even when it gets frustrating. Jim makes the learning enjoyable- always with a positive spin, a willingness to help, and a calming tone of voice that soothes the stressed voices inside our heads.
