One of the many powerful aids to illustration in Adobe Illustrator is the facility to create and use repeating patterns. The second reason for avoiding them has been that if you did create your own repeating pattern, once it was in the swatches palette, it also became inflexible and un-editable. The purpose of this tutorial is to explain in Illustrator how to make a pattern, whether you’re using Illustrator CS5 (or earlier) or Illustrator CS6. To test any swatch presets, create a new document and use the Rectangle Tool to create a box to fill. Before getting started though, let’s create a random, simple pattern just to give you a quick and dirty idea how patterns work in Illustrator.
Now when you look in the Pattern Swatches window you’ll see a new swatch - the one you just created.
However, if you use a clipping mask to create a pattern tile, when you define the pattern, everything hidden by the clipping mask will be included in the swatch, thus leaving you with lots of unwanted white space. After you’ve done this, group the elements of the pattern and create a square (or a rectangle) over the top. Up to this point the process of creating the pattern design has been pretty much identical for both Illustrator CS5 and CS6. This means that you’re not necessarily tied down to rectangles and squares if you want to create a seamless tile.
I get many questions on mommies or grandmothers who want to make a quilt for their baby or grand-baby.
Now, heat up your iron and press all seams open by pushing them with your finger open first and then ironing them flat. Now, I got so excited how colorful it looked that I got a little ahead of myself and forgot to take pictures for the next steps. Now, you can secure all your layers temporarily with basting pins or if you don’t have any, safety pins will do just fine also.
If this is your first time quilting and you have a hard time keeping a straight line, don’t worry, make them a little wonky on purpose.
When you are done with the first half, just repeat with the second, always starting and finishing with a stay stitch. Starting all the way on the outside, align your foot on the seam where the white means the white and start quilting. Please head over to my magical fast and easy machine binding tutorial to finish off your quilt with a clean binding.
Please let me know how you got on and feel free to link to your blogs if you have made this quilt. Thanks, my 2 year old cuddled with it right away even though I meant to donate it to our Montessori school. Yes, I wanted to make the smallest size possible, make the most use out of the charm pack and it fits a yard in the back. I’ve never tried my hand at quilting before, but I would love to, so I would probably make this quilt! Now that you know what you need for the Baby Blocks Quilt Pattern, learn how to put it all together on the next page.
Choose the fabric you will use for this project, fabric with a little stretch such as fleece will be more forgiving.

Fold the material in half to cut out each of the 4 legs and the body, bend the fabric at the bend lines as indicated in the pattern. Sew the UNDER side to the body at the points as indicated in the pattern, be sure not to sew the arc sections as these will make the leg holes. You can also double up this coat by making one in fleece to fit the dog and another a little larger in a nylon material, then sew the two together so that both inside seam works are against each other, then sew in the zipper, neck and leg cuffs. Measure the dog from base of neck to where the til joins to the body (Along the back, the scale the pattern so that the measurement along the fold is the same as the back measurement of the dog.
The neck goes on very similar to the legs, it can actually be cut from the arm of an old fleece sweatshirt and you won't have to sew a seam. HI, I love this pattern but my problem is I need it for a large dog, standard poodle and a Doberman.
After reading all the posts, if we just knew the inches per square, we might be able to determine the scale. Patterns can save a huge amount of both time and processing power - without them we’d be stepping and repeating objects until the cows came home. This has been changed in Illustrator CS6 - there's now a new Pattern Options control panel that allows infinitely more control over both existing and custom patterns. The process of designing and creating a pattern is the same for both earlier versions as well as CS6.
The simplest way to create a pattern is to have the tiles square or rectangular in shape, so that they can butt up against each other without leaving any space or gaps inbetween each other. The second step is to identify a square or rectangular area that will be repeated - and crop everything else out. Once you get to the final stage, when you can manually built the pattern up by copying and placing the repeating elements, you need to get it to a point where you can create a repeating tile. The best reason for using this is that you can always remove the mask later, or work within it to adjust its content. This will completely remove (not just hide) the areas of the pattern outside the repeating tile. If you want to edit the pattern or get it to tile in a different way, you’ll have to go back a few stages and redefine the pattern. You can now adjust the way the tiles butt up against each other (see the options under Tile Type), alter the space between the tiles, dictate how many tiles you want in the pattern and so on. If you examine on the the preset patterns that ship with Illustrator CS6, you’ll see what I mean. So, the get ready for the holidays or for a baby present any time, here is a tutorial on how to make a super easy baby quilt! Pick up the next square from the pile, place it on the right outer edge of the square you just stitched right sides together and stitch down the edge again.
Put aside and repeat with all other five piles.¬†You will end up with 6 strips of 5 squares sewn together. Put it face up and align the long raw edge of the shorter white fabric with the shorter edge of the the quilt top. Install your waling or quilting foot (I have this one) on your machine following your machine’s instructions. Quilt with an even tempo (I have my stitch length set to about 3.5, a little longer than usual) letting the middle seam guide you.

After the first line, I changed my needle position to all the way to the right (0 for me) to get a bigger space between the next quilting lines. Take the longest quilting ruler you have an align on the charm pack seam – try all around before you start squaring off. To make a binding, you stitch them together, fold them wrong sides together aligning the long sides and iron them. The Baby Blocks Quilt will not only help a youngster learn the alphabet, but it will also provide some snuggly warmth on chilly nights. Roll over the Patterns option and you’ll find Basic Graphic patterns, Decorative patterns and Nature patterns. A dialogue window will appear requesting a name for the new pattern - give it a name of your choice.
When we created the random pattern above, there was space around each instance of the tile - because the pattern generator was creating its own squares to render the pattern.
I used a grid to create the squares and just kept creating more on new layers with different fill colors until I was happy with the result. Lay over your very low-loft batting (I use Warm & Natural) and cut to size of your backing and smooth it out. Place the rolled up quilt under your machine foot, so that the rolls are on both sides and you are in the middle of the charm pack section. I am in the middle of working on 2 baby quilts for my grandson on the way but I think Im going to add this one to the list to do too! What I really want to do though is create a seamless, repeating pattern - like the one at the top of the page. Name it, click OK and you’ll see the new swatch appear in the Pattern Swatches palette.
Next to the window (you can click OK now) you’ll see a brand new control panel called Pattern Options. Play with these settings a little more and you’ll see how much control you now have over the pattern. Just align a straight line on the foot, start sewing and measure where your stitch is relative to the straight line. Carefully press seams open, turn around and iron again and square off if needed.¬†Measure your little quilt top. Now carefully lay your quilt top on top of the batting so that you have about 1-2 inches on each side.
Then square the quilt sandwich off nicely by cutting off as much as needed but as little as possible to make it nice and ever. Download the two-page Baby Blocks Quilt Pattern as a PDF to print out the template, which you can use to create a pattern for each letter of the alphabet.
You’ll also notice that around your tile the pattern has repeated itself with reduced opacity so that you can preview what the pattern will look like when applied.
