There are a few books that I go back and reread every few years, but there’s only one book I’ve read at least once every single year since I was nine. Children today are bewildered and sometimes frightened by the nightmarish atmosphere of Alice’s dreams.
As sublibrarian of Christ Church, Carroll used a small room overlooking the deanery garden when the Liddell children played croquet. This is plausible, if a little creepy-sounding, but what does it really tell us about the book? It’ll be no use their putting their heads down and saying, “Come up again, dear!” I shall only look up and say, “Who am I then?
This is a frightening moment, but a profound one for children who are just beginning to think about themselves as individuals, who are separating from their parents and starting to ask themselves, who am I? For some reason Martin Gardner’s The Annotated Alice has always given me an uneasy feeling. It is only because adults—scientists and mathematicians in particular—continue to relish the Alice books that they are ensured immortality. How often he must have watched them, longing to escape from the dark halls of Oxford into the bright flowers, and cool fountains of childhood’s Eden!
For instance, the White Knight who appears close to the end of Through The Looking Glass has been described as an avatar of Dodgson himself, giving his final farewell to Alice before she grows up—or, in the book, before she becomes a queen. Tell me that first, and then, if I like being that person, I’ll come up: if not, I’ll stay down here till I’m somebody else—but, oh dear!” cried Alice, with a sudden burst of tears.
And yet we don’t want to go sticking our heads too deeply into Alice’s world, or we might end up turning her into someone we don’t like.

If you would like us to put up more of these, we will even go on to dig through the pages of wiki and our favourite novels, to create some ourselves. I discovered it through a Disney album of songs from the movie along with a very condensed narrative. For parents who are passing the Alice books onto their children this is an important moment even though young readers may not pay much attention to it.
Ask your students to write about their birthday wish, birthday party, and birthday gifts, etc.
There was also a condensed version of the story with pictures from the movie in the album sleeve. After all, Alice’s Adventures In Wonderland started out as Alice’s Adventures Underground, a hand-written, hand-bound volume illustrated by Dodgson himself, later expanded into the book we know at the suggestion of a friend. I became fascinated by the story of a little girl falling down a rabbit hole and finding herself in a weird alternative world where she was (possibly) the only sane one. I wasn’t a scientist or mathematician, but I got plenty of enjoyment out of Alice’s Adventures In Wonderland. She suddenly becomes uncertain of who she is, thinking she might be Mabel who lives in a “poky little house”, or Ada, whose hair “goes into ringlets”.
I got a copy of Lewis Carrol’s (or Charles Lutwidge Dodgson’s) original book for Christmas and read it immediately, discovering that it was weirder, and more interesting, than Disney’s version could ever be. Chesterton who suggests that Alice should be left alone, that it should never be considered with a critical eye but left for children to enjoy. It’s kind of cute to know that You Are Old, Father William parodies a pretty dull poem by Robert Southey, but does it really make Alice more enjoyable to know what a cucumber frame is, or what mock turtle soup is made from? Gardner uses this as a jumping-off point to defend himself for doing what Chesterton implored editors and critics not to do, but methinks the annotator doth protest too much. I don’t really expect it to capture the book any more than the other versions—for one thing Burton’s film appears to be cramming Wonderland and Alice Through The Looking Glass into a single story—but I expect Burton’s approach to be less about finding a moral or some kind of sense in the story and more about just going with the flow. He argues that certain jokes or references would have been understood only by Dodgson’s friends at Oxford.
Can you really explain the humor of Monty Python  or The Kids In The Hall?  Of course not, and Alice is very much the same way.
