The Eastern practice of yoga has become a modern-day symbol of peace, serenity and well-being in the West.
The mind-body practice is frequently touted for its ability to reduce stress and boost well-being, but it also offers wide-ranging physical health benefits that rival other forms of exercise. Just 20 minutes of Hatha yoga -- an ancient form of the practice that emphasizes physical postures rather than flow or sequences -- can improve cognitive function, boosting focus and working memory.
Yoga's stress-busting powers may come from its ability to lessen the activity of proteins that are known to play a role in inflammation, according to a study published last year from University of California, Los Angeles researchers. A small Norwegian study suggested that yoga's many healthy benefits might come from its ability to alter gene expression in immune cells.
A recent Colorado State University study found that Bikram yoga -- a form of yoga in which a series of 26 postures are performed for 90 minutes in a heated room -- is linked with increased shoulder, lower back and hamstring flexibility, as well as greater deadlift strength and decreased body fat, compared with a control group.
People with mild to moderate hypertension might benefit from a yoga practice, as a study from University of Pennsylvania researchers found that it could help to lower their blood pressure levels. A small 2000 Ball State University study found that practicing Hatha yoga for 15 weeks could significantly increase vital lung capacity, which is the maximum amount of air exhaled after taking a deep breath.
A 2009 Harvard study published in the The Journal of Sexual Medicine showed that yoga could boost arousal, desire, orgasm and general sexual satisfaction for women. A German study published in The Journal of Pain showed that four weeks of practicing Iyengar yoga (a type of Hatha yoga that stresses proper alignment and the use of props) is effective in reducing pain intensity in adults suffering from chronic neck pain. A 2010 Boston University study showed that 12 weeks of yoga could help to reduce anxiety and increase gamma-aminobutyric (GABA) levels in the brain (low levels of GABA have been linked with depression and anxiety disorders).
Researchers at West Virginia University found Iyengar Yoga to be more effective in reducing pain and improving mood than standard medical treatment among those with chronic lower back problems. Adding yoga to a typical diabetes care regimen could result in steady blood sugar levels, according to a 2011 Diabetes Care study. Practicing an Iyengar yoga program designed for older adults was found to improve balance and help prevent falls in women over 65, according to a 2008 Temple University study. Researchers from the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle found an association between a regular yoga practice and decreased weight -- or at least a maintained weight -- among more than 15,000 healthy, middle-aged adults.
As part of a healthy lifestyle, yoga may lower cardiovascular risk factors such as high blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar, according to Harvard Health Publications. This story appears in Issue 83 of our weekly iPad magazine, Huffington, available Friday, Jan. Teachers around the world sent EducationWorld their favorite first-day-of-school activities. If you're looking for fun activities for the opening days of school -- activities that will help you get to know your students and help them get to know you -- check out these suggestions from your colleagues around the world.
After the students sit and I take roll, I ask them to take out a sheet of paper and a pen or pencil for their first test of the school year. On the first day of school, read to students a popular favorite -- The Important Book, by Margaret Wise Brown. I believe students are more interested in school when they have a hand in their own learning. To get communication going between students who aren't necessarily friends, I start the year off with a game of BINGO.
For the entire first day of school, I arrange all the desks in a large circle, with everyone facing the center.
This activity is intended to get high school science students thinking about the scientific process -- what is the issue or problem, what do we know, what do we need to know.
Before you write a letter of recommendation for another person, you should first check the following points to be sure how to write a good letter of recommendation. You should first understand the purpose of the recommendation, whether it is for a job, an academic admission, an academic post, a background check, a volunteer position, or just a personal reference.
You should ask specific questions about the position for which the individual is applying and get a comprehensive job description. You should remember that you are putting your individual reputation on line when you are writing letters of recommendation and recommending other people.
If you know that person but not too very well, you should get complete information about that person.
Letters of recommendation are like other professional communications and they follow the same general guidelines and rules.
If the person you are recommending had any weakness, you need not hide that but you should not be blunt about it.
If you understand the above points about letters of recommendation, your doubts about how to write a good letter of recommendation would vanish. I am writing this letter to recommend Jack Robinson for the position of Production Manager at XYZ Company. Jack had the technical knowledge and expertise to maintain the production running smoothly. Since he was a very good team man and inspired the workers, ABC was able to increase its production. With his technical knowledge, dedication, adaptability, and leadership qualities, Jack would definitely make a great Production Manager for XYZ Company.
When it comes to preparing for finals the tips and tricks to “Ace” your test seem to be limitless.
I know it is going to be hard because you are running on fumes and one more latte is going to get you through, resist.  It is hard for me to admit because I am a passionate coffee consumer, but there is such a thing as too much caffeine.
This is not new news, but take it from me it is the most important thing you will do to prepare.  Lets take it back to kindergarten, make a commitment to a bed time and keep it (7-8hours of sleep a night). Thanksgiving break was a nice rest, but I hope you didn’t eat too much turkey folks because you know what time it is- FINALS WEEK!
Breathe: Of course you cannot completely forget to breathe, but remember to breathe consciously.
In order to think clearly, not have emotional breakdowns, and maintain a healthy physique it is essential that we sleep enough.  Plan ahead so there is no reason to pull an all-nighter. What you put into your body will directly affect your brain function and physical performance.  Instead of popping open a can of Pringles, resort to an avocado.  Those delicious green vegetables are high in omega three fatty acids and promote healthy brain function!
More than 20 million Americans practice yoga, according to the 2012 Yoga in America study, with practitioners spending more than $10 billion a year on yoga-related products and classes. While the scientific research on yoga's health benefits is still young, here's what we know so far about its potential effects on the body. In a University of Illinois study, participants performed significantly better on tests of brain functioning after yoga, as compared to their performance after 20 minutes of vigorous aerobic exercise.

Yoga can also improve women's sex lives by helping them to become more familiar with their own bodies, according to a review of studies published in the Journal of Sex and Marital Therapy, as reported by CNN.
Reuters reported that just three months of yoga in addition to diabetes care resulted in a decrease in body mass index, as well as no increases in blood sugar levels. So here they are -- 14 great activities to help you get to know your new students -- and to help them get to know you. I've credited each activity as accurately as I was able to; in cases where I received the same idea from more than one teacher, I've merged those ideas and credited all.
I explain to them -- in complete seriousness, of course -- that this will be the hardest test of the entire year because they have not prepared in class for the test. It's a wonderful, repetitive book that tells the "important thing" about a variety of things, such as a spoon, an apple, the wind, etc.
I ask my sophomores to write a few paragraphs explaining what they would like to get out of my American government class. You could discuss with the individual about the educational qualification and past experience. Your name, your designation and company name if any, and your address should be on the top right hand corner, followed by the date.
The left hand side after that would have the name, designation and company name, if any, and the address of the recipient.
The letter should open with a formal greeting, either personal or a business greeting, depending on the type of the letter of recommendation. The introduction paragraph should specifically state who you are, how you know that person whom you are recommending, and for what position you are making the recommendation. The body of the letter of recommendation should be specific about the talents, skills, and achievements of the person that you are recommending. Even though you should express your appreciation of the achievements and skills of that person, you should also ensure that there is no undesirable exaggeration in the letter of recommendation. You should be specific in recommending that person to the position which is under consideration.
When you write a letter of recommendation, you should not be too brief, which would convey either the meaning that you do not have enough material to speak about that person or it would make the recipient think that you do not know too much about that person. He was able to motivate the workers under him without too much effort, since he always led by example and automatically inspired them to give their best in their jobs. His suggestions to make improvements in the products to provide more value addition to the customers were highly useful. I am going to go the simpler route and propose a few don’ts.  Things that you should avoid at all costs before your FINAL. It may in fact have the adverse reaction you are going for, causing jitters, nausea, and anxiety.  H20 and your good to go.
Take a bubble bath, turn off electronics 30 minutes before bed, and be confident in your ability to know your stuff. The sad part about this is that our electronics don’t run on solar power (though that is a great idea- somebody patent that). Our minds are constantly dealing with concerns about our future by stimulating upcoming events. And let’s face it, panicked college students are currently scrambling to cram last minute knowledge in their brains, not sleeping enough so they can complete a final paper, and stressing out to meet up with group members to prepare their final presentation, all while drinking large amounts of coffee and energy drinks just to keep themselves going.
Although your professors are just as busy as you are, many times they can answer your questions, as well as give you guidance, prayer, support and hope so that you can successfully finish the semester. Research has shown that two to three hours of sleep is not sufficient for normal brain function. Many times we skip meals, or pick up a fast-food dinner at midnight so we can spend the entire day studying or writing papers. Assign two children to bring in some object each day, such as a shell, that represents what they had fun doing this past summer. After we read the book and discover its repetitive form, we write our own More Important Book.
If they could teach the class themselves, how would they make it more interesting and what would they avoid doing?
If the recommendation letter is for a job, you should focus on the professional qualifications, the personal skills and capabilities, and the attitude and conduct of the person whom you are recommending. If you happen to know the person who would be receiving the recommendation letter very well, you could talk to that person also and get job details. If you think that you do not know too much about that person or if you have even the slightest doubt that the person might not deserve your recommendation, you should decline the request for writing letter of recommendation. You could ask that person to provide you with the resume, degree and other education related certificates, proofs of previous employments, etc.
This summary should inform the recipient about you especially, since the recipient would consider the recommended person favorably, if you are either a superior or a person who is in a position to have studied that person closely for a considerable period.
You should use specific examples and instances, instead of being general or vague while describing that person.
If you try to put that person on a pedestal, it would be quite obvious to most recipients of your letters of recommendations. It states “Before being promoted as Production Supervisor, Jack took pains to attend classes on interpersonal skills and leadership. When you clearly state that the person would be useful in the position, instead of being somewhat vague, the recipient would believe in the authenticity of your letter of recommendation.
You could also invite the recipient to contact you if further details are required about the person you are recommending.
If you wish to know anything more about Jack, kindly feel free to write to me or contact me personally. Keep this in mind and be prepared to be a proactive studier, this is not the time for busy work.
May I suggest green tea, though, because it is loaded with antioxidants and nutrients that have powerful effects on the body, including an increase in brain function. Relying on God for our strength will not only bring you peace, but please God and even develop your relationship with Him during this hectic time! And if all else fails, I always remind myself that there are only a  few permanent decisions we can make in life; luckily re-taking classes, though not ideal, is an option. With stress levels at an all-time high, here are a few ways you can help lower your stress.
Fun Fact: A study that was conducted in 2007 showed that 80% of people tend to hold their breath without realizing it.

But you do need to leave a little time every day to just kick off your shoes and put up your feet for a few minutes. You need to leave enough time to get some shut-eye for at least six to eight hours, so you wake up feeling rested and refreshed. Most of you knew about your term papers, exams and presentations since the first day of class when your professor went over the course syllabus.
Make a list, in order of when the assignments, exams, etc are due, and complete them one at a time until they are all finished. However, your nutrition is important during finals week, and you do not want to wake up on the day of your final exam feeling bloated and nauseous, or starving.
Research has shown that college-aged students spend 8-10 hours per month on social networking sites, which is about 2 hours per week.
We tend to shut the Lord out when we get too “busy” or when we get “stressed” and that is when we need Him most. Examples: Visited Florida this summer, Is an avid waterskier, Has a big brother and little sister, Was born in another country, Lives nearest the school, Learned how to skateboard this summer, Didn't see the movie Titanic, Likes anchovies on pizza, Was born in the same month as you, Has a brother or sister in the same school, Favorite subject is science, Has an ear pierced more than once, Father's name is Jim, Read more than one book this summer, Speaks two languages, Has two pets. Issue texts, group students, and provide the following activity: Invite students to scan the first chapter of their text -- or the Table of Contents, which introduces major areas typically covered in the course.
When you have all these details and when you know how to write a good letter of recommendation, your letter would be specific and thorough.
The first paragraph of the sample letter provided below would give you an idea about the introduction portion.
If that person has made significant contributions or had unique skills, you should expressly point them out. Moreover, this would make it more difficult for the candidate to perform in the new position, even if the recipient had believed your exaggeration, since the expectation would be too high and probably impossible to meet.
I was the direct superior of Jack at ABC and we worked closely during the time Jack worked there. He was able to ensure that quality never got compromised in spite of tough delivery schedules.
He was able to put into practice effectively what he learned in those classes when he became Production Supervisor.
What brings more peace into the heart (besides accepting Jesus as your Savior) than knowing we have others who are suffering just as much, right? Studies actually show that even though green tea contains less caffeine than the average cup of coffee, it serves the perfect amount without causing the “jittery” effects associated with too much caffeine.
The worst feeling is being almost done with an essay, ready to submit an online test, or studying notes, and then-gone!
Set up a little devotional, chapter-reading schedule, or some type of plan to get into the Word everyday.
It will be sure to cut the tension of studying and you can go back to hitting the books with a smile. Below are a few simple steps to improve your finals week outlook, and keep your mind, body and spirit healthy. If you try to overwhelm yourself by doing 4 different projects and papers, and studying on the side, you will confuse the information, if you are even able to remember any of it. Just think of all of the work you can get done if you are not wasting time reading about what your friend ate for lunch.
The test can be as long or short as you wish; make the questions fit the things you would want them to know. After each presentation, mount the plastic bags on each child's "window pane." This makes a great back-to-school bulletin board and provides children with opportunities to talk about their summer.
This is a wonderful and fun way to get to know one another, and the book is read throughout the year. Students walk around the room and get the signature of someone who fits the specific description in each box. As we go around the circle, students try to repeat the information (names and facts) about each of the other students in the circle. When you have all the information with you about the person you are recommending, it would make the process that much easier.
I promise you that you will be more at peace because nothing is better for the soul that being in God’s presence.
We are almost to Christmas Break- constantly remind yourself of this reward once finals are over! Another aspect of Jack that impressed me was his clean habits and maintenance of good health.
I tell them they received their very first 100 in my class if they answered all of the questions correctly!
To make it harder, have students fill every square with a different student's signature and set a time limit. At the end of the "test," I give the answers, and the kids marvel at the discrepancy of their answers. When a student has a BINGO (one name signed per square) give the person a small prize, such as being first in line that day. Then, on a sheet of paper, students write three interesting facts about themselves that are true and one that is false. This is a great way to learn special things about your students and help get them to know one another. Determine what facts or information you as a group would like to know about this topic or issue. An alternative: Set this up as a scavenger hunt with a series of questions, each question with a line beside it.
Students are given a time limit to circle the classroom and find someone who has "been there, done that." That "someone" writes her or his name in the blank space. After about 20 minutes, I stop the discussion and invite each group to share its responses.
