Britain's trade relations with China, celebrated as a key part of a golden era during President Xi Jinping's state visit in October, are likely to be affected if Britons vote to leave the European Union in a referendum on June 23.
Analysts and policy experts contacted by China Daily believe the UK would be at a disadvantage in any trade negotiations in the event of a "leave" vote. Attention here is already focusing on the effects of the referendum's result, which will be known early on June 24, including what it would mean for the so-called golden age heralded by Xi and British Prime Minister David Cameron. Last month, Yao Ling, deputy director of a research center under China's Ministry of Commerce, warned that those investing in Britain as a way into the EU would see the "bridgehead curtailed" if the country exits the EU.
Opinion polls show the two sides neck and neck in the run-up to the vote, although bookmakers are giving odds favoring a vote to remain in the EU.
Already, the campaign by the Remain group, headed by Cameron, and Vote Leave supporters, headed by former London mayor Boris Johnson has become increasingly bitter. Many political observers believe Johnson is using the campaign to boost his chances of taking over from Cameron as leader of the Conservative Party. British politicians linked to the Leave campaign predict that a United Kingdom unencumbered by EU bureaucracy would allow bilateral relations to flourish.
Chinese investment has flooded into Britain over the past decade, and UK exports to China have more than doubled since 2010. Both sides offer competing narratives on what will happen to the Britain and China's "special relationship" should the public vote to leave the EU. The line from the Leave camp is that Britain would greatly benefit from a bilateral free trade agreement with China, something the European Commission has so far been unable to reach. John Zai, founder and CEO of Cocoon Networks, a China-funded private equity company in London, is among the Chinese businessmen who said they believe the idea of Britain leaving the EU is bad. Cocoon's business includes buying equity stakes in European businesses that market their activities through London-based networks to attract international investors. In addition, he adds, the lack of a free flow of resources between Europe and Britain will reduce the UK's competitiveness, which in turn would make British firms less attractive as equity investment targets for Chinese companies. Clifton-Brown points to China and Britain working together to establish London as the biggest trading center outside Beijing for renminbi as an example of the kind of moves Britain would be able to make as a standalone nation.
Andy Clayton, chief executive of LNP China, which helps companies do business with China, said if Britain were to leave the EU, then the country would have to rely on financial services as its most potent leveraging tool. Those who support the Remain campaign, however, fear that China's interest in Britain would cool, as the Chinese seek out an alternate gateway into the European single market.
Philippe Le Corre, a policy analyst in China-Europe relations and a fellow at the Brookings Institution think tank, echoed this sentiment: "The UK market is just not big enough or interesting enough for China.
Fredrik Erixon, an economist and former adviser to China's commerce and finance ministries, said the idea that Britain would be able to leverage market access reforms in China in any trade agreement as a standalone nation is a "naive proposition". Jiang Jiaxi, a senior partner with Jursino Law Group in Beijing, said Chinese businesses would prefer Britain to remain in the EU, to allow them to benefit from using the country as a bridge for their products and services to enter the European market.
Tokyo Governor Yoichi Masuzoe resigned on Wednesday after coming under fire for misuse of tax money, including spending on family trips and artwork, the latest embarrassment as the Japanese capital prepares to host the 2020 Olympics. He is the second governor to quit since Tokyo won the rights to hold the 2020 summer games, though officials say his departure will not have an impact on preparations. Masuzoe, 67, who won election in 2014 with support from the ruling coalition of Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, came under increasingly intense pressure to quit due to his repeated refusals to explain his use of public funds, which included buying comic books for his children. He quit hours before a no-confidence vote was scheduled in the Tokyo assembly, as his position had become untenable.
Officials from Abe's Liberal Democratic Party met with him and called for his resignation, fearing a voter backlash at an Upper House election next month should he stay in office. Masuzoe's refusal to explain his spending fueled anger among Tokyo voters, who have bombarded the government with thousands of complaints. Masuzoe's resignation takes effect on June 21, with an election for his successor likely on either July 31 or August 7.
Masuzoe on Monday pledged to return his salary and begged that the no-confidence vote be postponed until after the Rio Olympics end on August 22, when the Olympic flag will be transferred to Tokyo as host of the next games.
The resignation of Masuzoe's predecessor Naoki Inose slowed preparations for the Olympics, but Tokyo 2020 officials said earlier this week that Masuzoe's woes were having no impact. But planning has been hit by troubles including scrapping plans for the main stadium and plagiarism allegations, forcing them to abandon their original games logo. Tokyo's bid has also come under scrutiny after questions were raised about payments by the bid committee.
An official in the former government of president Cristina Fernandez was arrested on Tuesday as he allegedly tried to hide millions in dollars and other currencies at an Argentine monastery.
A neighbor of the monastery called authorities after seeing a man throwing bags onto the property near Buenos Aires early on Tuesday. They then discovered wads of cash as well as watches in more than 160 packages inside the bags. Security Minister Cristian Ritondo of Buenos Aires province said Lopez was "in a state of shock" when he was arrested and alleged that he tried to bribe police. Dario Kubar, the area's mayor, told reporters earlier on Tuesday that authorities had found more than $7 million at the monastery that is home to nuns devoted to Our Lady of the Rosary of Fatima, which is about 55 km west of the capital, Buenos Aires. Since Fernandez ended her term in December, Macri's administration has promised to root out corruption that has plagued Argentina. Lazaro Baez, a once seemingly untouchable friend of Fernandez and her husband and predecessor, Nestor Kirchner, was arrested earlier this year. Poverty prevented Kami from finishing his studies as a child and achieving his goal of becoming a teacher.
Now 68, the father of six and grandfather of eight goes to school six days a week to complete his studies and escape a lonely home life following the death of his wife.
Walking into the Shree Kala Bhairab higher secondary school and the buzz created by 200 children is a welcome contrast to the hush of the isolated one-room home, with its leaking roof and frequent power cuts, where Kami lives in Syangja district, some 250 km west of Nepal's capital Kathmandu. Kami, whose children have all left his hilltop home, first went to the Kaharay primary school where he learned to read and write with the 7- and 8-year-olds before leaving after finishing grade five with the 11-year-olds. The school scholarship does not stretch to cover food, though, meaning Kami's breakfast of rice with a fermented green vegetable known as 'Gundruk' must sustain him until dinner. The 20 children in his grade 10 class have dubbed Kami 'Baa', which means 'father' in Nepali, but despite his age their elderly classmate joins in all activities, including volleyball in the schoolyard. Kami said he wanted to study until his death, adding he hoped it would encourage others to ignore age obstacles.
A Greek archaeologist believes he has found a fragment of the lost throne of the rulers of Mycenae, famous from ancient myth and the story of the Trojan War. Christofilis Maggidis, who heads excavations at the site in southern Greece, said on Tuesday that the chunk of worked limestone was found two years ago, in a streambed under the imposing citadel. He told a news conference in Athens that the royal throne was among sections of the hilltop palace that collapsed during an earthquake around 1200 BC. Greek Culture Ministry officials have distanced themselves from the identification, citing a separate study that ruled the chunk to be part of a stone basin. But Maggidis said the find was unmistakably made for sitting on, and would have been no use for holding liquids as it is made of porous stone.
Mycenae flourished from the mid-14th to the 12th Century BC and was one of Greece's most significant late Bronze Age centers. Its rulers are among the key figures of Greek myth, caught in a vicious cycle of parricide, incest and dynastic strife. The most famous of all, Agamemnon, led the Greek army that besieged and sacked Troy, according to Homer's epics.
An older, smaller example was found in the Minoan palace of Knossos, on the island of Crete.
Maggidis said other parts of the throne may lie be beneath Mycenae, and hopes to secure a permit to fully excavate the streambed. The precise type of stone used has not been found anywhere else in the palace of Mycenae, although a similar material was used extensively in the citadel's massive defensive walls and in the magnificent beehive tombs where its rulers were buried. Tropical rain forest destruction and relentless hunting have decimated the population of the majestic bird - one of the world's biggest and most powerful - with just hundreds believed to be left in the wild.
A small band of conservationists at a tiny sanctuary on the fringes of Davao, the southern Philippines' biggest city, is trying to ensure their survival by running the world's only breeding program for the eagles and by rehabilitating the wounded.
The foundation estimates there are about 800 of the Philippines' national bird remaining in the wild, though it is impossible to count accurately due to their remote habitats. In more than three decades of trial and error experiments by the foundation that have yet to fully understand the eagles' breeding habits, just 27 have been born in captivity.
The eagles are notoriously hard to pair, with the larger female known to attack and even kill an unwanted suitor in the wild. However, after failing to breed any eagles for nearly three years, recent successes have raised hopes.
Go Phoenix, which was brought into the center after being ensnared in a hunter's trap, and MVP, a shooting victim, were successfully paired in 2013 and have produced two chicks in quick succession, the latest in February. The exceptionally rare moments in nature were filmed from behind glass enclosures, the footage showing chick number 27 breaking out of its shell with a burst of energy and chirping before resting its head on pebbles in a small metal dish. However, a growing problem is space: 35 eagles live in cages of various sizes in the center, which covers just 8 hectares of forest. The centre's ultimate goal is to release the eagles back into the wild, but this has proved even more of a challenge than breeding them.
One of the biggest problems has been the eagles becoming too accustomed to human contact at the center.
Out of 15 eagles from the center that have been released, only one is known to still be alive in the wild, according to Sumaya.
The wife of the gunman who killed 49 people at an Orlando nightclub knew of his plans for the attack and could soon be charged in connection with the deadliest mass shooting in modern US history, a law enforcement source said on Tuesday. The source said that a federal grand jury had been convened and could charge Omar Mateen's wife, Noor Salman, as early as Wednesday.
Mateen, who was shot dead by police after a three-hour standoff at the Pulse club early on Sunday, called 911 during his shooting spree to profess allegiance to various militant Islamist groups. Federal investigators have said he was likely self-radicalized and there was no evidence that he received any instructions or aid from outside groups such as Islamic State. Mateen, who was a security guard, was systematic during his rampage, working his way through the packed club shooting people who were already down. NBC News said Salman told federal agents she tried to talk her husband out of carrying out the attack. Obama denounced Donald Trump for his proposed ban on Muslims entering the United States, joining fellow Democrat Hillary Clinton in portraying the Republican presidential candidate as unfit for the White House. Mateen made 911 calls from the club in which he pledged loyalty to the Islamic State group.
US officials were investigating media reports that Mateen may have been gay but not openly so, and questioning whether that could have driven his attack, according to two people who have been briefed on the investigation and requested anonymity to discuss it.
A former wife of Mateen, Sitora Yusufiy, said her ex-husband had facets of his life that he did not share with his family, such as drinking and going to night clubs.
But the owner of Pulse nightclub, speaking through a representative, denied reports that Mateen had been a regular patron.
Venezuela's president Nicolas Maduro said on Tuesday he was scrapping an emergency measure that had public sector employees working only two days a week. The leader in late April restricted the workweek to just Mondays and Tuesdays to save power in a country hit by electricity shortages. The shortages have worsened hardship in the South American country, where citizens are suffering from shortages of basic supplies. Maduro blames the power shortages on a drought that has dried up Venezuela's hydroelectric dams. The opposition blames him for the economic crisis and is calling for a referendum on removing him from office. The US and Venezuelan governments said on Tuesday they would launch new high-level talks as Caracas struggles with a political and economic crisis. US Secretary of State John Kerry told reporters he would send a top State Department envoy to Caracas "as soon as possible". The announcement came after Kerry met with Venezuela's Foreign Minister Delcy Rodriguez during the general assembly of the Organization of American States. Oil-rich Venezuela has slid into crisis as crude prices have crashed over the past two years. Weeks before a critical NATO summit in Warsaw, three of NATO's biggest military powers said they would each command a battalion across the eastern flank to help deter any show of force such as that deployed by Moscow in Crimea in 2014. In a reminder of Russia's efforts to bolster its military readiness, its armed forces started carrying out spot checks on its units, as well of weapon and equipment depots. Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said the goal of the June 14-22 drill was to ensure the ability of Russian military to "carry out planned activities, including mobilization". NATO's battalions are part of a wider deterrent to be approved at the Warsaw summit on July 8. NATO hopes the complex plan can discourage Russia from orchestrating the kind of campaign used to annex Ukraine's Crimea Peninsula in February 2014. While eastern allies welcome the deployments in NATO's biggest military buildup since the end of the Cold War, they want more support to defend against Russia's powerful arsenal. With a warning last week from a senior US commander that the alliance would have only 72 hours notice of a missile or ground attack, Baltic nations and Poland want a sophisticated anti-missile shield to deter Russia from gaining the upper hand. Turkish police have seized a jewel-encrusted ivory dagger said to have belonged to Libya's late leader Muammer Gadhafi and which was going to be sold for millions of dollars on the black market, Anadolu news agency reported. An alligator dragged a small boy into a lagoon at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida, defeating the father's efforts to wrestle his child away from the reptile, the sheriff's office said on Wednesday.
Sydney's iconic Opera House will receive its biggest upgrade since it was opened 43 years ago, the New South Wales state government announced on Wednesday.
New Zealand's government on Wednesday agreed to pay a record amount to a 41-year-old man who spent more than 20 years in prison for a rape and murder he did not commit.
A morsel of never-before-seen alien rock has been dug up in a limestone quarry in Sweden, where it had lain deeply buried for about 470 million years, scientists said on Tuesday. As satisfying as meeting that challenge was, there are hundreds more to be tackled as US airlines prepare to resume their first regularly scheduled flights to Cuba in five decades. The Department of Transportation on Friday granted American and five other airlines permission to fly to nine Cuban cities. Airlines are racing to figure out how to offer the same streamlined service that is provided out of the US. All flights between the two countries today are charters, many operated by the carriers now seeking approval for scheduled service. Galo Beltran, Cuba country manager for American Airlines, tests a hand-held baggage scanner at Havana's Jose Marti International Airport.
Though Rawabi is still unfinished, its glistening high-rises and shopping centers bring a rare sense of pride and excitement to the territory at a time of growing malaise over a standstill in Mideast peace efforts. Palestinian-American developer Bashar Masri dreamed up Rawabi, which means "hills" in Arabic, back in 2007. Perched on a once desolate hilltop, it's the first Palestinian city being built according to a modern urban design plan.
Mahmoud Khatib came here with his wife and three children from a nearby village because they wanted to live in a modern city. Palestinians see the West Bank, which Israel captured in the 1967 Middle East war, as part of their independent state, along with east Jerusalem and the Gaza Strip. Masri said one of the major hurdles in starting Rawabi was getting approval from Israel for an access road and water supply to the city, which took years. Rawabi now has a yearly renewable permit to use a narrow road that passes through an adjacent 1-kilometer stretch under Israeli control.
Additional water is currently being brought in on tankers, and some people supplement their supply from a nearby village.
A Palestinian family leaves their newly delivered apartment in the West Bank city of Rawabi, north of Ramallah. The seasonal monsoon, which hits the region between June and September, delivers more than 70 percent of India's annual rainfall.
Yet, the rains are hard to predict, and depend on a complex interplay between global atmospheric and oceanic movements that is not yet fully understood. As part of the newly launched $11 million study, scientists from British university will spend a month at sea releasing seven underwater robots from an Indian research ship across a 400-km stretch of water. The torpedo-shaped robots will glide through the water, monitoring its salinity, temperature and current before surfacing and transmitting data to a satellite.
At the same time, scientists from the University of Reading and the Indian government in a related study will take atmospheric measurements at the same time. By comparing the two sets of data, scientists hope to better understand how ocean conditions affect monsoon patterns.
This year's monsoon arrived at the southernmost tip of the subcontinent on June 8 and has been slow in moving north and providing relief amid a devastating drought that has hit wide swathes of central, eastern and northern India. But Cyprus police said on Monday they are investigating an allegation that this happened at a wedding over the weekend. Police say the victim - the groom's 22-year-old brother - was taken to a hospital but wasn't seriously hurt and that his family filed a complaint. A family member - speaking on condition of anonymity because the investigation is continuing - said the priest had initially gestured with a raised hand for the slapping to cease, then punched the brother in the chest and face when the warning went unheeded.
The family member told The Associated Press that the wedding unraveled during the ceremony's Dance of Isaiah, when the priest, holding the Gospel, led the couple around the altar three times. Bishop of Paphos Georgios backed the priest, whom he hailed as one of the best clerics in his Diocese.
The bishop said he had instructed priests to interrupt any ceremony where family or guests didn't demonstrate the appropriate respect. The Philippines confirmed on Tuesday the execution of a Canadian who had been held hostage by the al-Qaida-linked Abu Sayyaf Islamist militant group on a remote southern island with three other people since September 2015. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said in Toronto on Monday that it appeared the second execution of a Canadian hostage by Abu Sayyaf in recent months had taken place. A Philippines military spokesman said earlier a severed head had been found near a Catholic cathedral on a remote southern island late on Monday. Hall was taken captive by the militants with three others from an upscale resort on Samal island, hundreds of miles east of Jolo. Trudeau told reporters that "Canada holds the terrorist group who took Mr Hall hostage fully responsible for this coldblooded and senseless murder". He said Sunday's attack on a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida, and the killing of Hall "serve as devastating reminders for all of us, the vicious acts of hatred and violence cannot be tolerated in any form". Abu Sayyaf, based in the south of the mainly Roman Catholic Philippines, is known for kidnapping, beheadings and extortion. Security is precarious in the southern Philippines despite a 2014 peace pact between the government and the largest Muslim rebel group that ended 45 years of conflict. In Manila, President-elect Rodrigo Duterte's national security adviser said Duterte's new government, which takes charge on June 30, would "take a stronger action against lawlessness in the south". Abu Sayyaf had initially demanded 1 billion pesos ($21.6 million) each for the detainees, but it lowered the ransom to 300 million pesos each early this year.
Intelligence reports indicated Hall had been beheaded 10 minutes after a 3 pm deadline lapsed in the mountains outside Jolo's Patikul town.
Some bungling boating by a group of landlubber drug smugglers led to New Zealand's largest ever haul of methamphetamine, with their fumbling efforts arousing the suspicion of locals, police said Tuesday. The 494 kilogram haul, with a street value of $347 million, is the largest ever in New Zealand, eclipsing in a single swoop the entire amount of ice seized in the South Pacific nation last year (334 kilograms). Police said locals found an abandoned boat at remote 90 Mile Beach on Sunday and also reported a group of men had been acting suspiciously in the area in recent weeks. They said the men, whose nationalities were not given, had been unsuccessfully trying to launch boats off the beach, then offering locals large amounts of cash to help them. When police went to recover the boat, a vehicle used by the group drove past and was stopped after a brief chase. A short time later, a campervan driven by a third man, aged 19, was stopped and a search found multiple suitcases containing zip-lock bags full of drugs totaling 448kg. Police also found a handheld GPS device in the first vehicle which had coordinates leading to some sand dunes, where officers on Monday dug up a further 46 kg of drugs. Police said they were working with customs to determine where the methamphetamine came from.
The three men appeared in court Tuesday charged with importing and possessing class A drugs for supply. Crowds flocked to vigils around the world on Monday in shock at the shooting of dozens of Florida clubgoers in the deadliest attack on the gay communities. In Orlando, mourners piled bouquets around a makeshift memorial, and people broke down in tears and held their hands to their faces while passing through the growing collection of flowers, candles and signs about a kilometer from the site of the massacre. Meanwhile, thousands lined the streets in the central London district of Soho, long a hub for the gay community in the United Kingdom, bursting into chants of "we're here, we're queer, we will not live in fear" under rainbow flags.
A policeman at the scene estimated the crowd at between 5,000 and 7,000 strong, as other rallies took place in cities from Berlin to Bangkok.
The crowd in London released 49 brightly colored balloons into the sky for each one of the victims of the massacre. In Australia, the landmark Sydney Harbour Bridge was lit with the rainbow colors of the gay community flag as hundreds gathered to condemn terror and homophobia.
And in the Netherlands, the first country to legalize same-sex marriage, hundreds gathered at Amsterdam's "Homomonument", composed of three pink triangles, designed to commemorate gay men and women who have been persecuted because of their sexuality.
The Eiffel Tower was lit up in rainbow colors and the colors of the US flag in solidarity, as the city still reels from November jihadist attacks in which 130 people were killed. The gunman who launched the worst terror attack on US soil since Sept 11, 2001 attacks was self-radicalized by online extremist propaganda, officials said, amid reports he was a club regular.
US investigators believe that Omar Mateen was a "lone wolf" inspired by Islamist propaganda to carry out what President Barack Obama dubbed "an act of terror and an act of hate". In a twist to the story, some people said Mateen, 29, had been a regular at the club, media reported.

Another club regular, Kevin West, told the Los Angeles Times that Mateen messaged him on and off for a year using a gay chat app.
A friend of Amanda Alvear, a victim of the mass shooting at a nightclub in Orlando, Florida, holds up her photo at a memorial service on Monday. From all over the world, people come to Florida's theme parks to enjoy themselves and to escape from reality, if just for a few hours.
But around 2 am on Sunday, police say, Omar Mateen entered the Pulse club, a gay venue, with a rifle and pistol and opened fire. Not long before the Pulse incident, 22-year-old singer Christina Grimmie, a former contestant on NBC's The Voice, was shot dead while signing autographs. Laura Hakami of Norton, England, said her family had saved 3 years for their dream vacation to the Magic Kingdom. Tammy Harris hugs her daughter, Anabelle, 4, as they prepare to enter Disney World's Magic Kingdom at Lake Buena Vista, Florida, on Monday. Pakistan is considering buying used F-16 fighter jets from Jordan, media reported on Tuesday, after a plan to buy eight of the aircraft from the United States fell through because of the refusal of the US Congress to finance the deal. The EU's top court on Tuesday backed United Kingdom's right to limit child benefits to European migrants, a hot-button issue in the country's referendum on its future in the European Union next week. Greek police on Tuesday cleared two more improvised migrant camps near its border with Macedonia, moving occupants to state-run facilities, officials said. A riot and fire erupted late on Monday at a prison in a Mexico City suburb, prompting authorities to send in hundreds of police and firefighters to restore order. Italy's controversial former prime minister Silvio Berlusconi underwent cardiac surgery after a heart attack that his doctor said could have killed the 79-year-old.
The operation lasted for four hours and Berlusconi will be in intensive care for two days after that. A woman has been killed by a crocodile in Myanmar's delta region but her remains have not been recovered, media reported on Tuesday. President Francois Hollande held a top-level security meeting after the overnight attack, which took place as France was on high alert for the Euro 2016 football championships. Sources close to the investigation identified the suspect, who was killed in a police operation, as Larossi Abballa, 25.
He stabbed the policeman repeatedly outside his home in Magnanville, a northwestern suburb of Paris, before holing up inside with the policeman's partner and the couple's 3-year-old son. Loud detonations were heard at the scene as elite RAID police moved in following failed negotiations with the attacker. Officers found the woman's body after they stormed the house, and her attacker was killed during the assault, Interior Ministry spokesman Pierre-Henry Brandet said.
The couple's toddler son was "in shock but unharmed", a prosecutor added, saying the boy was receiving medical attention.
Sources close to the inquiry, speaking on condition of anonymity, said he claimed allegiance to IS group while talking to officers. If it is confirmed IS group was behind the murders, it would be the first militant strike on French soil since the government imposed a state of emergency after multiple attacks on Paris in November that killed 130 people. Abballa, the sources said, had been sentenced in 2013 to a three-year term, six months of which were suspended, for "criminal association with the aim of preparing terrorist acts", in a trial with seven other defendants. Hollande met at the Elysee presidential palace early on Tuesday with Prime Minister Manuel Valls, Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve and Justice Minister Jean-Jacques Urvoas. In a statement earlier, Hollande said an "odious act" had been committed and vowed to shed all light on the murders.
The operation in Magnanville saw police move in quickly to evacuate residents from the neighborhood and block off roads, an AFP journalist saw. But the negotiations were "unsuccessful" and authorities decided to launch an assault around midnight, he added.
The killing came after a gunman claiming to be acting in the name of IS shot dead 49 people at a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida on Sunday in the worst mass shooting in US history.
The Indonesian capital's reputation as one of the most congested cities is typically not an advantage with investors. The ride-hailing apps that are now part of daily life from New York to New Delhi and London are usually used to summon cars. In hindsight, the Go-Jek mobile app for hailing rides on motorcycles, to dodge and weave through traffic, was a no-brainer. Makarim said Jakarta's carmageddon had arrived at a "pain point" of huge unmet demand for a solution. Florian Hoppe, a partner at consulting company Bain who specializes in technology, said Go-Jek's approach is "fairly unique" but fits the situation in Jakarta and other Indonesian cities where service businesses are hobbled by transportation problems.
Like elsewhere, ride hailing apps are drawing an angry backlash from taxi drivers as their incomes drop.
Go-Jek said it has more than 200,000 drivers around Indonesia but the pain for taxis seems most acute in Jakarta, where all the ride hailing services are battling fiercely for customers, pushing fares to rock bottom.
Since a Go-Jek trip within the city costs only about 12,000 rupiah (90 cents) outside of peak hours, the company is burning through its investment cash because in Jakarta the fares are lower than what it pays drivers. Yet the apps have proven so useful to people in a city where officials estimate congestion causes losses of $3 billion a year that attempts to ban them on the basis of claims of unfair competition have failed.
Singapore on Monday crushed and burned almost eight metric tons of ivory confiscated over two years to try to deter smugglers.
An aid group said 4,000 more people have fled the Islamic State-held city of Fallujah in Iraq after government forces retook a key road to the IS stronghold over the weekend. Rayani Air, Malaysia's first Islamic-compliant airline, has been shut down, regulators said on Monday, months after it was suspended from flying for breaching aviation regulations.
Oscar Pistorius is a "broken" man who should be hospitalised with depression, a South African court heard on Monday, as the Paralympic athlete faced a return to jail for murdering his girlfriend three years ago. At least 11 people were killed in India's eastern state of Bihar due to thunderstorm and rains, officials said on Monday.
US anti-terror strategy came under fresh scrutiny after a gunman previously cleared of jihadist ties launched a hate-fueled rampage in a Florida gay club that left 50 dead. As the worst mass shooting in the country's modern history erupted on Sunday, Orlando police blasted their way into the Pulse nightspot and shot the attacker dead. The assault triggered grief but also defiance in the gay and lesbian community, and more than 100,000 marched in a planned Los Angeles Gay Pride parade.
Family and friends of victims trapped in the nightclub waited anxiously on Monday to find out whether their loved ones were among the 50 people killed and 53 wounded in shooting.
They waited for news outside a center in Orlando where authorities were gathering details about people still missing. Maribel Mejia, 42, got good news about one friend, who sought cover during the shooting and escaped. The FBI said that 29-year-old Omar Mateen had previously been investigated - but cleared - for ties to a US suicide bomber.
Special Agent Ronald Hopper also said Mateen was reported to have made a 911 call pledging allegiance to the Islamic State group shortly before the massacre.
Meanwhile, the IS-linked news agency Amaq said without providing evidence that one of its fighters carried out the attack. But the group, which has previously been a conduit for IS statements, cited only "a source", leading experts to doubt the claim.
Mateen was born to Afghan parents in New York in 1986 and lived in Port St Lucie, Florida, about a two-hour drive from Orlando.
The suspect's ex-wife, who divorced him in 2011, told reporters he had been violently abusive to her but was not especially religious.
But the FBI's Hopper told reporters Mateen's behavior had raised red flags well before Sunday's attack.
In 2013 he was investigated by the bureau after making inflammatory comments to co-workers that suggested terrorist ties.
President Xi Jinping on Monday called his US counterpart Barack Obama to offer condolences over the deadly shooting in Orlando, Florida.
On behalf of the Chinese government and the Chinese people, Xi expressed deep sympathy and sincere condolences to Obama, the US government and the US people. At least 50 people were killed and 53 others wounded early on Sunday in a mass shooting at a popular gay nightclub in Orlando. Presidential candidates Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton adjusted their presidential politicking on Sunday, offering prayers and support to the victims.
Trump has proposed temporarily barring all foreign Muslims from entering the country and has advocated using water-boarding and other harsh interrogation methods.
Mina Justice was sound asleep when she received the first text from her son, Eddie Justice, who was in the gay nightclub when a gunman opened fire, leaving 50 dead. On Monday, the City of Orlando released names and ages of 23 victims and Eddie Justice's name was on the list. Many have heard of the grandeur of the annual Great Wildebeest Migration in East Africa, while every year around early June, a similar massive migration of cows and dairy farmers takes place in New Zealand, in which thousands of households join the traffic with their herds, in trucks or on foot, to move to new properties.
As the hallmark of the Kiwi farming culture, the so-called "Gypsy Day" often falls on May 31 or June 1 as farms change hands and sharemilkers take up new contracts from the end of May. A farm owner introduces management skills to visitors in New Zealand's South Island on May 26, 2016.
Apart from lease changes, the cows generally are entering the dry-up period during which they commonly stop lactating for 60 days until delivery. The Hamish and Mike Ryan farm, which is located around 120 km south of the tourist city of Queenstown, is a partner and shareholder of New Zealand's largest meat processor Silver Fern Farms.
The dry-up period is a phenomenon of nature, but an almost unified milking period is a result of technical intervention. The point of RankBrain is to take the term a user enters into Google search and interpret what the searcher actually means.

RankBrain is not only learning about how machine language or artificial intelligence (AI) works, or about trying to find ways to manipulate as many ranking factors as much as possible. After you have created your piece of content on whichever topic it needs to be about, it is crucial to ensure that you study the analytics of it afterwards.
As with all of the other Google updates that have been done over the years, RankBrain focuses on providing the best possible quality for end users of Google – in other words, the searchers of information. An oversimplification, maybe, but a great way of looking at the social sphere online and gaining some perspective on the true scope of its worth. Here we have two well informed, educated authorities on the topic of social media giving us their two competing theories about its place in modern society.
I remember reading a news article last year about how a study found that people who post inspiration quotes on their social media page were more likely to be unintelligent. Whatever the original intentions of that flawed study, there is no denying that experts quotes are insanely popular on social media.
Being such a fantastic form of engagement, and a way to increase your visibility on social platforms, how can you start to really take advantage of it? Occasionally you will come across a great quote from one of your favorite blogs, or a video interview, and you should feel free to share those. Two other great quote sites are Quotery and Brainy Quote, both of which offer reliable original sources, and an extensive database. Visual quotes are even more shareable than text ones, and as a rule you should try and create more of them. If not, you can turn to generators like Recite (for simple graphics with a watermark), or Pixteller (for slightly more advanced).
The first is great for straight quotes that are placed against basic backgrounds like a piece of paper and pen. If you want to start making different kinds of graphics that use visual quotes (like infographics), check out Canva. Have you seen those posts floating around that show Albert Einstein quoting Lil Wayne lyrics, or George Washington telling you not to believe everything you see on the internet?
Fake Quotes From Famous People is a great Tumblr page that sadly hasn’t been updated in a year. John Oliver launched his own fake quotes site called Definitely Real Quotes in a bid to shame politicians during an increasingly hostile (and ridiculous) US presidential caucus. Finally, I would say my favorite method of getting expert quotes to use on social media is also the most beneficial to you: through expert interviews. You are probably always looking for new content, and by interviewing an expert you will get plenty. Do you have any tips for using expert quotes to engage on social media with new and current followers? So if you’re falsely reporting your competitors, don’t be surprised when Google starts ignoring you! A couple months ago, Google told us that they keep track of users who send really good spam reports.
Recently, Gary Illyes seems to have confirmed that the opposite is true as well: users who repeatedly submit false reports in an effort to attack their competitors are more likely to be ignored. The tool will score your mobile friendliness, mobile speed, and desktop speed out of 100 and provide specific tips for how to improve each of them.
What would you do with outdated content or content that has no perceivable benefits to your site? Whether SEO is dead or tales of its death are only exaggerated has been debated for years now. On Cre8asiteforums, Kim has an interesting thread about the difference between thinking you know what customers want and actually asking them what they want.
Webmasters and UX professionals might think they know what a customer wants – but their solution is not always the one that the customer would prefer. Location, location, location Location settings are often overlooked after the initial campaign setup.
They also allow us to target by demographics, which lets us select the household income tier we want to target. To properly leverage location settings for e-commerce businesses, you need to first think about your products and your audience. I prefer to air on the side of more reach to start because customers can come from a wide variety of regions and until you have definitive data to back up decisions, it’s best to avoid excluding too much based on hunches. After finding our best converting locations, we went in and added bid modifiers to make sure we were bidding higher in those locations. Location-based businesses such as amusement parks, schools, car dealerships and car repair shops have their own unique ways of targeting location.
To get more out of radius targeting it is a great idea to have a bullseye-like pattern around the target area. After completing the radius targeting, you can implement bid modifiers in increasing increments starting with the lowest bid modifier at the furthest distance and working up to the largest bid modifier the closer you get to your location. With this arrangement, you will bid more on the customers closest to your business location, allowing you to have a higher chance of procuring the customer. Although having a high organic CTR is crucial, having positive website engagement metrics is even more critical.
One important note before we get started: Please don't focus too much on the absolute bounce rate and time on site figures discussed in this article. In 2011, Google announced a new option that allowed us to block domains from appearing in our search results. Although that feature is no longer with us, we know it was based on whether (and how quickly) you bounced back. Does Bounce Rate Impact Organic Position?OK, let's get the official Google line out of the way. Well, it seems like for this particular keyword niche, as long as you have a low bounce rate (below 76 percent) then you're more likely to show up in positions 1 through 4. Image via Fox.But if there's no free beer to be had, most (if not all) of that traffic will bounce right back. So I believe Google is measuring dwell time (which is proportional to bounce rate) to check whether websites getting high CTRs actually deserve it and if the clicks are indeed valid, or if it's just click bait. One other question this discussion obviously raises is: do higher rankings cause higher engagement rates, as opposed to the other way around?
Well, unless you work at Google (and even then!) you may never know all the secrets of Google's algorithm. Regardless, improving user engagement metrics, like bounce rate, will still have its own benefits. Does time on site impact organic position? Now let's look at time on site, another metric we can measure that is proportional to dwell time. Interestingly, you get no additional points after you cross a minimum threshold of time on site. If you can get people really excited about clicking on something, that excitement typically carries through to a purchase or sign-up. On average across all industries, site-wide conversion rate for a website is around 2 percent (the donkeys), while conversion rates for the top 10 percent of websites (the unicorns) get 11 percent and above.
Remember, conversion rates are a very important success metric because you get the most value (you actually captured leads, sold your product, got people to sign up for your newsletter, or visitors did whatever else it was you wanted them to do), which means the user found what they were looking for.
How do you turn conversion rate donkeys into unicorns?Image via Fox.The way you don't get there is by making little changes. Ask yourself: Why in the world are 98 percent of the people who see your offer not taking you up on it? Image via Fox.What can you offer that will resonate enough that +10 percent of people would be excited about signing up for it or buying it on the spot? For example, for my own company, five years ago our primary offer was to sign up for a trial of our software. Then I had an epiphany: Why don't I just grade people's accounts without having them do a trial of our PPC management software, and just give them a report card?
Image via Fox.Rather, your goal is to bias them so in the future they'll do a search for your product.
Facebook and many other vendors have conducted lift studies that prove that Facebook ads impact clicks and conversions you'll get from paid and organic search. Interest-Based Targeting to reach people who are likely to search for the things you're selling. Demographic Targeting to reach people who are likely to search for the stuff you're selling, maybe within the next month. Behavioral Targeting to reach the people who buy stuff that is related to the stuff you're selling.
You want to make sure the people who gave you a look to see what your site was about never forget you so that subsequent searches always go your way. Remarketing greatly impacts engagement metrics like dwell time, conversion rate, and time on site because people are more familiar with you, which means they're more likely to be engaged with you for longer. These are huge numbers for a minimal investment (display ads average around $10 for 1,000 views).
It's your job to convert or squeeze as much money as you can from people who are already in the market for what you sell. I believe that terrible engagement metrics will lead to a death spiral where your site gets less clicks, less leads, less sales, and even lower rankings. Obviously better CTRs, higher engagement rates, and improved conversion rates lead to more leads and sales. I would prioritize click-through rate and conversion rate (or engagement) optimization at the very top of the most impactful on-page-SEO efforts. So use the tactics and strategies from this post to diagnose your engagement rates, and then start optimizing them!

Instead of formulating content focused on just 1 keyword phrase, it will now be beneficial to create content that focuses on the main keyword phrase as well as phrases related to the original keyword.
You can either browse the full list online or download them to a spreadsheet to review later. On the bottom of the first page of search results, there are normally other phrases related to your original search. However, RankBrain has changed this in that it is now more important to focus on creating high quality content that incorporates a range of keyword phrases as naturally as possible instead. The reason for this is that in some cases, Google could offer searchers and opportunity to provide feedback about your website content. It is imperative that we developers and content creators be focused on the same end goals that Google is focusing on – namely, providing the best quality content in search results for searchers.
Senior Technical Writer Paula Allen and I for a candid conversation on the latest changes to the SERP and what it means for SEO. Unsurprisingly, these claims were false, but I still found it funny and shared the article to all of my friends.
But when you are actually going hunting for quotes, it is good to have a couple of sources on hand.
That is where I found the two quotes posted at the beginning of this article, as a matter of fact.
The latter has a Quote Of The Day feature that gives you a beautiful visual graphic with random quotes. Luckily they aren’t that hard to make, especially if you have a little knowhow on tools like Photoshop or GIMP. I tend to alternate between the two in order to get two different types of visual quote that attract two different kind of posters. Having absolutely zero graphic design talent or knowledge myself, I am a huge fan of this graphics generator. It is a collection of fake quotes attributed to the spiritual leader, and some of them can actually be kind of funny. You will also build yourself as an authority and source for the original quote, which you can use to promote the content you have just published. Turns out that they have policies in place for identifying bogus reports and the users who frequently submit them. Nearly one in five spam reports are false or misleading – so of course Google has plenty of experience with separating the wheat from the chaff.
You don’t require Search Console to use it, but you might have to give your email address out to receive a full report. But if that content has gained links and seems to rank well, should you really get rid of it?
This user on SEO Chat is approaching the question from a new angle though – the relationship between agencies and clients. If you need something, there will usually be an attentive sales person on hand to help you.
It’s easy to set up targeting, but we forget about leveraging these settings to work for us.
These allow us to use Places of interest such as airports, universities and other central commercial areas. We looked at the Google Analytics report by location and found which areas sell the most products. While it may not be a direct ranking signal that's even part of Google's core algorithm, I believe CTR is an indirect signal that definitely impacts rank. What value is there in getting hundreds or thousands of people to click on your brilliant headlines if those people don't stick around for more than a few seconds? If you clicked on a result and then returned to the SERP from the website within a few seconds, Google's blocked sites feature would appear. However, we can measure three engagement metrics that are proportional to and directionally equivalent to dwell time: bounce rate, time on site, and conversion rate. However, if your bounce rate is higher (above 78 percent), then you're much less likely to show up in those coveted top 4 positions. Looking at that graph, it leads me to believe that it's no accident — but in fact algorithmic in nature. Think of it more like a "check" on click-through rates within the existing algorithm that hasn't been quantified. For example, I could promise you the digital equivalent of free beer and have a ridiculously high click-through rate.
If engagement is weak on average, however, then you're more likely to be in positions 7 or lower. These metrics help Google figure out whether users ultimately got what they were looking for. While absolute conversion rates vary wildly by industry, unicorns always outperform donkeys by 3–5x regardless of industry. It was somewhat complicated, people had to learn how to use the software, and not everyone made it through the process. That increased my conversion and engagement rates by 10x, and the gains persisted over time. If it's an unbranded search, having been exposed to your marketing materials in the past, they'll be more likely to click on and choose you now. You can target Facebook ads at people who will celebrate an anniversary within the next 30 days.
Because you know these people will be searching for keywords relating to flowers and jewelry soon. So use remarketing to increase brand familiarity and increase user engagement metrics, while simultaneously turning the people who bounced off your site in the past into leads now.
They would need to lean on a "domain-level engagement score" to fall back on in the event that more granular data wasn't available. But I also believe that improvement in these metrics will lead to better organic search rankings, creating a virtuous cycle of even more clicks and conversions. But if I'm right, you'll not only get more conversions, but you'll get better rankings, which will lead to more conversions and even better rankings. The battery can be drained to levels where it will not have enough energy to crank your car. And solutions need to be found rapidly - airlines must start flights within three months of being granted a route by the US government. The terminal currently used by US-bound charter flights has a tiny departure lobby and overflowing baggage belts. The US Department of Transportation said on Friday that six airlines have been selected for routes to nine Cuban cities other than Havana. And scientists say they may also become even more erratic with increasing climate change and even air pollution. Some 150 relatives of inmates, some in tears, stood near the prison awaiting for news while police officers cordoned off the area. Previous hauls were returned to the originating country, donated to museums or kept for education. I am one of them," she said, adding a call to keep assault weapons out of the hands of "terrorists or other violent criminals". In fact, it has become more important than ever to pay attention to RankBrain and its effects on SEO. For example, when compiling a basic post on goal setting in previous SEO efforts, you would have had to focus purely on that phrase. This will help you find numerous phrases pertaining to goals that can be used throughout your post or article.
He's the brains behind the MozCast, the Google Algorithm Weather Report, that chronicles changes to the SERP as they happen.
But the article went on to explain that they are trying to provide each Metro station with its own short name (between 13 and 19 characters, depending on the importance of the station) that is easy to scan when hurrying passengers are racing to their destination. I am an avid quotes sharer, and so are many of them, and we all had a good laugh at our own expense.
The second puts the quote against a more visually stimulating backdrop, like the type you might see on Tumblr, or even PostSecret. New TLDs still feel like an accessory to many people – a vest instead of a shirt, so to speak. Users on WebmasterWorld found that, sometimes, Google’s products were to blame for their poor scores.
Maintaining a healthy relationship with a client is not always easy – has it become more difficult with the times? You can target specific locations too, which makes this a very accurate and powerful targeting tool.
And if you improve your click-through rate, you should see your rankings and conversions improve. Today I'll share some data that shows the relationship between engagement rates (such as bounce rate and time on site) and rankings. We know Google measures dwell time, or how much time a visitor actually spends on a page before returning to the SERPs. What I believe is that, in some Rube Goldbergian way, bounce rate does in fact (indirectly) impact rankings. I think you've passed Google's test — passing it by even more doesn't result in any additional bonus points.
If you want to increase your conversion rates by 3x to 5x, then small, incremental changes of 2 or 3 percent usually won't cut it. There is much more leverage in changing the offer versus, say, the image on an existing offer. Brand awareness creates a bias in people's minds which has a ridiculously huge impact on user engagement signals. That's how you can start biasing them to get them to have happy thoughts about your business, increasing the likelihood that they'll click on you, but more importantly, convert.
You can use Custom Affinity Audiences to target people who have searched on keywords you're interested in, but didn't click through to your site (or you can specify certain categories related to your business). If you aren't using remarketing, essentially you're investing a ton of time and money into your SEO and marketing efforts just to get people to visit one time. Google does something conceptually similar in AdWords by having both account-level and keyword-level Quality Scores. He’s also presenting his Guide To The Changing Google SERPs Search Marketing Expo (SMX) Advanced this month. That makes sense to me, and it reminded me of how important the same principle is for website information architecture.Too often I see the top nav of a site use words that just don't make any sense to me as a visitor. It's also similar to how many believe that Google considers links pointing to your domain and also individual pages on your site when computing organic rankings (a moment of silence for our beloved Google PageRank Toolbar). Google is good at fighting click fraud on ad networks, so you can expect them to apply those same learnings to fight organic search click fraud. Half the technology sites I go to list Products, Solutions, etc., and God bless me if I can figure out what the technology does. Do visitors stay on one page for a short while and then leave or do they spend a while perusing the rest of your site? It is not only essential to focus on actual rankings – you also need to focus on what takes place after visitors have clicked on your page or content. Some of them have long names in the top nav, such as the site that had a choice of "Why [Really Long Product Name]" which not only isn't scannable, but I suspect is answering a question that most visitors aren't asking. I saw another site that liked to mix up short names with long names: Products, Why Company Name, Blog, Get a Demo-it really doesn't work.
One word navigation names work best if you can make that happen, because the spaces between the words act as the spaces between the choices.
If have to have multiple words, you need plenty of space in between the choices so that the eye can distinguish the breaks between them. But when you use too many multi-word choices, you have to make the font even smaller to provide the required spacing, which defeats the ability to scan all by itself. So, when designing your site's information architecture, don't settle for the words that insiders think are the ones that best describe their choices.
