Most of us only consciously notice things we actually have or are relevant to use, and don’t notice consciously the things we say we want. Rather than saying you can’t do this or that, start saying, “I WILL do this”, or “I CHOOSE to do this.” Say you want things, and say that you should do things. We like to talk about other people, and for some people it can be kinda fun to laugh at someone’s misfortune. Many times we don’t embrace life, nor do we seize the moment, because we get weighed down by trivialities and insecurities. Every day we’re still alive is a blessing, and you should feel blessed each morning you wake up. There is literally nothing worse when we want to be more positive than hanging around friends who bring us down with their negative thinking.
The world is not always a nice place, but to help you develop a positive mental attitude, you should focus on absorbing positive information only. NLP recognises the ways that our thoughts and feelings (neuro), combined with our use of language (linguistic) affect our behaviour (programming). After all there are millions of happy, successful people in the world who have never heard of NLP, and their information and processing of the world is already quite effective. For instance when I tell a room of people to “Try to be here by 6am tomorrow” instead of telling them, “You must be here by 6am tomorrow” the number of people turning up early is likely to reduce.
For instance, if somebody says a team member is ‘unreliable’, you won’t know exactly what that means unless you know exactly what ‘unreliable’ means to the person who said it, in that context. If we allow our brain the chance to take part in our success, by asking ourselves the right questions, in the right mindset, then amazing ideas can begin to flow. But it is possible to play a trick on the mind and start thinking about the things we want as if we already have them! Well, have you ever had the experience of looking for a particular make of car (or book, or jacket, or breed of dog) and not being able to find one anywhere? Keep a journal, and each night before you go to sleep, write down all the things that you were grateful for during the day. Enjoy your breakfast fully, pay attention to your kids when they are talking, and focus on only what needs to be accomplished in the moment. If so, it’s clear to say that your language is far too negative, and it demonstrates that you approach life with the wrong kind of attitude.
We want to go the movies but if our friend cancels, rather than go by ourselves and look like a loner, we stay in, heat up a TV dinner and feel blue. What about the time your partner’s football team lost and he almost kicked the television in? By hanging out with couples who argue constantly, or friends who believe that the world is going to end in 2020, you’ll start to feel miserable yourself.


They think about the way things used to be, and they always ask the question: “What if …?”. This could mean that you listen to a positive CD in your car, or it could mean that you read a positive-thinking book. At the end of the day, NLP is just a formula for explaining how humans process information and act in order to achieve results – whether good or bad. For instance: “What causes you to say they are unreliable” Or “In what ways do you find them unreliable?”.
Learning only happens, and progress only occurs, when we become aware that ‘I can’t’ is a decision not to do something. Avoid watching the news, listening to news radio or checking social media websites until your morning is well under way.
Rather than attack life with gusto and realise your potential, you’re instead afraid of taking chances and letting yourself go. Rather than focusing on our own life, we’re instead jealous and bitter about someone else’s.
And if we want to go out but can’t find a dress that looks right, we get frustrated and hide under our duvet.
Now, we know that loving yourself is not exactly easy if you already hate yourself, but you have to develop the idea that you are beautiful, worthy and awesome. Remember, though, that you shouldn’t focus on the things you don’t have but would like to have, and instead be grateful for what you do have. Because it’s human nature to mimic the folk we hang around with, it’s time that you started to find some shiny happy chums who believe that life is beautiful.
To ensure that you’re no longer one of these past-living people, you need to hold a toast to the future and make a list of all the things you want to achieve. Swap the newspaper for a pep talk, and change your music-listening habits, and you’ll be surprised at the results. As you work on that task, do not think about the next item on your list, or on the existence of the list at all. Better than going out and attracting attention for a dress that just doesn’t look right, right?
Stop letting so-called obstacles hold you back and take control of your destiny and happiness.
Because knowledge really is power, arming yourself with lots of it will make you feel more powerful and wizened and you really will start to feel more positive. By thinking forward, and by imagining the kind of awesome life that awaits you, you will be motivated to work towards a series of goals. Only the fact that you’ve gone from wanting to having, and your brain is doing a new pattern match.

It’s time to let them go and replace with them more positive emotions, such as happiness and empathy. The next time a friend asks you a difficult question about history, rather than frown you’ll be able to shoot off the right answer.
By applying this principle to other things you would like to have in your life, your brain will start to think as if you already have them – and encourage you to alter your behaviour so that you are more likely to achieve those rewards or outcomes.
