THE MEDICAL PROFESSION WOULD have you believe that diabetes is not reversible and only controlling your blood sugar with drugs or insulin will protect you from organ damage and death. The diabetes epidemic is accelerating along with the obesity epidemic, and what you are not hearing about is another way to treat it. Type 2 diabetes, or what was once called adult onset diabetes, is increasing worldwide and now affects nearly 100 million people — and over 20 million Americans.
We are seeing increasing rates of Type 2 diabetes, especially in children, which has increased over 1,000 percent in the last decade and was unknown before this generation. In a report in The New England Journal of Medicine, Walter Willett, MD, PhD, and his colleagues from the Harvard School of Public Health demonstrated that 91 percent of all Type 2 diabetes cases could be prevented through improvements lifestyle and diet. Here, I want to review in detail this new way of thinking about diabetes and outline the tests I recommend to identify problems with blood sugar. When your diet is full of empty calories, an abundance of quickly absorbed sugars and carbohydrates (bread, pasta, rice, potatoes, etc.), the body slowly becomes resistant to the effects of insulin and needs more to do the same job of keeping your blood sugar even. Insulin resistance and the metabolic syndrome associated with it is often accompanied by increasing central obesity, fatigue after meals, sugar cravings, high triglycerides, low HDL, high blood pressure, problems with blood clotting, as well as increased inflammation.
These clues can often be picked up decades before anyone ever gets diabetes — and may help you prevent diabetes entirely. If you have a family history of obesity (especially around the belly), diabetes, early heart disease, or even dementia you are even more prone to this problem. Most people know about the common complications of diabetes such as heart attacks, strokes, amputations, blindness, kidney failure, and nerve damage. Diabetes and pre-diabetes ARE reversible by aggressively changing lifestyle, nutritional support, and occasionally medications. In fact many people with pre-diabetes never get diabetes, but they are at severe risk just the same.
We were highly adapted to a nutrient-dense, low-sugar, high-fiber diet rich in omega-3 fats. Now, in just one generation, they are nearly all obese and 80 percent have diabetes by the time they are 30 years old!
New science shows that it’s possible, through an aggressive approach of lifestyle, nutritional support, and occasionally medications.
It is important to diagnose Type 2 diabetes early, but it is often not diagnosed until very late.
In fact, all doctors should aggressively diagnose pre-diabetes decades before diabetes occurs, and before any damage is done to your body. Unfortunately, there is a continuum of risk from slightly abnormal insulin and blood sugar to full blown diabetes.
In a recent study, anyone with a fasting blood sugar of over 87 was at increased risk of diabetes. Most doctors are not concerned until the blood sugar is over 110 — or worse, over 126, which is diabetes.
Insulin Glucose Challenge Test – This should be done with a 2-hour glucose challenge, 75 grams measuring fasting, 1- and 2-hour blood sugar AND insulin. Hemoglobin A1C Test – This is an important measure of glycated hemoglobin, which can be an early indicator of sugar problems. NMR Lipid Profile – This test is slightly different from the one above as it identifies the size of your cholesterol particles. High Sensitivity C-Reactive Protein Test – This is a measure of inflammation, one of the classic conditions that is both the cause and result of insulin resistance and diabetes.
Fibrinogen Test – This measures your risk of clotting, which can cause heart attacks and strokes. Mark Hyman MD is the Medical Director at Cleveland Clinic’s Center for Functional Medicine, the Founder of The UltraWellness Center, and a ten-time #1 New York Times Bestselling author. Diabetes mellitus is a disorder wherein there occurs a deficiency in the production of insulin hormone resulting in the increase of blood sugar.

Type 2 diabetes may be caused due to the increase in blood pressure and blood triglyceride levels.
Insulin resistance in type 2 can be seen in conditions like obesity, pregnancy, infections and stress.
The history of the patient to find any of the hereditary aspects of the disease is carefully analyzed at the first stage. The complications that correspond the diabetic condition include diabetic hyperglycemic hyperosmolar coma and diabetic ketoacidosis. Keeping the body weight under control and maintaining a healthy lifestyle might prevent type 2 diabetes.
However, a regular check up of blood glucose level and taking right doses of medicine of insulin can reduce its severity.

The medications that are out on the market now for diabetes often increase the basal levels of insulin secretion all of the time, which is why diabetics are prone to hypoglycemia. New types of diabetes medications that only increase the insulin levels as the glucose levels rise have been in demand for quite some time, but that is difficult to create due to the very specific response from the pancreas.
If you are unfamiliar with Dextromethorphan, also known as DXM, you might wan to know that NMDA receptors become triggered by the substance.
Through the specific theory and findings from the mice study, researchers were able to then test the theory through a double-blinded randomized placebo-controlled study for humans.
For diabetic patients, this can be seen as a breakthrough, because it can give researchers and pharmaceutical companies another way to look at diabetes treatment. But medication and insulin can actually increase your risk of getting a heart attack or dying.
Insulin resistance, when the body becomes resistant to the effects of insulin, is primarily what causes diabetes. The high insulin leads to an appetite that is out of control, and increasing weight gain around the belly. Some may even know that it increases your risk of dementia and cancers and can cause impotence. Therefore, I recommend early testing with anyone who has a family history of Type 2 diabetes, central abdominal weight gain or abnormal cholesterol. Your blood sugar should be less than 80 fasting and never rise above 110 or 120 after one to two hours.
It measures sugars and proteins combining into glycated proteins called AGEs (advanced glycation end products), like the crust on bread, or the crispy top on creme brule.
An HDL or good cholesterol level under 60 and triglycerides over 100 should make you suspicious of insulin resistance. With insulin resistance or Type 2 diabetes, you develop small LDL and HDL cholesterol particles. I have seen this hundreds of times in my patients and there is no reason you can’t achieve the same thing if you apply these principles. Diabetes mellitus type-2 is one such disease relating to high blood glucose due to insulin resistance.
Consumption of fatty foods and alcohol intake at a higher level would also result in such disease. Insulin treatment with a syringe of insulin pump and oral medicines decrease the levels of blood sugar. Long term complications include coronary artery disease, diabetic neuropathy, hypertension, skin infections, stroke, peripheral vascular disease and atherosclerosis. Low alcohol consumption and quit smoking would ideally be suggested as the best preventive measures. Identify your HbA1c test score, mean blood and glucose level to know if your blood glucose is in the optimum level.

Dextromethorphan is known as DXM, it is one of the ingredients that young people use to get high, which is why a lot of cough suppressants now require you to have a valid photo identification to purchase. The antidiabetic medications such as Metformin can be thought of as just a general medication that cannot specifically react to glucose level fluctuations, meaning the secretions will go up whether your body needs that to happen or not. In order to get these new types of medications on the market, researchers are having to look at ways the pancreas can be altered, especially the pancreatic islet cells. NMDA receptors are found within the pancreatic islet cells, and researchers were looking for how one affects the other, and this can help determine how the DXM targets the NMDA receptors.
20 men who had type 2 diabetes participated in this study, all of whom were taking various medications to help with their diabetes. Instead of having to take antidiabetes medication that quite often results in hypoglycemia and gaps in blood sugar readings, diabetics might soon be able to take a dose of DXM to regulate blood sugar levels and increase tolerance to glucose. Your insulin should be less than 5 fasting and should never rise above 30 after one to two hours. These create inflammation and oxidative stress throughout the body, and promote heart disease and dementia and accelerating aging. They are much more dangerous than larger particles and lead to increased risk of atherosclerosis or heart disease. In fact, anyone with a high C-reactive protein has a 1,700 percent increased risk of getting diabetes. This is entirely due to sugar and carbohydrates in our diet that cause fatty liver, liver damage, and even cirrhosis.
Food products which contains zinc are split peas, egg yolk, beef liver, lima beans, almonds, walnuts and buckwheat.

While products like DXM might be somewhat abusable among the population, this ingredient actually has been shown to help control blood sugar levels in type 2 diabetics. There is a lot about the pancreas that is not known and the functions of the various parts of the pancreas are also still fuzzy, which is why getting these specific medications on the market has not been easy. For this research study, mice were used to test the various theories of how DXM and NMDA receptors worked. What the results concluded was the same thing that was seen in the mice, which was that the DXM helped increase the glucose-stimulated insulin secretions and the glucose tolerance, but did not produce any hypoglycemic reactions. This is especially good for brittle diabetics, since they are the group that can go from extremely high to extremely low glucose levels within a matter of hours.
I recommend this test for everyone over 50, and for anyone with any risk of insulin resistance, even children.
Type 2 diabetes is popularly called adult-onset diabetes or non-insulin- dependent diabetes.
Apart from medications reducing obesity and following a diabetic food plan is also suggested for such disease.
Washing the feet and checking blisters or infection on the feet would be some of the methods of prevention.
The researchers ended up removing these receptors in the mice, which caused the glucose-stimulated insulin secretion to rise, while the basal insulin secretion stayed the same. Brittle diabetics are also the group that is more likely to experience hypoglycemia, so if there is a way to target the receptors and control blood sugar without the negative effects then it can help save lives.
The researchers then tested whether or not the mice without the NMDA receptors would react the same way to the DXM, both those mice did not get the same type of reaction. For the researchers, this meant that it was fairly obvious that the DXM worked through the NMDA receptors and not through other tissues or through other means in the nervous system.
In some cases emotional disturbance might cause increase in blood pressure leading to the disease ultimately.
