Diabetes is a chronic disease that occurs either when the pancreas does not produce enough insulin or when the body cannot effectively use the insulin it produces. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that 350 million people currently suffer from diabetes worldwide. Treatment of diabetes includes measures to lower blood glucose levels and other risk factors that damage blood vessels. Weight control, diet, exercise and other health-promoting lifestyle choices can prevent type 2 diabetes from occuring in the first place.
The online journal, BioMed Central, has recently published a nationwide survey on diabetes in the United States that includes a detailed state-by-state breakdown. I appreciate Diabetes Forecast’s effort at tackling the great carbohydrate debates in: “Are Carbs the Enemy?” (March 2011). With the increasing conversation about pre-diabetes and type 2 diabetes, you’ve likely heard the terms “insulin resistance” and its “opposite insulin sensitivity.” Another term that’s entered our lexicon with the epidemics of obesity and type 2 diabetes is “metabolic syndrome,” a group of symptoms, which, at its core, is insulin resistance. The Health News and Reviews section addresses current health- and lifestyle issues as they are discussed in the press and respective publications. Almost anyone who has ever gone on a diet or bought into a weight loss program knows that lasting success is the real challenge.
You hear a lot about Diabetes because so many Americans suffer from it, 29.1 million to be exact. Here’s an explanation on what Diabetes is, how it affects your body and what you can do to reduce your chances of joining the 29.1 million.
Get lots of exercise and lose weight – doing half an hour of moderate exercise a day can help lower blood glucose levels by boosting your sensitivity to insulin. An 8-year old boy, a known diabetic (type 1 DM), has been brought to emergency room in a state of coma.
The child is suffering from diabetic ketoacidosis, the commonest complication of Type 1 diabetes mellitus. In the conditions of non utilization of glucose, fats are alternatively oxidized to provide energy. Similarly fatty acid release from adipose tissue (adipolysis) is an action of glucagon and catecholamines, insulin inhibits this action also.
In diabetic ketoacidosis, Insulin promotes glucose uptake through GLUT4 transporters (figure) in skeletal, cardiac muscle and adipose tissue.
Figure- Insulin increases the number of GLUT4 transporters present on the surface of adipose, cardiac and skeletal muscle cells, as a result glucose update is increased in these cells. Please help Biochemistry for Medics by "CLICKING ON THE ADVERTISEMENTS" every time you visit us.

Type 1 diabetes is characterized by deficient insulin production, often developed at a young age. While type 1 diabetes patients require daily insulin injections, type 2 diabetics can benefit from other forms of treatment as well, such as weight management and blood pressure control.
The results are not surprising and confirm more or less what researchers have known for quite some time: Diabetes continues to be on the rise everywhere in America, and the situation is the worst in the southern parts of the country. You measure your blood sugar, take your diabetes medications, drag yourself out of bed early to walk around your neighborhood and take the extra time to pack your lunch.
The Eating Lighter – Eating Smarter program offers easy modifications of many popular meal choices. Having lunch or dinner out should be a pleasurable experience, unspoiled by guilt and regret. Firstly we avoid educating ourselves on prevention and secondly we avoid talking about the cost of treating Diabetes. This is the type of Diabetes that prevention methods can help and this is why it’s so important to raise awareness of Diabetes prevention and Diabetes symptoms.
Exercise also helps control your weight, blood pressure and cholesterol, all factors to consider when trying to prevent the onset of type II Diabetes. Following tips 1-4 can help you control your blood pressure although it’s also best to try and limit the stress in your life where possible. Fruity odor of breath is due to the presence of acetone, one of the ketone bodies (the other two are acetoacetate and beta hydroxy butyrate). The extra Acetyl co A produced by fatty acid oxidation is diverted to the pathway of ketogenesis. Insulin promotes glycogenesis, it is an anabolic hormone, and it prevents all the catabolic processes including glycogenolysis.
It also promotes glucose utilization by stimulating the enzymes of pathways of glucose utilization. The causes of  type 1 diabetes are not yet fully understood and the disease is neither preventable nor curable at this point in time. If kept untreated, the risk of progressing from gestational diabetes to type 2 diabetes is real.
And with so much to learn, you read everything you can find about diabetes and listen to everyone’s well-meaning advice and personal stories. It’s National Nutrition Month with the theme – “Eat Right with Color” (it’s hard to create a color palate without fruits and vegetables!). I also appreciate the dual challenges, for people with prediabetes and diabetes, of glucose control and healthy eating.

Just knowing how much Diabetes meds cost you might deter you from eating all those sugary and fatty snacks! Blood sugar (glucose) levels in the blood and cells are controlled by a hormone called insulin. This will help you control your weight as well as controlling your blood pressure and triglycerides. In some high risk type II cases with high blood pressure daily medication may be needed to lower the blood pressure. Over time, it can lead to serious damage to many of the body’s systems, including nerves and blood vessels. Do you suffer from diabetes, have serious blood sugar and insulin imbalances, monitor your blood sugar all the time, or have elevated cholesterol, blood pressure, and triglyceride levels? A change in diet and lifestyle together with medication can greatly reduce your chances of Diabetes escalating to dangerous levels. I suggest keeping away from ready meals and processed foods, these tend to have more sugar and fat than when you cook from fresh. However, even if you are diagnosed, the above advice can stop the disease from progressing. High blood glucose is due to non utilization or extra synthesis of glucose in the presence of reversed insulin to glucagon ratio. Formerly only known to occur in adults, type 2 diabetes is now also on the rise in children and adolescents.
But what might not be so obvious is that a lot of what you read and hear is just plain wrong. If it doesn’t work properly then blood sugar (glucose) levels rise high and become dangerous. Doing half an hour of exercise a day doesn’t’ mean having to pay for a gym membership or organized classes.
Try to eat a balanced healthy diet with lots of fruit, vegetables and fiber – introduce lots of whole-grains too as these are known to help reduce Diabetes risk ad help blood sugar levels. Going for half hour brisk walk, taking the stairs instead of the elevator etc count as moderate exercise and are all ways you can fit exercise into your existing routine.
