COPD is a group of illnesses that involve the restriction of air flow and it stands for Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease.
The COPDGene® Study is one of the largest studies ever to investigate the underlying genetic factors of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease or COPD.
Diabetes educator Elaine Blackwood explains many people with COPD limited their activities or avoid things they used to enjoy because they become short of breath more easily. When COPD is severe, shortness of breath and other symptoms can get in the way of doing even the most basic tasks, such as doing light housework, taking a walk, and even bathing and getting dressed. COPD develops slowly, and can worsen over time, so be sure to report any symptoms you might have to your doctor or healthcare provider as soon as possible, no matter how mild they may seem.
Diabetes Management & Supplies offers accredited diabetes education services that can make managing diabetes and other conditions an easier task.
For more on the study, read the full article Dual-pronged approach to diabetes and COPD needed. Diabetes educator Elaine Blackwood urges parents and caregivers to be on alert because children and adults can be prone to the spikes and crashes of diabetes.
Once your blood glucose rises, eat a small snack if your next planned meal is more than half an hour away. Diabetes Management & Supplies offers insulin pump training and accredited diabetes education services.
Even if blood sugar levels are consistently in safe ranges, a spike to levels greater than 250 may signal a serious condition for adults and children with type 1 diabetes. Participants at a recent American Diabetes Association meeting were warned that, while stable in recent years, the number of U.S. DKA may be the first symptom of undiagnosed diabetes, but it may also occur in people with a long-standing diagnosis as a result of a variety of causes, such as intercurrent illness (one disease you get while battling another) or poor compliance with insulin therapy. DKA is diagnosed with blood and urine tests; it is distinguished from other, rarer forms of ketoacidosis by the presence of high blood sugar levels.
Keeping tight control on blood sugar levels will reduce the risk of developing complications like heart, kidney, eye and nerve problems. Diabetes is just one chronic disease, but it represents a huge threat to the physical and economic vitality of our state and carries a huge price tag which includes shortened lifespan for sufferers and skyrocketing healthcare spending. Unlike many diseases, diabetes carries the ability to spark or worsen other diseases like heart disease and stroke. The American Association of Diabetes Educators is just one organization committed to improving the lives of people living with diabetes. Ongoing changes in the way insurance companies cover the costs of durable medical equipment (DME) may affect how insulin pump patients get diabetes testing supplies. Diabetes Management & Supplies is aware of these changes, and our staff stands ready to assist our insulin pump customers in making sure they continue to get the most appropriate strips for their insulin pumps. Healthy eating and nutritional support are valuable assets for people living with diabetes. In a recent cooking demo, Chef Wright prepared a Breakfast Burrito while DMS dietician Ellen Smith, RD, LDN, explained the nutritional value of the meal and how participants can incorporate the dish in a healthy eating plan.
Chef Wright, the DMS marketing and sales director, uses an insulin pump to help control his blood sugar and has lived with type 1 diabetes for more than 20 years.

The American Diabetes Association (ADA) and Diabetes Management & Supplies (DMS) advocate portion control strategies for people living with any form of diabetes and for those trying to prevent diabetes. The ADA suggest “creating your plate” as an easy way to get started with managing blood glucose levels.
The DMS “I’m in Control” diabetes education program details meal planning and the Plate Method in its Healthy Eating section. Elaine Blackwood, DMS certified diabetes educator, appreciates the visual appeal of the Plate Method and will often use paper plates and markers to help others plan, plot and visualize meals. For more on summer picnic and cook-out ideas, check out “Get Ready for Summer Picnics and Barbecues” from the American Diabetes Association. Elaine Blackwood, Diabetes Management & Supplies certified diabetes educator advises that you plan ahead and keep blood sugar and portion control in mind.
Chef John Wright’s collection contains a Shrimp Appetizer that can also be served over rice or pasta and used as a side dish.
Blackwood also recommends bringing your own bottled water in case your hosts only have soda or alcohol. If you are doing the meal-planning, remember that heart healthy items like salmon and tuna are also great for throwing on the grill. If healthy grill items are not available, Blackwood says you can always eat the hamburger (mustard and relish are free foods), but without the bun.
Researchers looked at people with both diabetes and COPD and are suggesting treating the conditions together for better outcomes. A primary goal of the study is to find out why some smokers will develop COPD and others will not. Lowering blood sugar levels is a common goal for children and adults with diabetes, but extreme lows can bring dangerous complications. Call your healthcare provider if it doesn’t go down after two checks, or if symptoms get worse.
This could be three to four glucose tablets or ? cup (4 oz) of fruit juice or regular soda (not diet).
Elaine Blackwood, Diabetes Management & Supplies diabetes educator, urges an increased understanding of diabetic ketoacidosis and what should be done when it is encountered. It is more common in adults and children with type 1 diabetes, but it can occur in those with type 2 diabetes under certain circumstances. Treatment involves intravenous fluids to correct dehydration, insulin to suppress the production of ketone bodies, treatment for any underlying causes such as infections, and close observation to prevent and identify complications.
It measures how much glucose is stuck to a protein (called hemoglobin) inside the red blood cells. Certain risk factors increase damage to the large blood vessels in the heart, brain, legs and feet. Whether you are working to control your diabetes or would like to prevent diabetes, the motivation may be the same: ensuring a long, healthy life. It also provides an umbrella for catastrophic complications including blindness, renal failure and limb amputations. AADE believes that behavior change can be most effectively achieved using the AADE7 Self-Care Behaviors™ framework. This diabetes education intervention has received the AADE’s accreditation as well as the Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval, the highest ranking possible, making it one of a select few national diabetes companies with this unique distinction.

Getting and using the correct testing strip, in particular, is important to the operation of insulin pumps. If you are having difficulty navigating these changes or if you have questions about the use of your pump or its accessories, call our Insulin Pump Info Line at 1-888-738-7929. Chef John Wright of Diabetes Management & Supplies uses both his culinary knowledge and his personal experience with type 1 diabetes to provide meal-planning support and cooking demonstrations.
The breakfast dish features two very lean protein sources  – shrimp and eggs – as well as vitamin-rich bell peppers and whole wheat tortillas.
For more information on specific nutrition needs or to enroll in group or individual sessions, call our Education Department at 1-888-738-7929. While it is important to make wise food choices that encourage good blood sugar control, it is also important to practice portion control and add foods in the right combinations. Make half of your plate non-starchy vegetables, a fourth of your plate protein and a fourth of your plate starch. For more information on specific exercise needs or to enroll in group or individual sessions, call our Education Department at 1-888-738-7929. People living with diabetes may think that they have to miss out on, but there’s no reason to stay home and miss the fun.
Served alone, the shrimp appetizer doesn’t contain any carbohydrates and can be a great substitute on the chip-and-dip table with the other crunchy snacks.
Each extreme carries symptoms that people with diabetes and family members should learn and be able to recognize as they develop. DKA results from a shortage of insulin; in response the body switches to burning fatty acids and producing acidic ketone bodies that can cause dangerous complications. The seven self-care behaviors are healthy eating, being active, monitoring, taking medication, problem solving, reducing risks and healthy coping.
The needed strips may still be covered by insurance, but the new rules may assign a higher copay to these supplies or change where and how strips can be purchased. These changes are often in response to the availability of lower cost alternatives, such as generic or over-the-counter drugs, or a change in the pricing contract with manufacturers. From holiday cook-outs to weekend barbecues, the fun time summertime gives people living with diabetes several opportunities to be social and healthy butterflies. Loading up on low-carb items and fruits and veggies will help control the blood-sugar spikes that can often occur after a cook-out or barbecue.
It’s a quick, easy way to eliminate a lot of fat and calories, but it keeps the favor and variety high.
Following the plate method helps to ensure that you eat a well-balanced meal containing all the necessary food groups and stay within recommended carbohydrate intake. Fresh fruit is a summertime treat and ending with something like Strawberries and Yogurt Sauce is a good way to keep things fresh and lite.
