Nighttime hypoglycemia and night sweats go hand and hand but there are a few things you can do to stabilize your blood sugar while you sleep and in turn help reduce your chances of experiencing that uncomfortable sweating at night that can be caused by changes in blood sugar levels. There are a number of reasons why a person with either type 1 or type 2 diabetes might experience low blood sugar at night that leads to sweating while sleeping. Since nighttime hypoglycemia is relatively common in both type 1 and type 2 diabetes, and one of the most common side effects of hypoglycemia is sweating, it’s no wonder that night sweats and diabetes are often linked. For some people, sweating while sleeping is simply a result of using too many blankets or keeping the bedroom too hot at night.
For others, sleep hyperhidrosis can be a symptom of a much more serious health condition – like diabetes.
I have been eating different and excising for weeks now and I stopped taking Januvia and went back on the Metformin. Thursday night I had eaten dinner (a small steak, corn on the cob, a slice of garlic bread, and a side Caesar salad…and a little while later I had a Skinny Cow chocolate bar). Difference was that I was pretty late eating because I went to the WW meeting and was pretty much starving. I was also afraid that here I am on the eff-ing toilet doing what I was doing and I was going to pass out and then the paramedics would need to not only come into my filthy house, but they would find me on the floor of the bathroom in such a state that omg, I can’t even imagine it.
And we realized that my husband needs to learn how to test my sugar, in case of another emergency. At this point, I felt better, so I finished up what I was doing and went to the living room to wait for the paramedics.
I didn’t take a ride in the ambulance, but did this open my eyes and scared the crap out of me!! I also got some glucose tablets to keep in my purse and at home, I got some hard candy for both also, and I got some diabetic friendly bars to keep in my purse. I am feeling 100% better now, and seriously have had an eye opener on how scary Diabetes can be.
One of those reactions is sweating, either as traditional night sweats or cold sweats at night.


Luckily there are some effective nights sweats treatments to help you avoid diabetic night sweats.
Exercising before bed can lower blood sugar levels, as can eating smaller meals, eating at different times or altering the contents of meals.
Don’t eat too heavy or too much before bed though as this can disrupt sleep also; choose a light, healthy snack that won’t impact blood sugars too much, so you don’t have a drop in the middle of the night. Drinking too much alcohol can cause blood sugar levels to drop during the night when you are sleeping. If diabetes runs in your family, if you’ve noticed increased thirst or urination or if you’ve experienced any vision changes, seek the guidance of your health care professional. The food culprits are refined and white flour carbohydrates, sugars, sodas, fruit drinks and nutrient-depleted food. Hyperactivity, irritability, grumpiness, depression and inattention may also result. It can go into so many crevasses - some happy, some not, especially when it is not fueled properly. My A1-C was ridiculous at like 15 or so and the dr said that my sugar was in the 500’s. Seriously, it was worse than when I had a panic attack and thought I was having a heart attack.
If you have type 1 or type 2 diabetes, it’s likely that you have suffered from night sweats on at least one occasion, possibly accompanied by other disturbing sensations like weakness, heart palpitations, dizziness, hunger or anxiety. In people without diabetes, the pancreas responds by producing less insulin and everything stays in balance.
Sweating can also be accompanied by trembling, hunger, weakness or fatigue and a sense of nervousness or anxiety.


This was after I had already eaten a bit of candy so I don’t know how low my sugar actually was. I also bought a cheap meter at CVS and will leave that one at work once I get my new meter from the supply company. For individuals with diabetes, the pancreas either doesn’t produce enough insulin or produces no insulin at all, requiring individuals to inject insulin to control blood sugar levels.
These symptoms are important to note as it is your body’s way of signaling you that you need to restore your blood sugar to a normal level. However, there is greater incidence today of high blood sugar, insulin resistance and diabetes than ever before. They do not provide the quality of fuel needed to sustain energy for the body or the brain. We can choose good food and good nutritional supplements to turn a low blood sugar condition around, or prevent it altogether. However, injecting too much insulin or changing the quantities or timing of meals can throw off blood sugar levels.
If you do notice large dips in your blood sugar, consult with your doctor to either adjust insulin levels or switch the type of insulin you’re using from long-acting to fast-acting.
