I want to empower your health with the steps that freed my life of chronic pain and medications. Before we get started with tips to balance your blood sugar, I want to cover some basic blood sugar terms that I will be using in this discussion. Insulin – the pancreas secretes insulin, a hormone that shuttles glucose from the blood into body cells. Insulin resistance – When we consume a large amount of refined carbs with very little fat and protein, our blood sugar spikes very high and the pancreas frantically overcompensates with insulin release. When we consume healthy sources of carbohydrates with plenty of good fat and protein, the glucose from the meal enters our blood in a slowly, and the pancreas responds by secreting a measured amount of insulin. Since blood sugar imbalances perpetuate inflammation, stable blood sugar reduces inflammation and helps balance hormones.
Whenever we eat a source of carbohydrate, it should be accompanied by a quality source of fat.
When it comes to choosing fats, opt to skip anything that requires a factory to produce it. When we skip breakfast, the body increases production of stress hormones and starts to break down muscle (not fat – muscle!) to use for energy. A breakfast with 40 grams of protein, according Chris Kresser in Your Personal Paleo Code, has a stabilizing effect on blood sugar throughout the rest of the day.
Quality fats slows down the absorption of glucose into the blood stream, providing satiation and satisfaction. See how the three macronutrients – fat, protein and carbohydrate – works together nicely? While going gluten free didn’t bring significant results, eliminating allA grains from my diet changed my life. The consumption of grains perpetuates carbohydrate malabsorption and blood sugar imbalances. Instead of obtaining carbohydrates from grains, opt for healthy carbs from fresh, whole fruits and root vegetables.A These carbs do not perpetuate inflammation or intestinal damage like grains. T-Tapp is a unique physical therapy approach to fitness that I use as the main part of my own exercise routine. Chronic cardio activities like running, Zumba and spinning keep your heart rate constantly elevated, spike stress hormones and create damaging free radicals.
With that said, the only way to truly understand your blood sugar levels is to use a glucose meter.
I purchased the glucose meter recommended in his post, the RelionUltima, and I take my blood sugar readings A one day each week or so (4-6 times on that day). I would like some examples of different meals to try to balance my glucose levels naturally.
I just had a cup of Greek Yogurt with 3 TBSP of milled flax seed with berries and a splash of almond milk for breakfast. Thanks for sharing, I have always had problems with my weight and my blood sugar has been chronically low for a long time. Diabetes type 1 is an autoimmune disease and it’s not exclusively (or mainly) linked to insulin resistance. I would also like to point out that there is a link between diabetes type 1 and celiac disease (they are both autoimmune diseases) so if you have one of those it’s a good idea to be tested for the other.
I am trained to guide you through dietary changes, supplemental additions and lifestyle adaptations that will help you achieve the balance of energy output, recovery, rest and relaxation that is best suited to your individual needs. Do you feel awake and alert soon after waking in the morning without the need for something to stimulate you? Do you have steady concentration throughout the day or do your energy levels dip after lunch? As a Nutritional Therapist, I am trained to guide and coach you through dietary changes, supplemental additions and lifestyle adaptations to help you achieve good levels of energy, rest and relaxation to meet your individual needs. If you find yourself ‘hangry’ every day, always cravings carbs and sugar, a bit moody, unable to shed any weight and just darn TIRED then chances are you are having issues with your good ol’ blood sugar. I know balancing blood sugar doesn’t exactly seem like the sexiest or funnest topic BUT having a happy balanced stable blood sugar is pretty foundational for lasting awesome-ness. Plus if we ignore this key area of health then we are also putting ourselves at risk for some pretty serious health consequences. The consequence of dysfunctional blood sugar will forever be marked in my mind after one gruesome incident. I had no idea the human body could do that to itself but it in this case of Type 1 diabetes and whole host of other health issues, it can. OR people can get way too low in their blood sugar levels, hypoglycemic, which also messes with the hormone insulin. So what we want to do is ensure that our cells welcome insulin with open arms, we want to make sure you have a steady slow release of insulin and glucose in our blood.
And this is not just to prevent potential diabetes but as you can imagine having too much glucose swimming around your body doesn’t do your waistline any favours, or your mood, digestion or food cravings.
I know for me that sorting out my blood sugar has been a massive part of my healing journey. Ditch the processed yogurt, cereal bars and anything with ingredients in that sound like they belong in a test tube.
After vegetables, which are a health no brainer, these are the two foods that will help you thrive!
When we wake up our blood sugar is pretty low so if you then carry on with just a coffee your body can start to panic.
Ideally, if you know your blood sugar or adrenals are an issue aiming for a high protein and fat breakfast is the best option. Things like eggs and salmon or organic bacon, organic yogurt and seeds and berries, mettle, green smoothie or some homemade muffin even is better than nothing.
I add cinnamon to lots of things to help it taste sweeter but also research shows it can help blood sugars to boot!
These lemon coconut creams are the perfect blood balancing snack but there are loads more tasty snack recipes here or in The Sweet Treat Collection. I talk about this a lot in my Flourish Community but we need to flip how we build our meals. Chances are you will be craving caffeine if your blood sugar is wobbly but alas caffeine can cause a further imbalance. Some research suggests that caffeinated coffee can reduce your insulin sensitivity (more needs to be done to confirm this) so starting your day with a cup of coffee before you eat anything is not a good plan. Intermittent fasting is basically allowing around 12- 24 hours between meals, so you don’t increase blood sugar during this time.

So it is time to say goodbye to the crazy ass rollercoaster of energy, hunger, bad moods and belly fat.
And if you want some expert help then I run a whole 21-day sugar challenge to help you Beat the Sweet and live one naturally sweet LIFE! The body, however, can become resistant to using the insulin if there are certain factors occurring, in particular excess fat. Keeping glucose sugar levels balanced also helps promote weight loss as having low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) will trigger binge eating, which causes the rebound effect of high blood sugar or glucose.
With a few tricks up your sleeve, you can easily control your glucose levels and avoid more serious health problems. Besides my individual sessions I have started a six-month mentoring program that is helping people become ready on many levels for the transformation that we are undergoing. Here find my musings on food, advice on changing your diet to get the most from it and deliciously healthy recipes. This overcompensation of insulin eventually causes insulin resistance, which leadsA to Type 2 Diabetes if poor dietary practices are continued.
This is a form of stored sugar that is broken down to stabilize low blood sugar levels between meals and during the night.
It is normal to have a spike in blood sugar after a meal, but chronically high blood sugar causes severe health issues. Glycogen, the sugar stored in the liver, is responsible for raising blood sugar in-between meals and should prevent hypoglycemia. Fat slows down the absorption of glucose into the bloodstream and prevents sugar highs and sugar crashes. First, we replace the fat in our meal with sugar and refined carbohydrate, because removing fat from food also removes flavor and moisture. A stint on a low-fat diet, be it months or years, causes the bile to become thick and stagnant.
Corn oil, soybean oil, safflower oil, sunflower oil and margarine are all highly processed and highly inflammatory. Intermittent fasting can be healthful, but, in my experience, not when blood sugar balance is severely compromised. If you are not hungry for breakfast, it indicates that you may suffer slow digestion due to inadequate stomach acid. It’s a very stressful situation for the body and wreaks havoc on blood sugar balance for the rest of the day.
I usually eat eggs, sausage, and low-carb veggies for breakfast, leaving the carbs for lunch and dinner. Too much protein without healthy fats, for example, can deplete fat soluble vitamins A and D. Even plant-based protein powders provide poor quality protein without the fatty acid co-factors required to properly utilize the protein. I strongly believe gluten free diet is always the way to go, due to the genetic composition of modern wheat and the methods of wheat preparation. This is because the starches in grains damages the vili and microvilli in the small intestine, which are the finger-like projections responsible for absorbing nutrients. My Healthy Buttermints recipe here provides a dose of nourishing fatty acids to nip sugar cravings in the bud within 5-10 minutes of eating them. It contains butter and optionally coconut oil, two extremely healthful sources of beneficial saturated fats.
On the bright side,A improving your sleep habits will go a long way in supporting healthy blood sugar levels. In one study, sleep deprived participants experience a decrease of cortisol concentrations that was 6 times slower than usual.
For example, if you feel shaky or irritable in-between meals, this points to hypoglycemia (low blood sugar levels). This is a pretty affordable and easy option, and the only reoccurring expense is the test strips. This helps me stay on track with my blood sugar, although by now I know how to keep it pretty balanced. If your blood sugar is too high, increase the healthy fat at your meals and decrease the carbs (remember, fruits and roots are the best carbs!).
That came to 30 grams, according to my fitness tracking app, so if I had upped it to just over a cup of yogurt with 4 TBSP of flax and a half cup of almond milk, it probably would have been close to or at 40. I’m not sure where your getting your info from but in many cases powder can be the best source of protein.
The protein, due to processing, becomes denatured in most protein powders, plus it lacks the co-factors required for optimal absorption. Blood sugar is a simple sugar (glucose) that is broken down through digestion from the foods we eat and travels through our blood stream to our cells to provide energy to our bodies.
This isn’t about ruining your sugar party,  this is about setting you up for life long health. Too much glucose in the blood can have a serious impact on the body – including your feet!
Once associated with only the elderly this is now becoming common with children and young people and I personally believe it is completely preventable and can be managed through diet and lifestyle. Switch in your favourite fizzy drinks with flavour kombocha, cakes and chocolate with some homemade goodness from The Sweet Treat Collection. They are the foundational foods that I teach everyone in my Flourish Community about as not only do they help with blood sugar but also weight loss and general healing and resetting of the body.
Avoid sugar or even fruit salads for breakfast and only eat fruit if combined with fats and proteins like greek yoghurt.
While eating wholemeal pasta is better than its white alternative it’s not something you want as a staple in your diet.
Veg first then fat, then protein, then some healthy carbs like sweet potato if you can fit it in!
Intermittent fasting has been shown in some research to really help pre-diabetic bodies regain insulin sensitivity as well as a host of other benefits.
Find out more about it here as it can be a great option when more serious healing needs to take place.
The cells need glucose for energy, but for the cells to be able to use glucose they also need insulin which the pancreas emits in the response to glucose.
Being chronically dehydrated is hard on the blood, the carrier of not only the blood sugar but also insulin itself. If Americans are the biggest consumers in the world, muscles are the glucose consumer equivalent.

Refined sugar and corn syrup dramatically increase your blood sugar, forcing the pancreas to secrete large amounts of insulin. I teach and write about the current changes we are undergoing and how it affects us as energetic beings. The next course starts in July, 2009, but signing up now has the benefit of beginning to feel the wonderful energy that comes through this program. The good news, however, is that it can an be reversed through a healthy diet that balances your blood sugar. It is healthful for the body store of glycogen, but stress and hormone dysfunction deplete our ability to store glycogen and this can contribute to blood sugar imbalance. Stress and hormonal imbalances, however, reduce the body’s ability to store glycogen. Since the bile contains hormones and toxins that need to leave the body, stagnant bile allows these things to be reabsorbed into the body.
As a rule of thumb, enjoy fats that allowed your ancestors of 10,000 (and even 100,000 years ago!) to thrive.
Many nutrition researchers whom I greatly respect, including Sarah Ballentyne who wrote The Paleo Approach, believe it is best to transition to larger, less frequent meals to help regulate hunger hormones. And, of course, carbohydrates provide your body with the preferred source of fuel: glucose.
Consume a healthy source of protein, carbohydrate and fat at each meal to balance your blood sugar. One healthy protein addition that I recommend is Grassfed Collagen Hydrolysate, found here, which is gelatin that dissolves instantly in hot or cold beverages.
However, a gluten free diet does not automatically quality as a healthy diet, because it often includes extremely inflammatory ingredients like vegetable oils, soy, refined sugar and other grains.
As discussed in The Gut and Psychology Syndrome, this creates a permeable gut lining and fosters the overgrowth of pathogenic bacteria. Sweet potatoes, carrots, celeriac, beets and other root vegetables provide a nutrient-rich source of healthy carbs.A  Remember, to balance blood sugar, enjoy fruits and roots in the presence of healthy fats and protein. To learn which T-Tapp program to choose and how to use T-Tapp for optimal results, please read my T-Tapp Review and Guide here. I highly recommend this article by Chris Kresser explaining how and when to monitor your blood sugar with a glucose meter. You may find it helpful to monitor your blood sugar daily for a month while your are tweaking your diet.
If your blood sugar is too low between meals, consider increasing the carbs at your meals and perhaps include a snack such as the Healthy Buttermints.
In my research, I’ve come to the conclusion that chronic cardio are not helpful for relieving inflammation and hormone imbalances.
We live in a city where our water is fluoridated and would like to get a device that would remove it . One day while assisting a patient by taking off their socks I uncovered a black, stinky, nearly dead foot.
On a very basic level, this form of diabetes is when our cells no longer ‘answer the door’ when the hormone insulin comes a knocking, AKA becoming insulin resistant.
Most of our food converts into blood glucose but with some effort from the body but if you just drink a fizzy drink full of sugar, BOOM, your blood sugar is immediately elevated which is the thing we need to avoid. That is why all recipes here focus mainly on vegetables, fat protein and zero gluten to boot! It is particularly hard to get rid of by women in their menopause years.Belly fat can increase dramatically under acute and chronic high stress because of the hormone release of cortisol from the adrenals. The insulin tells the body to remove blood sugar fast (where it is stored as fat) which then causes a dramatic drop in blood sugar.
If your thyroid is not working properly, it can create a pancreatic imbalance which leads to insulin resistance in the body. Hypoglycemia can also occur after a high-carb, low-fat meal when excessive insulin pushes too much sugar into the cells. As a matter of fact, we do not have proof from studies to show that smaller, more frequent meals improves health. It can supplement your protein intake with healthful amino acids, but should not replace whole-food sources of animal proteins. Both these factors damage your blood sugar balance by instigating sugar cravings and inflammation.
I may be undiagnosed bipolar, so getting through the day in a good mood, calm and relaxed, without any blood sugar-, digestive-, or hormone-related issues, and feeling good about the way I look, is huge for me. Have you come across a reliable method or device that removes fluoride without altering drinking water significantly?
I nearly fell over but managed to  gather up my sense of professionalism and be all blaze, you know cos I hang out with people with black dead feet all the time!
This means glucose in the blood increases and this causes a whole lot of problems in the body. Exercise helps reduce stress levels as does massage, meditation, yoga, relaxing baths, etc.The recommended waist measurement for men is less than 40 inches and for women, less than 35 inches. Eventually the pancreas can’t create insulin (diabetes) or the body becomes insulin resistant (like the boy who called wolf, too many times). A meta-analysis in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition shows that there is no evidence that saturated fat causes heart disease. The small amount of refined honey in the recipe satisfies your sugar cravings but won’t spike your blood sugar, because it is balanced with fats.
There are sweeteners that can be used that don’t dramatically increase the blood glucose level. For an example of what a daily intake of fat should resemble, read my post 10 Reasons Why Low Fat is NOT High Nutrition.
Further, studies show that low cholesterol actually correlates to numerous health problems. Additionally, honey is shown to improve blood sugar balance in comparison to other sweeteners. As much as the quick fix is the desired option, to lose weight in reality we need to think about the long term.
