Many students confuse the Benedict's Test for Non-Reducing Sugars with the Benedict's Test for Reducing Sugars, perhaps because some of the steps in the procedure are similar.
A liquid food sample does not need prior preparation except dilution if viscous or concentrated. For a solid sample prepare a test solution by crushing the food and adding a moderate amount of distilled water. The test for non-reducing sugars is often conducted on a food sample which tested negative for reducing sugar. If reducing sugars have been shown to be present, a heavier precipitate is often observed when the test for non-reducing sugar is conducted. FreeStyle and related brand marks are trademarks of Abbott Group of Companies in various jurisdictions. I have been testing my blood glucose for over 23 years, which means I have pricked my fingers more than 50,000 times.
For the past several years I have been using the standard OneTouch device (pictured below) that came with my meter and BD Ultrafine II lancets. I have spent the last 2 months testing with the OneTouch Delica lancing device and lancets (pictured below).
Now I don’t listen to the good advice from the manufacturer and change the lancet every time I test-but you should. New Delica lancets definitely hurt less than new BD Ultrafine II lancets (and every other lancet I have used). The Delica has a 33-gauge needle compared to 30-gague in BD’s Ultrafine II (the larger the gauge, the smaller the needle). As non-reducing sugars do not have the aldehyde group, they cannot reduce copper (I) (blue) to the copper(II) (red).Sucrose is the most common disaccharide non-reducing sugar. Sodium hydrogen carbonate is necessary for neutrallization as the reduction of the copper(II) ions will not take place in acidic conditions - of excess acid is present. The blue copper(II) ions from copper(II) sulphate are reduced to red copper(I) ions by the aldehyde groups in the reducing sugars. Sodium carbonate provides the alkaline conditions which are required for the redox reaction above. Sodium citrate complexes with the copper (II) ions so that they do not deteriorate to copper(I) ions during storage. However it is less popular as it less sensitive and requires that the reagents - Fehling's solutions A and B - be kept separate until the experiment is carried out.

It can also be used with FreeStyle Optium blood ?-Ketone test strips to check blood ketone levels. With the BD Ultrafine that means about 3-4 weeks (or 150-200 tests).?I wouldn’t call my standard blood test comfortable, but it doesn’t bother me. The lancets only last me 3-5 tests before they will not get through the calluses on my fingers. If you are someone who changes their lancet about once a day, I highly recommend the OneTouch Delica. This accounts for the colour changes observed. The red copper(I) oxide formed is insoluble in water and is precipitated out of solution.
No use of any Abbott trademark, trade name, or trade dress in this site may be made without the prior written authorization of Abbott Laboratories, except to identify the product or services of the company. It is virtually pain free and has even allowed my fingers to start healing from years of abuse. This accounts for the precipitate formed. As the concentration of reducing sugar increases, the nearer the final colour is to brick-red and the greater the precipitate formed. FreeStyle blood glucose meters assist in the monitoring of blood glucose (and ketone) levels for people diagnosed with diabetes mellitus.
I don’t like changing my lancet once a day or more and it means I have to re-prick more often. The good part is after only a few months, I have noticed the callouses on the tips of my fingers start to diminish.
