Knowing what normal A1C levels for diabetics is a very important way to determine if you should be worry about your blood sugar test result. For those of you who are familiar with diabetes and the other factors related to diabetes, A1C level is the measurement of how good your body process blood sugar, or glucose, in your system, using its own insulin. As explained above, normal A1C levels for a diabetics differ from country to country, and also differ from people to people. Tuesday I was faced with the lovely task of chugging a bottle of orange-flavored sugar water {50 grams of dextrose aka sugar!} for the mandatory pregnancy glucose screening test. I had visions of nausea and light-headedness and general feelings of crappiness, but in reality, it wasn’t so bad. However, if I don’t pass…I’m not so sure I can handle the double strength version of the test. Around 26-28 weeks, every pregnant woman has to go through the not so pleasant task of downing a super sugary artificially flavored drink and then sitting around waiting for an hour to have blood drawn. Most of the time you don’t get any hint that you have gestational diabetes- most women do not experience any symptoms, other some experience increased thirst or urination, fatigue, blurred vision, or frequent infections. Gestational diabetes puts you at risk for possible birth complications, the most apparent being macrosomia- a fancy term for a big baby. They made me sit in a closet (where they weigh you) and drink it while the CNA stared me down.
Anyway, my doctor said I would go to the lab, drink the stuff, come up for my appointment, and then go back to the lab for the blood work to be drawn. I had my appointment in between- I think it was mostly luck that the midwife was ready then though! I think super sugary flat orange soda is the perfect description- and it being cold would be so much better! The reason I selected an hour after eating for postprandial measurements is that I had a Glucose Tolerance Test in 2008 and my blood glucose peaked 70 minutes after eating. All measurements were made with a pair of Accucheck Aviva glucometers and a Bayer Contour USB glucometer. What does the science say? Jenny Ruhl has guidance on this at her excellent web site Blood Sugar 101. My personal take on blood glucose targets and the selection of food to eat: my #1 goal is to never have to be on insulin. As a practical matter, I look at the results of the food tests in this web site and will, in the future, eat only those that have a minimal effect on my blood glucose. The New Atkins for a New You recommends that those trying to lose weight limit net carbs (total carbs minus fiber) to 20g during induction, then gradually add carbs in 5g increments as long as weight loss is not halted or other problems do not arise.
Got a Request?I’m a very busy guy with the site, but if you have a special request for an item that should be tested, let me know.
Diabetes is becoming an extremely common disease with almost one-thirds of the world’s population suffering from this problem. They also determine the level of sugar in your blood so that it becomes easy for the doctor to understand the extent of the disease you are currently suffering from and prescribe the medicines and the correct doses for you.
The most common test to check whether you are suffering from diabetes is the fasting blood glucose test. This is the reason why this test is generally done early in the morning and the patient is advised to eat his dinner early on the previous night. The oral glucose tolerance test is another simple test to determine whether a patient has diabetes or not.

This is one of the best tests to be sure that the patient is diabetic or not and can be done in any medical center or even in your doctor’s chamber. This kind of a test does not record the level of blood sugar in your body on the day the test is performed.
This kind of a test should be generally done every 6 months to keep a proper check of the disease and also determine if you are suffering from it in the first place.
If you want to know the number for normal A1C levels for diabetics, you have come to the right place. This glycated hemoglobin will exist for around 120 days, that is why usually A1C test is good for 3 months.
I was dreading it- I do not like super sugary things, and I do not like drinking things fast. If you fail, you’re subjected to an even more wonderful three hour version of the test, where you drink a double strength or double volume drink and then have your blood taken each hour for 3 hours.
Gestational diabetes is a form of diabetes that can occur during pregnancy, regardless of whether or not you had diabetes before hand.
Some people can keep it under control through diet and exercise, just like type 2 diabetes. It’s not uncommon for additional blood tests to be run with the same blood draw from your glucose test, specifically iron.
I had to have the ultrasound first though so the sugar didn’t make the baby go crazy. Please use newer version of your browser or visit Internet Explorer 6 countdown page for more information.
This is because of changes over the day in how insulin resistant by body is and in the amount of insulin I produce, lingering effects of previous meals, glucometer inaccuracies, and other factors.
It usually takes me about five minutes to eat, though I drank 75g of dextrose, the stimulus for my GTT, in under a minute. Both measurements for each test (one before and one after eating) were made with the same meter. I am very skeptical of these targets, which do not appear to fully consider the consequences of blood glucose levels this high or how lower targets can be reached with a very low carb diet. I am strongly motivated to avoid the need to inject myself with a drug that has to be carefully calibrated for the food I eat and the time I eat it. The table below shows colors associated with various average blood glucose increases measured an hour after eating.
Richard Bernstein recommends that diabetics eat no more than 6 grams at breakfast, 12g at lunch and 12g at dinner for a total of no more than 30g per day. Eric Westman has had clinical success with diabetes patients at Duke University with a diet of just 20g net carbs per day. If you doubt the fact that you are suffering from diabetes but are not sure of it, you can get certain tests done which determine the fact whether you have diabetes or not. You can get these tests done at any medical testing center and get the results in a few days. In this test, the patient is required to fast or not eat anything at all for a minimum of 12 to 14 hours before the test is done.
In this test, the patient does not need to do any type of fasting as the level of glucose in his blood is checked at any random time of the day.
The average blood sugar in your body in the last 2 to 3 months is measured to check whether the level of blood glucose has stayed within recommended limits or exceeded it. The patient does not need to fast for this kind of a test or make any preparations beforehand.

If there is a lack of insulin, or your body does not react well to insulin in such a way that its effectiveness in lowering the blood sugar is compromised, then your blood sugar level will remain high.
So we have to take all these information with a grain of salt simply because these numbers are only indication. However, whatever your A1C level is, you must know how it works in order for you to understand what you need to do to handle it properly. After that your body will start to regenerate the red blood cells and the new blood cells will have a different A1C measurement since it will have a different level of glycated hemoglobin in it. Everybody is tested because it doesn’t really matter what your risk factors are- you can still get it. A baby born to a mother with gestational diabetes also faces the risk of hypoglycemia- low blood sugar- right after birth, because the baby immediately loses the large supply of glucose from the  mother.  While gestational diabetes goes away after giving birth, having gestational diabetes also means you’re at a greater risk of developing type 2 diabetes down the road, so consider it a flashing warning sign.
Pregnancy literally robs your body of iron- and it’s super important to keep those levels up.
The worst part was having that much liquid in my stomach (for normal people it’s no big deal- maybe 8 or 10 oz?). He recommends subtracting half of the fiber from the total carb count to estimate effective carbs. Only water can be consumed in these 12 hours of fasting, all other types of beverages should be strictly avoided.
After the patient consumes the drink, his blood sample is taken at regular intervals in the next two hours and it is checked for the level of glucose that it contains. It has to be reviewed together with your lifestyle and habits and consulted with your doctor and dietician. So for instance if you have a 6.0 A1C test result, this test result will be good for about 3 months. Either way, you’ll probably be monitoring your blood sugar with finger pricks to keep an eye on things. I was really, really not looking forward to it because I hate sweet things too- the idea of a regular soda makes me gag.
At some point, I may get a continuous blood glucose meter to measure my total glucose response, but this is definitely a limitation of my current tests.
Also, some of these food products are rarely eaten with no other, the way I tested them; sandwich bread might be eaten with peanut butter and sugar-free pickles, rather than carb-free cheese,  and a salad.
If a person does not have diabetes, his blood glucose level will remain constant during the day, no matter what he has eaten or when he has eaten his last meal. The reason is because some people who also have problems with their cholesterol and blood pressure, will be at risk for other problems when their A1C test shows a high number. That is why it is quite common for doctors to suggest A1C test to be done at least twice a year, and more frequently if deemed necessary.
I do a lot of tests of each product and compute the average and standard deviation of the results. While being obese and unhealthy certainly increase your chances, it’s not unheard of for a perfectly fit and healthy woman to become diabetic during pregnancy.
Luckily the doctors office called me the next day and told me my levels were completely normal… NO three hour test for me! The hormones produced by the placenta cause insulin resistance, meaning it can’t work as well.
