The glycemic index—or GI—is a measure of how high and for how long a food raises your blood glucose or blood sugar level. Headaches are one of the most common problems humans experience, as common as low back pain. The common headache is just that, a pain in the head which is usually a pressure, dull ache or diffuse pain.


If these do not resolve the common headache there is more behind it than just simple daily stress. Tension headache symptoms begin at the back of the head and neck causing pressure and pain in the back of the head and then either move up over the top of the head or around the sides into the temples on one or both sides of the head. Migraine is not the same as recurring or chronic headache, no matter how frequent or severe. Will 2016 be the year foods like quinoa and kale move from lead actors in the healthy eating scene to more supporting roles? Move over, quinoa, and make room for other ancient grains such as freekeh, kamut, amaranth, millet (it’s not just for birds) and Ethiopian teff grass. Amaranth is high in protein, zinc and calcium and can be added to soups or stews, or eaten as a breakfast cereal, hot or cold. Millet, the small seeds from grasses and originally a crop in China thousands of years ago, is full of nutrients. Ethiopian teff grass is a sweet, nutty grain for baked goods that’s high in calcium, iron, fiber and protein. Recipes using any of these grains – and others – are plentiful online and have cookbooks dedicated to them. While juicing is more than likely here to stay, soup can be a true meal and often more nutritious than juices, including those made with vegetables. Besides the nutritional benefits, eating soup instead of swigging a smoothie, something often done on the run, is a much more mindful way to eat. In the same vein, smoothie bowls, already a trend on the east and west coasts and likely heading inward as trends do, are a more mindful way to satisfy nutritional needs.
A smoothie bowl, a layering of the foods that would be blended together as a smoothie, must be enjoyed with a spoon, sitting, thinking, talking – whatever the case may be while eating – rather than drinking on the run.
The food scene is always changing and health food trends may come and go, but one thing is certain: Nutritious, natural foods – whether trendy or not – are the way to go when the goal of eating is to stay healthy, maintain energy and prevent disease. It is not reasonable to say that a person who occasionally eats fast food or who eats fast food that is relatively healthy is at an increased danger of developing type 2 diabetes.

My doctor told me how much sugar was in those sodas, so I also switched to sugar-free versions or water. Managing these common headaches is fairly simple by reducing stress, eating better, drinking water and simple over the counter aspirin or acetaminophen.
An aura consists of symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, photophobia (extreme sensitivity to light), tinnitus (ringing or sounds in the ears), sensitivity to odors, or worsened by simple exertion (such as getting up out of a chair or turning your head). To be smart about your eating habits, avoid eating foods with a high GI if you are simply going to sit on your sofa. These auras can include one, a combination of, or all of the above and can occur before or after the onset of the migraine. They’ll end up stored as fat, make you gain weight, and you’ll feel tired as soon as your blood glucose level drops.
If I eat fast food at all, I substitute a small salad for the fries and drink water or unsweet iced tea. Use high GI foods sparingly, unless you need quick emergency blood glucose replacement to keep going or to keep your energy level from crashing. Red wine, low blood sugar from skipping meals, odors (especially perfumes), flashing or very bright lights, weather changes, lack of sleep, hormone changes, stress, and certain foods such as caffeine have all been identified as triggers for migraine. It is the reproducibility of the pain, triggers, and the presence of auras that differentiate migraine from tension or chronic headache.
