This issue of endothelial cell health and function is as important to athletes as it is to the general public.
When the 1998 Nobel Prize in Medicine was awarded to 3 American research for their discovery on how the endothelium converts the semi-essential amino acid L-arginine into nitric oxide – as a signaling molecule, there was an explosion of research in this area. That missing ingredient was and is the fact that every time your blood pulses across the endothelium it creates a sheering force that stimulates the endothelium to release a puff of nitric oxide into the blood stream. As the image shows below, your endothelium loses its ability to properly product nitric oxide as you age. In your 20’s your arteries are generally healthy and clear of obvious disease, though research shows the disease and aging process has already begun.
In your 30’s and 40’s, accumulation of fatty deposits called plaque typically begins to accelerate in men, women are generally protected in their major arteries until after menopause though disease may begin in smaller vessels. In your 50’s, the assault on your endothelium continues while the vessel wall becomes stiffer and more fibrous. In your 60’s and beyond, the aging process contributes to the attack on the lining of the arteries.
However, resent research in human study groups are showing that when properly nourished the endothelium can produce higher levels of nitric oxide.

We spoke to sleep expert Chireal Shallow of the Henry Potter Advisory Committee to get her advise on why we're losing sleep, and how to can make sure we get the rest we need every night. Production of insulin – a pancreatic hormone that usually deals with balancing blood sugar levels – is either reduced or the cells don’t respond to it properly. As you lose more fluids, the body will try to replenish them, hence the constant need to drink. Dry mouth can become a breeding ground for bacteria and cause different oral and dental problems. So can we safely indulge our sweet tooth over the Christmas period?Dr Mark Vanderpump, an endocrinologist at the Royal Free Hampstead NHS Trust in London, says that while most healthy people can get away with the odd sugar binge, there is 'quite a large population in this country who are on the borderline of diabetes, and if they put enough pressure on the system, it may just tip them over the edge'. All of these symptoms are made worse by the fact that slow healing is also a sign of diabetes and infections are common. Here, the body becomes resistant to insulin or, in the case of type 1 diabetes, it doesn't produce any insulin at all.
Diabetes foot swelling, nerve damage, and other problems can lead to a greatly decreased quality of life, and the key to heading off the worst effects is appropriate glucose control. In addition, when blood sugar levels come back down you experience the inevitable “sugar crash” which can sometimes cause hunger pangs, sluggishness, and irritability.
