Before you start packing, check your airline's carry-on luggage limitations to prevent hefty checked-baggage fees.
Traveling carry-on only might seem restrictive and difficult to do, but I believe NOT checking luggage provides me with more freedom.
Also, if your flight happens to be on a smaller plane, like a prop jet, the overhead compartments are much smaller as well, so you won’t be able to bring as much.
There is often a weight restriction on carry-on luggage too, so check with your airline for that as well. If you are flying with an airline that allows a carry-on bag plus a personal item, try to put small but heavier things in your personal item because they usually don’t weigh the personal item.
If your bag is at the high end of the size limit, try to board as early in the boarding process as you can to make sure you have room for your bag. Stay tuned for more in my How to Travel Carry-On Only series, and I’ll show you how to skip checking luggage and travel lighter. My younger daughter and I are heading to Chicago tomorrow for 4 nights and for the first time ever we are going to try and travel with just a carry-on suitcase. Over the years I’ve come to travel carry on only for all trips shorter than two weeks long.
Just because there are published rules does not mean the folks at checkin will abide by them.
Wow, I’ve never had an airline employee make me check a bag that was clearly within the carry-on limits!
Packing only into carry-on also forces you to leave the unnecessary things at home, which makes travelling that much lighter and easier.
May 11, 2013 by Editor Leave a Comment In my previous post, I discussed the four most important things to pack in your carry on bag. This one should be self-explanatory, but sharp objects are prohibited in carry-on luggage because they could be used as a weapon.
Baseball bats, ski poles, pool cues, bows and arrows, hockey sticks, golf clubs, and pretty much any other sporting equipment containing the words stick, pole, bat or club cannot be brought on the plane as carry-on.
Obviously a gun is a weapon, and they don’t want you bringing it on an airplane in your carry-on bag.
When traveling internationally, most countries prohibit you from bringing in meats, fruit, vegetables, plants, and other agricultural products.
I know airline food is notoriously bad, or often not even offered, so it makes sense to bring your own occasionally.
Ok, bring the nail polish (in your liquids bag) if you want, but please don’t paint your nails in flight. Your neighbor does not want to look over and see you reading an adult magazine or watching adult movies on your laptop. We’re all glad you care about how you smell, but perfume can be unpleasant and bothersome to many people.
Guidebooks can be really helpful, but chances are you don’t need to bring that heavy book with you on the trip. This is a very good article that is quite comprehensive in listing the ins and outs of what not to pack on your carry on.
3- Most, if not all, airlines will let you take your walking stick on the plane as long as it’s not pointy.
The reason why I asked them is that I have a Nanna who lives in Perth, Western Australia, on the other side of the country to me, the city in which I was born. Knowing my circumstances I think it may be wise for me to call up all the airlines I may be flying with in advance and them questions similar to what I’ve just asked you so I have a plan in my head at all times as to what to do and how to do it. I like the size of a carry on bag because it is easy to travel around with, but more and more I am checking it. It is getting harder and harder to go carry-on only, and I totally agree with you about the 1 bag, no personal item rule. It still surprises me that Ryanair allows one carry-on bag plus a personal item when so many other airlines don’t. Also, wearing the flip-flops obviates the need to remove them for the airside security screening.
I agree, hopefully people wouldn’t think to bring a gun or porn on an airplane, but it happens. This is our first time flying (family of 5) We have no electronics to keep children entertained.
Let's See Your Pic's - How You Carry Concealed. This is a discussion on Let's See Your Pic's - How You Carry Concealed. Thanks for all the great replies, I'm thinking that I've just been to to worried about the whole neon sign thing to think about normal street clothes.
Also, and about those pictures of your wife, would she care to model any more for the sake of this thread? If any slim-line lady here is worried about concealment - well, they better dial in to those pics.! I'll soon be switching my primary carry to a Glock 19 in a Brommeland Def Con OWB holster - just picked it up yesterday and it was a sweetheart at the range (pics coming Monday).
Going to OWB carry I've bought several size large shirts just to add a little length to the cover shirt.
Be wary of third-party sites that aggregate information for multiple airlines as their measurements may be inaccurate or outdated.
The most commonly allowed size for carry on luggage is 45 linear inches (length + width + height). Airlines that give measurements by dimension typically allow bags up to 22 x 14 x 9 inches. In addition to your carry on luggage, most airlines also allow one personal item, like a purse or laptop bag. The rules for carry-on-sized toiletries in the United States are set by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA). Before flying, always check your airline’s carry on luggage size and weight guidelines.
A good rule of thumb is that your carry on luggage can be up to 45 linear inches (length + width + height).

After a backpacking trip to Europe in 2009, we found that both suitcases and hiking packs were unideal for world travel.
After fielding countless packing and travel questions, we started this blog to share the answers.
Perfect Your PackingGet a free carry on packing list and weekly packing tips sent straight to your inbox. You'll also be able to pack your things more efficiently if you know the specific size limits. It was my first trip completely on my own, and I thought that if I only brought carry-on luggage, it would be one less thing to worry about. A simple and inexpensive luggage scale can help you avoid surprises at check-in if your bag is over the limit.
Bulkhead seats, the ones that don’t have another row of seats directly in front of them, are usually great for extra leg room, but your carry-on bag and personal item must both go in the overhead compartment. It might take a little discipline, but the freedom you will get in exchange will be well worth it. If you stay in the US, this is easy, but start spending more time flying around Europe and Asia and the bag you were planning to carry on may hve to go under.
It mostly happens to me when they have a low weight limit for carry-on bags and mine is over the limit.
I always try to use just carry-on when I fly, not paying baggage fees means I can use that money to do something I really want. It’s hard to avoid checking 100% of the time, but attempting it gets me a really high success rate. I usually carry a padlock in case I need to lock my bag up in a hostel, and I realized one time just how heavy that thing is, but it doesn’t take up much room.

If you simply must bring a knife, box cutter or sword on your trip, it must be packed in your checked luggage. If playing sports will be part of your travels, consider renting equipment at your destination. Most guns are permitted in checked luggage as long as they are empty, and they must be in a locked, hard-sided container. If you’re planning on bringing your tools with you, you will most likely need to put them in checked luggage.
But please be respectful of your neighbors and leave the fish and other stinky food at home. Either rip out the pages you think you’ll need, photocopy them, or take pictures with your phone of the pages you need. Regulations change often, so please check the TSA (or other countries) and the airline websites before you fly. I always keep sharp objects like nail clipper in checked-in luggage since I haven’t been traveled with carry-on only.
One is; is there a website or luggage supplier out there who offers an all in one solution for carry on luggage or better still, luggage period, that is fully TSA compliant? When it comes to walking sticks, of which I own and use one whenever I am outside my own home, can you take them on the plane with you and are they considered carry on luggage or just as what it is – a walking stick and do you have to stow them away in the locker room above your head when you’re on the plane? I’ll try to answer your questions briefly, but I do have posts in the works that address some of these issues, so hopefully there will be more detail on the site about these issues in the future.
When it comes to travel I always have her in the back of my mind because she recently turned 87 and had a cancer scare earlier this year that fortunately turned out to be nothing in the end. You can find a lot of info on the airline’s website, but finding their customer service number and calling to ask some questions is a good way to make sure you know how to handle everything.
It doesn’t reduce the amount of stuff in the overhead, it just means you have nothing on the floor. If you buy a regional guidebook, you can cut each country chapter into its own pamphlet, and it’ll probably fit into a back pocket. Wearing heavier shoes, and even putting any small but heavy items in your pockets will reduce the weight of your carry-on bag when you’re at the check-in counter. TSA does catch people every once in a while who say they forgot they had a gun in their bag. You can bring a fanny pack on board with you, but it will probably count as your personal item, like a purse. I just need to buy shirts that are a bit longer, so that I can wear them untucked, and have my gun at my rear side. The mediums will work fine for normal situations but for reaching top shelves at the store I wanted the extra coverage.
Read the rest of the series to learn the principles for packing light and to find our Definitive Carry On Packing List. Some airlines allow bags that are larger in one or more dimensions, but this configuration will meet the guidelines for most major airlines. A $20 electronic luggage scale will pay for itself by helping you avoid fees for overweight luggage. Once approved, you’ll have access to an expedited screening process including a separate security line. The most common configuration is 22 x 14 x 9 inches, the dimensions of the Tortuga Travel Backpack. It turned into my preferred way to travel, and now I do whatever I can to avoid checking luggage.
If your bag measures an inch or two over on one side but is smaller on another side, it should be fine. I have had to gate check the occasional bag on flights where I didn’t realize the overhead was too small for my bag. If you have a flight on one of the regional airlines, they usually use prop jets which are smaller and have smaller overhead bins.
I checked ahead of time and knew to switch to a duffel bag so that I could actually bring enough clothing.

Your bag needs to be small enough to meet airline carry on size requirements, but large enough to carry an extra set of clothes, your books and entertainment, snacks and a water bottle. Backpacks worn with both shoulder straps can be more comfortable for a heavy load or walking long distances, while also freeing up both hands to carry your boarding pass and id.
Scissors that are less than 4 inches long, like nail scissors, are generally allowed by TSA, but since the final decision rests with the agent, just be aware that they could confiscate it. If you feel you must have fireworks, bleach or paint thinner on your vacation, buy them when you arrive. Otherwise it will be confiscated on arrival, and you could find yourself facing an angry border agent. Wait until you reach your destination to spray on the perfume, that way your seatmates can breathe easy during the flight. According to the TSA website, scissors shorter than 4 inches are allowed, but in some countries scissors aren’t allowed at all. It seems as though to me that the United States has the harshest restrictions by and large and that if you comply with what the TSA requires plus what is required for you origin, transit and destination countries, you can’t really go wrong from a luggage compliance standpoint. The other problem is if you end up on a regional jet, they have smaller overhead storage, so the size of the luggage you bring would have to be even smaller.
If you need hiking boots and other gear like that for outdoorsy stuff, you might not be able to fit it all in a carry-on. They will probably want you to store it in the overhead since it won’t really fit in the seat in front of you, and they want to keep the aisles and the space where your feet sit clear.
So I asked those questions just in case she falls really ill or the worst possible thing happens and I get the call that everybody dreads and need to quickly hop on a plane to Perth. Or do you even use travelers check’s still and a bit of foreign currency buying before you leave for a destination. Anymore you can only have the one bag and even your purse must fit inside, which is just ridiculous! I hope other airlines do follow this, but I typically see airlines going the other direction with carry-on allowance unfortunately. And I’ve known a couple people who have looked over at their airplane neighbor to see them looking at porn on their laptop or a magazine. I often bring snacks like granola bars, something that won’t spoil, smell bad or get squished too easily. So you could have your carry-on size suitcase plus the fanny pack, but if you have a larger purse or something of similar size that you can fit the fanny pack into, that would work.
After all, we didn’t have loads of gadgets when we were kids, and we kept ourselves entertained just fine! You should also be able to print your boarding passes, but if you don’t have a printer, you can print them at the airport. We used these measurements to maximize packing space in the Tortuga Travel Backpack while still keeping it carry-on-eligible on most airlines.
In the PreCheck security line, you can leave your laptop and liquids in your bag and don’t have to take off your jacket or shoes. Just be aware that some low cost airlines only allow one carry-on item, so any smaller items like a purse would have to fit inside of your bigger bag. The funny thing is I’m such a hotly girl that no one believes I travel carry on only. Its not often but it happens to me on maybe 1 in every 15 to 20 flights, most recently on a United flight from Amsterdam to DC, but I have had this on Singapore Air, Air New Zealand, and Qatar.
I have a hard suitcase, and a backpack would probably be easier to fit into those smaller overhead compartments.
It also needs to be made of durable material to put up with being shoved under seats, crammed into overhead bins, and sent down a conveyor belt through security. If you were thinking of bringing any of these, you’ll either need to leave it at home, find an alternative, or deal with checking luggage. Rules in other countries can be different from those in the US, so check it out before you fly from somewhere else. Oddly enough, the TSA website states that it’s ok to bring ice skates in your carry-on. These and other flammable and explosive items are prohibited in both carry-on and checked luggage. Certain countries, like Australia and New Zealand, are even more strict and won’t allow things like wooden souvenirs you may have picked up somewhere else.
Be realistic about what you need to take on your vacation, buy restricted items you need once you arrive, and enjoy your trip! Though usually in those cases they will gate check your bag and give it back to you as you get off the plane, still able to avoid baggage claim. Stuff like that would be really helpful for an analytical guy like me who always wants to know how to do stuff before actually doing it. I gave them away when I left the countries, and it was a fun Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants type of thing. Global Entry offers all of the benefits of PreCheck plus expedited re-entry into the United States for $100 for 5 years. If my first flight arrives late and I have to run between terminals to catch my connection, a backpack is easier to hold on to and keep my personal belongings together. Buy travel sized containers and fill them with shampoo, shower gel, and any other products you want to bring on your trip.
As for TSA compliant, they don’t really look at the size of your carry-on (as long as it fits through the x-ray machine) but for checked luggage, if you want to lock your luggage, you have to get TSA locks so if they feel the need to open your bag, they can. Different states throughout the US have different laws, and many other countries heavily restrict or prohibit personal gun use and ownership. Each airline has a different weight restriction on carry-on luggage, and some are really low. If the limit is 5 or 7 kg, it might be too difficult for you to reduce your stuff down to just that small weight. TSA does allow one book of safety matches in your carry-on, but matches are not allowed in your checked luggage. Normal lighters are allowed in your carry-on, and can only be checked if they have no fuel in them.
