September 29th, 2010 - A last-minute opportunity to appear in November's Delta Sky Magazine was presented to us. Coincidentally, The New York Times broke a story this week about how much money airlines have been raking in from baggage fees, stating, "from January to March, United States airlines collected $769 million in baggage fees." It sounded like a perfect storm of traveler angst was brewing, and our clothing was the solution. October 1, 2010 - We received word that Delta Sky rejected this ad (click here to see it or scroll down to see it on the last page) based on the content. It turns out that they didn't like the other message on the page, "SCOTTEVEST Travel Clothing Has Specialized Pockets to Help You Stay Organized & Avoid Extra Baggage Fees" - particularly the "Avoid Extra Baggage Fees." As evidenced by the recent New York Times analysis of the airline industry, those baggage fees are what keeps them going. When I was told that they rejected our compromise headline as well, I responded as follows in an email, "Frankly, if they object to the 'avoid the baggage fees' line, they need to stop charging baggage fees. Being very connected to social media, and thinking that the situation was ludicrous, I immediately posted my disbelief in a video on (YouTube and Twitter, but honestly did not expect anything more to come of it. Soon thereafter I was in the middle of a flurry of phone calls - my advisers, reporters and media agent were all trying to get a hold of me.
The bottom line: it became abundantly clear that the airlines would never allow me to advertise a product that costs them money and makes me money. To summarize, yes my SCOTTEVEST Travel Clothing helps people avoid extra baggage fees, and look great while doing it. United put its new carry-on baggage sizing policy into effect yesterday, so we asked TPG Contributor Jason Steele, a Denver-based United flyer, for his take on the policy and its enforcement. If you’ve flown on United Airlines recently, you might have noticed that they have deployed new carry-on baggage sizers at all of their gates, and even at many of the check-in areas. Maximum dimensions for a carry-on bag are 9 inches x 14 inches x 22 inches (22 cm x 35 cm x 56 cm), including handles and wheels. Maximum dimensions for your personal item, such as a shoulder bag, backpack, laptop bag or other small item, are 9 inches x 10 inches x 17 inches (22 cm x 25 cm x 43 cm). However, those who have measured the new sizers find that their interior dimensions are one inch larger than advertised. All passengers may be required to place both their carry-on and personal item into one of the new sizers before boarding. United will collect checked baggage fees from passengers whose bags do not fit in the sizers. At the same time, the reason that people aggressively push the boundaries of the current policy is that United charges (non-elites and those without one of their co-branded credit cards) for checked bags at the check-in counter. Furthermore, these new limits are significantly less than that what will fit in an overhead bin. Having each passenger place his or her bags in a sizer, and potentially have to see an agent to pay a checked-bag fee, will undoubtedly slow down the boarding process even more. Limiting bags to linear dimensions of 45 inches with a maximum single dimension of 22” is not the same as limits of 22 x 14 x 9 inches. It is unclear whether or not United and their contracted gate agents will require the bag to merely fit in the new sizers or to easily slide in and out. Unfortunately, many will discover that their expensive carry-on or personal item needs to be replaced in order to comply with United’s new rules.
The bottom line is, the new policy is in effect, and it’s better to be prepared than get blindsided by having to pay a fee to check your bag at the gate. Jao added that despite attempts by the US Department of Transportation to provide more transparency in advertised airfares earlier this year, travellers still cannot easily search and compare airline fees. Referring to fees that travellers have to pay, the site mentioned that travellers need to know potential cost differences in booking and changing tickets online, over the phone, or at the airport. At the time of the launch of the CAA’s tool, Transport Secretary Justine Greening acknowledged that many air tickets seem to come with unexpected charges for everything from choosing a seat to just ‘booking’ the ticket. The CAA has also worked to ensure all airlines operating in the UK now comply with their obligation to display clearly all unavoidable fees, taxes and charges upfront in their booking processes. There are airlines, especially ones belonging to the low-cost category, that are quite competent in making consumers understand the significance of why certain charges make sense or are useful enough for them.
For instance, AirAsia Group isn’t averse to charging its customers for new services, but it ensures that there is some novelty factor associated with its offering. It seems the airline knows how to ensure that travellers pay for services that normally haven’t been charged for in the past. In December last year, AirAsia chose to abolish the counter check-in fees for all international flights throughout its route network. The Business Travel Coalition (BTC) believes that the federal government can uniquely solve this problem for airlines unable to act independently and for consumers being financially harmed. PwC, in its recent study, found that 65 percent of leisure travellers value all inclusive over a la carte options.  Ancillary fees may bring in revenue but can also drive-out customers.

Expect no exceptions for elite level travelers and those traveling in business or first class. Those with plans to travel on United should take out their tape measures and ensure that their bags comply with this new policy.
If you look closely at the baggage sizers, you will see that there are cutouts on either end of the 22-inch length for handles to protrude (but not wheels).
Even when the dimensions of your bag appear to be compliant with the new policy, there is no accounting for the whim of gate agents under pressure to enforce this new policy who might find that your bag doesn’t fit easily enough, or that its handle is too large. United’s Contract of Carriage is filled with exceptions to the carry-on plus personal item rule. United offers its Explorer and United Club cards that offer up to two free checked bags when you use them to purchase your tickets. If you don’t want to worry about being forced to check your favorite carry-on bag, you might just want to fly a different airline. I have long preferred soft side carry ones because they tend to be more affordable and because I could overstuff them a little. Many bags list a height of just 20 inches, but that often doesn’t account for handles. Bring your tape measure with you to shop for luggage, and double check any bag you order through the mail. One of the areas that is being addressed by such tools pertains to letting consumers understand and compare additional charges being levied by air carriers. The tool is launching with more than 300 airline fees from all major US airlines, initially focusing on helping travellers with domestic air travel. It offers travellers an easy way to obtain general airline information about checked baggage allowances (quantity, weight, and size of checked bags allowed for free by a specific airline).

These entities urged Congress to direct the US Department of Transportation (DOT) to within 180 days require airlines to disclose optional fee information in the same electronic and transactable formats used to publish airfares themselves. The Aeronaut has accompanied me to Machu Picchu (twice), been thrown into many a crowded colectivo, bus, and train, sat beside me in restaurants while I ate, and even served as my pillow on a bench in the Lima airport and on the floor of the Miami airport. Therefore, it would be wise to include a small cloth backpack or bag with your valuables, just in case you are forced to check your bag at the gate. These include an overcoat or wrap, an umbrella, a reasonable amount of reading material, a camera, and a diaper bag. At this time, most other carriers have little incentive to separate you from your carry-on, so long as it fits in the overhead bin. I find some good deals at discount retailers in my area such as Ross, TJ Maxx, and Tuesday Morning.
Many travelers have found that their bags dimensions are inaccurate, or don’t include wheels and handles. Accordingly, the Authority introduced its tool and published a summary of the optional charges levied by the top airlines in the UK in one, easy-to-use price comparison document. AirAsia X says it is the first airline in Asia Pacific to offer its guests travelling in Economy, an option which provides a chance to get all three seats in a row for a nominal fee. The Empty Seat option is an added service to our ancillary product offerings which adds extra value to our service offerings.
Prior to this, AirAsia also reduced the processing fee for the usage of charge cards during flight booking from RM8 per guest per sector to only RM5 per guest per sector.
After researching and testing different bags (including the Eagle Creek Adventure Weekender, a review of which I’ll post next), the one I decided to bring to South America is the Tom Bihn Aeronaut. In fact, the Aeronaut has been my most constant and reliable companion during my time in South America. When the Aeronaut is fully packed, because of its size, it becomes very clunky and uncomfortable to carry as a duffel. Other than that, the Aeronaut fits snugly into every airline box carry-on size checker I’ve come across. A simple, small strap connecting the top of the backpack strap to the top of the bag itself would solve this problem. From its YKK zippers, to its 1050 denier fabric, this bag screams high-quality in every tiny detail.
Of course, an odd shaped bag could fit this total and still not fit in the overhead bin so try to stay with some of the more traditional bags.

It was communicated to us that we would likely be rejected by all other airline magazines as well, and that this was causing major ripples. Some travelers have received email announcements while others have noticed additional information when checking in online.
Over the weekend, as this new policy was supposed to take effect, some travelers reported strict enforcement, while others saw none. On a practical level, one could easily have a bag of 20 x 14 x 10 inches that meets the specification of Contract of Carriage, but fails to fit in the new sizers. Nevertheless, your bag will obviously fail the sizer test if it violates the 9-inch dimension, which is 10 inches on the actual sizers.
As long as they are enforcing their rules (and then some), passengers should be aware of all the permissible exceptions. For example, I picked up a hard-sided piece from a company called CIAO that is compliant with United’s new policy and international carriers for $40.
Information on the cost of taking hold luggage on board, having an in-flight meal and reserving specific seats was included, along with a range of other optional charges that airlines may apply. Travellers who want to find the cheapest fees can compare across all airlines by selecting personal travel preferences (i.e. We offer them the option to purchase only what is required depending on individual needs rather than bundling the cost to our fare offerings.
